Use FFmpeg’s -stream_loop -1 input option to repeat a gaming VOD indefinitely while sending it to YouTube Live. Put the option before -i. That keeps the file feeding the encoder, but it cannot guarantee a seamless-sounding or seamless-looking join: the VOD’s audio, video, timestamps, and encoding determine what happens at each repeat.
FFmpeg command for an endless YouTube Live loop
This example reads a local MP4 at its recorded rate, encodes H.264 video and AAC audio, and sends the output to the RTMPS destination for your YouTube stream:

-f flv "rtmps://SERVER/live2/STREAM_KEY"Replace gaming-vod.mp4 with the file’s path and replace the destination with the stream URL and key shown in YouTube Live Control Room. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it, commit it to a repository, or expose it in a shared log.
-rereads file input at its native rate, making it suitable for a live-style feed rather than sending the file as fast as possible.-stream_loop -1is an input option that repeats the input indefinitely. It must appear before-i.-c:v libx264and-c:a aacencode video and audio in common YouTube ingest formats.-b:v 10Msets the example video bitrate to 10 Mbps;-maxrateand-bufsizeconstrain rate variation.-g 60sets a 60-frame GOP. It represents a two-second keyframe interval only at 30 fps. Adjust it for the output frame rate.-b:a 160ksets the example audio bitrate.-f flvselects the container used for this RTMP-style output.
The sample bitrate is illustrative for 1080p30 H.264, not a universal setting. This mapping-free command also assumes the input has both video and audio streams. Check the source before using it; if a stream is absent or needs trimming, explicitly map the intended streams and correct their durations rather than expecting this example to fix them.

Set up the YouTube Live destination
- In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or select the stream.
- Copy that stream’s server URL and stream key into the FFmpeg output destination. The values are specific to the account or stream; keep the key private.
- Start FFmpeg, then check the preview in Live Control Room and monitor stream health before promoting the event.
- When finished, stop the encoder and end the stream in Live Control Room as appropriate.
YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. First-time live-streaming enablement can take up to 24 hours, according to YouTube Help. YouTube also says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; that is an archival note, not a promise of an unlimited uninterrupted broadcast.
Choose encoder settings that fit the source and connection
YouTube Help’s current encoder guidance supports RTMP/RTMPS ingest, H.264, H.265, or AV1 video, and AAC or MP3 audio. It recommends constant bitrate (CBR), up to 60 fps, and a two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. Its H.264 examples recommend 10 Mbps for 1080p30 and 12 Mbps for 1080p60. These are guidance values, not a reason to force a higher bitrate than your upload connection can reliably sustain.

- Match resolution and frame rate to the VOD and the stream you intend to send. A higher bitrate cannot restore detail that is absent from the source.
- For a 30 fps output,
-g 60corresponds to the recommended two-second interval; for another frame rate, set the GOP length to roughly twice the frame rate, while staying within YouTube’s four-second maximum. - Allow upload headroom. YouTube recommends 20% above the total stream bitrate. Include audio when estimating the total, and test using representative gameplay movement and audio.
- Check stream health in Live Control Room during a test. If the connection cannot sustain the selected rate, reduce the stream settings rather than assuming a higher bitrate will improve reliability.
Make the repeat boundary as clean as the source allows
An infinite input loop means FFmpeg keeps repeating the file; it does not promise a perceptually gap-free boundary. Audio and video can have different durations, and timestamp or codec-boundary behavior can produce a pause, discontinuity, or repeated frame at the join. FFmpeg’s concat documentation notes that timestamp adjustment can cause gaps when streams are not exactly the same length, and that concatenated inputs need matching streams, codecs, and time bases. Those concat notes are not proof that every single-file loop will gap, but they explain why the actual source and join should be checked.
- Inspect the VOD’s video and audio streams and their durations. Confirm that both expected streams exist and note any mismatch.
- Loop it locally several times. Watch and listen across each boundary, not just the beginning and end of the first pass.
- If audio outlasts video or video outlasts audio, prepare a corrected source or explicitly map and trim streams to a common duration.
- Run a private or unlisted YouTube test and inspect both the preview and stream-health indicators at the join.
- If you see a pause despite using the loop option correctly, investigate source timestamps, encoding structure, and stream lengths before changing unrelated hardware or settings.
Troubleshoot common failures
