Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsTo return a Playwright screenshot from an Express API, generate it with page.screenshot(), set the response Content-Type to match the image format, then send the returned Buffer with res.send(). For a PNG, use res.type('png').send(image). The example below assumes your application has already created a Playwright page.
Return a screenshot Buffer from an Express route
Playwright’s page.screenshot() returns image bytes when you do not provide a file path. Express can send those bytes directly. Explicitly set the MIME type: Express otherwise labels a Buffer response as application/octet-stream, not as an image.
app.get('/screenshot', async (req, res, next) => {
try {
const image = await page.screenshot({ type: 'png' });
res.type('png').send(image);
} catch (error) {
next(error);
}
});
This is a documentation-based route pattern, not a tested application. It assumes app is your Express application and page is an existing Playwright Page. Adapt the setup and cleanup of the browser and page to your application’s lifecycle. Playwright’s screenshot options are documented in its Page API; Express documents response methods.
Make the route target explicit
The example captures the page that page currently represents; it does not navigate to a URL. If the route should capture a requested URL, validate and constrain that URL before navigating. Accepting arbitrary destinations without controls can let callers make your server access unintended network locations. The supplied documentation does not prescribe an application-specific URL policy.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Match the response type to the screenshot
For PNG, res.type('png') sets the response to image/png. If you configure another screenshot encoding, set the corresponding content type instead. Keep the Playwright format and Express response type in sync so clients can interpret the bytes correctly.
Choose between an in-memory response and a saved file
| Approach | How it works | When it fits | Design considerations |
|---|---|---|---|
| Send the Buffer | Call page.screenshot() without path, then send the returned bytes with res.send(). |
Use when the API needs to return the screenshot immediately and does not need a server-side file. | Set the correct Content-Type. This avoids creating a file just to transfer it. |
| Save, then send the file | Pass a path option to page.screenshot(), then transfer the file with res.sendFile(). |
Use when the application needs a persistent artifact or a file-oriented workflow. | Construct paths securely, constrain access, and account for cleanup and concurrent requests. Express documents the root option for constraining relative paths. |
For a file-based route, use a server-controlled destination rather than a path supplied directly by a caller. For example, generate a unique filename in an application-managed directory, save the screenshot there, and pass a safely constructed path to res.sendFile(). The response still needs a Content-Type appropriate to the file. A saved-file flow is not inherently required by Playwright; it is an application design choice.

Express documents res.sendFile(), including its root option and path handling. Choose file retention and deletion behavior as part of your application’s design.
Complete the response and handle failures
An Express route must send or end its response. If a screenshot operation rejects, passing the error to next(error) lets Express error handling take over, as in the example. If an error occurs after response headers have already been sent, the normal error response may no longer be possible; handle that case according to Express’s error-handling guidance.

- Do not start sending an image response until the screenshot bytes are available.
- Do not attempt to send a second response if the first one has already begun.
- Decide in your application where browser and page instances are created, reused, and closed. The appropriate lifecycle depends on the application; one model is not established as universally correct.
See the Express documentation for routing and response completion and error handling.
Common problems and fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| The client downloads an opaque file or does not display an image | The response is a Buffer without an explicit image Content-Type, or the type does not match the encoded image. | Set res.type('png') for a PNG, or use the matching type for the format you generate. |
| The request stays open | The route neither sent nor ended the response, or screenshot generation has not completed. | Ensure the success path sends the Buffer and the failure path reaches Express error handling. |
| The route fails while capturing | The screenshot operation rejected, or the page is not available in the route’s scope or lifecycle. | Check that a valid page is supplied and inspect the application’s error handling. The route example assumes page setup has happened elsewhere. |
| A file response can access an unintended path | A caller-controlled or insufficiently constrained path was passed to file-transfer logic. | Use server-generated paths or constrain relative paths with the documented root option. |
| The error handler cannot send an error response | Response headers may already have been sent. | Follow Express’s guidance for errors after writing to the response; avoid trying to send a second response. |
Or skip the browser setup
If you need a screenshot endpoint without managing a Playwright browser and page, ScreenshotNeo returns a screenshot from one GET request. Its cookie/consent handling accepts banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and the response identifies the page verdict and billing status in headers. It also provides an MCP server for AI agents, with tools including take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf.
