To create a thumbnail that includes content loaded by infinite scroll, first scroll the page far enough to trigger that content, wait until the items and images you need are ready, and only then capture a screenshot. A full-page screenshot records the page’s current rendered state; it does not necessarily trigger every site’s scroll-dependent loading on its own.
Why a full-page screenshot can miss content
Pages often defer loading images or append more items until a target approaches the viewport. The Intersection Observer API lets a page respond when a target intersects the viewport or a scrollable ancestor; lazy loading during scrolling is one use. Some sites use other mechanisms, so the exact trigger varies.
A browser’s load event is not a reliable signal that all below-the-fold resources are ready. MDN explains that lazy-loaded resources may still be pending after that event (Lazy loading). Likewise, a screenshot’s full-page option describes the capture area, not a guarantee that the page has fetched or rendered every item.
Choose a screenshot approach
| Approach | Use it when | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| One full-page image | The page is a manageable length, the desired items remain in the document, and the thumbnail should show the entire page. | Very tall output can be unwieldy; virtualized feeds may remove offscreen items rather than keep them all in the document. |
| Viewport or section captures | The feed is extremely long or virtualized, or the final thumbnail needs only selected content. | You may need to crop or assemble sections, and the result is not automatically a single continuous representation of the page. |
These are workflow choices, not guarantees from the browser libraries. Verify the output against the site’s behavior and the thumbnail’s intended crop.

Automate scrolling and capture with Playwright
Playwright’s screenshot API supports full-page capture; its documentation defines that as capturing the full scrollable page. See Playwright screenshots and the Page screenshot API. The example below uses Node.js and Chromium. It scrolls in controlled steps, waits briefly after each step for the page to react, then waits for image elements to finish loading before saving a full-page PNG. Replace the URL and, ideally, the example completion condition with a selector or item-count condition specific to the target site.
Install the package and browser once:
npm install playwright
npx playwright install chromium
Save as thumbnail.mjs and run with node thumbnail.mjs:

// Example stop condition only: adapt this for the target site's end marker,
// expected item count, or loading indicator when available.

}
await page.evaluate(async () => {

await browser.close();
}
The loop is deliberately bounded: a feed that keeps adding content forever must not create an unbounded screenshot job. Its height-stability check is only a fallback, not proof that the feed is complete. If the site has a “Load more” button, a known number of items, or an end marker, use that explicit signal instead. The image wait covers image elements present in the document when it runs; it cannot prove that all desired feed items were fetched, and it does not check every possible CSS background image.
Use a site-specific ready condition
For repeatable results, inspect the page and choose a condition that reflects the content you actually need: a target item count, a known final card, or a loading indicator disappearing. MDN’s Intersection Observer reference notes that observation can use an ancestor element or the viewport as its root. If the page scrolls inside a nested panel, scroll that container rather than window; otherwise, the sentinel may never intersect the right scrolling area.

For lazy-loaded images, wait for the required image elements to be complete and, when image content matters, verify that they loaded successfully. MDN discusses deferred image loading and recommends width and height attributes to reduce layout shifts (HTML image element). A failed image can be complete without containing a usable image, so visual inspection or checking naturalWidth is useful when missing images matter.

For Puppeteer, use the same workflow: navigate, scroll the relevant document or container in bounded increments, wait for a site-specific completion signal and required images, then capture. Its API exposes page screenshots and element screenshots; consult the linked guide for current options rather than assuming the same method signatures as Playwright.

ScreenshotNeo provides a one-request screenshot API. Its clean-shot flow accepts cookie or consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; those steps can be turned off. Only clean shots are billed: bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and responses include X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. Its MCP server offers take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The API supports multiple capture options, but this one-call example does not implement a custom infinite-scroll trigger; use browser automation above when you must deliberately scroll and verify a particular feed’s completion.

Check the image and troubleshoot common failures
- Missing cards near the bottom: the capture may have run before a scroll trigger loaded them, or the page may use a nested scroll container. Scroll the actual container and wait for an item-count or end-of-feed signal.
- Images are blank: wait for the required image elements after scrolling, check failed loads, and verify the final image rather than relying on the window
loadevent. - The screenshot is too short: check whether the page appended items to the document or loaded them inside a fixed-height panel. Capture the panel or scroll it before capturing.
- The full-page result omits earlier cards: the application may virtualize its feed, keeping only nearby items in the DOM. Capture the relevant viewport or sections instead of assuming one full-page image contains every item.
- The job runs indefinitely: cap scroll steps and total runtime; replace height stability with a site-specific stopping condition where possible.
- The thumbnail crop looks wrong: fix the viewport and browser scale, then inspect the output dimensions and crop at the size where the thumbnail will be displayed.
A screenshot is only a visual snapshot of what the browser rendered. It does not certify that the site’s complete data set was fetched. For consistent thumbnail dimensions, keep the viewport and browser configuration fixed, and review the bottom of the capture and representative images before publishing.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a full-page screenshot automatically load every item in an infinite feed?
No. It captures the currently rendered page area; scrolling or another site-specific trigger may be needed first.
Can I use this method on a page that requires scrolling inside a panel?
Yes, but automation must scroll the panel that the page uses as its scroll container, not the top-level window.
