For a typical 1080p slideshow on YouTube Live, use the recommendation for your encoder’s codec and frame rate: H.264 at 30 fps is 14 Mbps, H.264 at 60 fps is 17 Mbps, AV1 or H.265 at 30 fps is 10 Mbps, and AV1 or H.265 at 60 fps is 12 Mbps. These are YouTube’s general ingestion recommendations, not slideshow-specific targets. Choose a rate your upload connection can sustain, leave YouTube’s recommended 20% bandwidth headroom, and test the complete stream—including transitions and any audio—before going live.

Choose bitrate by codec, resolution, and frame rate

YouTube’s published encoder guidance lists minimum and recommended ingestion bitrates. Select the row matching the codec, resolution, and frame rate your encoder will send. The figures below are Mbps; they are YouTube recommendations, not guarantees of picture quality or special settings for slideshows.

Resolution and frame rate AV1 or H.265 minimum AV1 or H.265 recommended H.264 minimum H.264 recommended
2160p (4K) at 60 fps 10 35 14 50
2160p (4K) at 30 fps 8 30 11 42
1440p at 60 fps 6 24 8 34
1440p at 30 fps 5 15 7 21
1080p at 60 fps 4 12 6 17
1080p at 30 fps 4 10 5 14
720p at 60 fps 2 6 3 8
720p at 30 fps 2 6 3 8
480p at 30 fps 0.3 3 0.4 4
360p at 30 fps 0.3 3 0.4 4

Source: YouTube Help, “Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions”. The guidance does not give a separate bitrate for still-image slideshows. A static image may not need 60 fps; 30 fps is a reasonable starting point for slides, while motion, transitions, source material, audience needs, and encoder capability can affect the choice.

Minimum versus recommended

The minimum is a listed lower threshold, while the recommended value is YouTube’s target for that encoding combination. If the connection can sustain the recommended rate with headroom, use it as your starting point. If it cannot, consider a lower resolution or frame rate and use the matching row rather than setting a bitrate your connection cannot reliably send.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Codec and audio format

YouTube’s RTMP/RTMPS guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video, with AAC or MP3 audio. Use a codec supported by your encoder and choose the corresponding bitrate column; do not assume an encoder supports every listed codec. YouTube detects the incoming settings and transcodes the stream for different devices and network conditions. See YouTube’s encoder settings guidance.

Set up the encoder and protect upload headroom

  1. Choose output settings. Set the intended resolution and frame rate in the encoder, then select the matching codec recommendation from the table. For a still-slide presentation, start with 30 fps unless the content or desired transitions call for more.
  2. Set rate control and keyframes. YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR) encoding and a keyframe interval of 2 seconds; do not exceed 4 seconds. Apply these settings in the encoder’s output or streaming settings.
  3. Check the real upload capacity. YouTube says the total stream bitrate must not exceed available upload bandwidth and recommends 20% headroom. Measure outbound upload capacity, not just download speed, and account for other devices or people using the connection. If sending primary and backup streams, include both bitrates in the total. See YouTube’s live encoder guidance and YouTube’s streaming tips.
  4. Enter the YouTube stream key in your encoder. In YouTube Live Control Room, configure the stream and copy its stream key into the encoder’s stream settings. Keep the key private: anyone with access to it may be able to send a stream to your event. Follow the on-screen instructions for the current Live Control Room interface.
  5. Run a realistic test. Test before the event with the same slide transitions and audio you intend to use. Check the stream preview, stream health, and any YouTube messages; monitor health during the event as well.

Build a repeating slideshow or media playlist in OBS

OBS provides separate sources for still-image slides and media playlists. Use Image Slide Show for individual image files or directories when you want slide timing and transitions. Use VLC Video for a playlist of video or audio media files; that source requires VLC to be installed. OBS’s documented defaults are settings, not recommendations for every presentation.

Content OBS source Useful controls
Still images Image Slide Show Automatic or manual mode, transitions, timing, loop, and randomized playback
Video or audio files VLC Video Playlist, loop, and shuffle; VLC installation required

Loop still images with Image Slide Show

  1. In OBS, add an Image Slide Show source to the scene and choose the image files or directories to include.
  2. Choose automatic playback or manual slide changes. For automatic playback, set the time between slides and the transition and its duration to suit the content.
  3. Enable Loop if the slideshow should restart after the final image. Enable randomized playback only if the order does not need to remain fixed.
  4. Preview the scene from beginning to end, including the transition from the last image back to the first, and confirm that any audio is present at the intended levels.

OBS documents Fade as the default transition, an 8,000-millisecond default time between slides, a 700-millisecond default transition speed, and looping enabled by default. Treat those as documented defaults, not an ideal duration for your own slides. See OBS’s Image Slide Show documentation.

Loop a playlist of video or audio files

  1. Install VLC if it is not already installed, then add the VLC Video source in OBS.
  2. Add the media files to the playlist and configure the source’s loop and shuffle controls as needed.
  3. Play through the media and confirm the intended sequence, audio, and restart behavior before connecting it to the live event.

VLC Video is for media files, not a replacement for Image Slide Show when you need per-image slideshow timing and transitions. See OBS’s VLC Video documentation.

Test and troubleshoot before going live

YouTube advises testing with audio and movement similar to the real stream. A slideshow test should include actual transitions, any audio, the full encoder configuration, and enough time to check stream health. The relevant YouTube guidance is Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

  • Stream health reports instability or dropped frames: Check whether outbound upload capacity is sufficient for the total bitrate with 20% headroom. Reduce the output bitrate, resolution, or frame rate if necessary; pause other heavy uploads and network use, then test again.
  • The event will not connect: Check that the encoder is using the stream key for the intended YouTube event and that its configured codec and output settings match the encoder setup in Live Control Room. Review YouTube’s on-screen status and messages.
  • The picture appears soft or blocky: Confirm the encoder is sending the intended resolution and bitrate, then compare those settings with the matching YouTube recommendation. A higher frame rate or bitrate is not automatically useful for static slides, and YouTube’s ingestion values do not guarantee a particular viewer-side result.
  • Slides stop at the end: Enable Loop in Image Slide Show and test the wrap from the last image to the first. For a VLC playlist, enable the playlist’s loop control and verify that the source reaches the end of the media.
  • Slides change too quickly, too slowly, or in the wrong order: Adjust Image Slide Show timing and transition settings; disable randomized playback if the listed order matters. For a media playlist, check its order and shuffle setting.
  • There is no audio: Confirm the intended audio source is active and included in the encoder’s stream mix, then test the same audio path before the event. For a media playlist, check the file’s audio and the VLC source output.
