Scroll each observed element into the area watched by its IntersectionObserver, wait for the content you need to appear, and only then take a full-page screenshot. A full-page capture expands the image to cover the page; it does not automatically trigger every observer or wait for the work those observers start.
Why a full-page screenshot can miss content
IntersectionObserver asynchronously notifies a page when a target intersects its configured root or crosses a configured threshold. The root can be the document viewport or an element, such as a scrollable panel. Pages commonly use observers for lazy loading and infinite scrolling, so content may not be requested or rendered until you scroll the relevant target into view. MDN’s Intersection Observer guide explains the API and its roots and thresholds.
A full-page screenshot concerns how much of the page is captured, not whether the page’s scripts have caused all below-the-fold content to load. Playwright describes fullPage: true as capturing the full scrollable page as if it fit on a very tall screen. Prepare the page before using that option. Playwright’s screenshot documentation covers full-page capture.
Likewise, an observer’s first callback does not prove its target has entered the visible area: MDN notes that the callback runs after the first render cycle following observe(), and an offscreen target can have isIntersecting set to false.

Prepare the page before capture
Wait for the right initial state
Navigate to the page and wait for the initial state you need, such as a completed navigation or a known page element. Do not treat the browser’s load event as proof that lazy content is ready. MDN says, “The load event fires when the eagerly-loaded content has all been loaded.”
Find the observer’s scroll root
Determine whether the observed elements use the window viewport or a nested scrollable element as their observer root. If a panel is the root, scrolling the document while the panel itself stays put will not bring its targets into that panel’s visible area. Scroll the context that actually moves the targets through the configured root.

Choose a content-specific readiness check
After each scroll, give observer callbacks, resulting requests, and rendering time to complete. Prefer a condition that proves the content you care about exists—for example, waiting for a known heading or item—over an arbitrary delay. For images, inspect whether loading completed and succeeded: an image’s complete property alone should be interpreted alongside whether it loaded successfully.
Scroll, verify, then take a full-page screenshot
- Navigate: Open the target page and wait for its necessary initial state.
- Identify the scroll context: Use the window for viewport-rooted targets or the relevant element for targets observed inside a nested scroller.
- Scroll in steps: Move through the relevant targets so each has a chance to intersect the correct root. Allow the page’s observer callback and content work to run after movement.
- Verify the required content: Wait for site-specific evidence, such as a known text string, element, or successfully loaded image.
- Continue if needed: If new content extends the page, scroll through the newly added area too. For an infinite-scroll page, decide in advance what counts as done, such as the presence of a known final item.
- Capture: Once the required content is present, take the full-page screenshot.
Illustrative Playwright example
This JavaScript pattern scrolls the document in viewport-sized increments, waits for a target text, and saves a full-page image. Replace the text and adapt the scrolling and readiness check for the page you are capturing. The example is illustrative, not a tested result for a particular site.

})();For a nested scroller, replace the document scrolling with scrolling that element, and check for content inside it. The fixed 150-millisecond pause is only an example; it cannot guarantee that a site’s callbacks, requests, or rendering have finished. A page-specific condition is stronger.
Handle infinite scroll and nested containers
Nested scroll containers
Scroll the element that serves as the observer root. In Playwright, a locator can target a known scrollable panel and scroll it, for example with locator.evaluate(el => el.scrollTop = el.scrollHeight). Repeat in steps if loading depends on intermediate intersections, and wait for the panel’s expected content. A window-level scroll alone is not a substitute when the panel does not move.

Infinite-scroll pages
One pass over the initial viewport may only load the first batch. Continue scrolling as new items appear, checking after each pass for the content that marks completion. Some pages have no natural end, so set an explicit stopping rule—such as reaching a known item, a maximum item count, or a defined page boundary—rather than waiting indefinitely for the page to stop growing.
Troubleshoot missing or incomplete content
- Only the top of the page appears: The capture may have happened before offscreen targets entered their observer root. Scroll through the page before capturing, then verify the required content.
- Scrolling the page does not load items in a panel: The observed targets may use a nested element as their root. Scroll that container and wait for its content to change.
- The script says the page loaded, but images are missing: The
loadevent covers eagerly loaded content, not necessarily lazy resources. Trigger the relevant intersections and check image completion and success. - The first observer callback runs but content remains absent: The initial callback can report an offscreen target with
isIntersectingfalse. Confirm that the target actually intersects the correct root. - Network idle arrives but the page is not ready: Do not use generic network-idle as the only readiness test. Playwright discourages
networkidlefor testing and recommends assertions to assess readiness. Wait for the particular text or element required for the screenshot. Playwright’s load-state documentation describes this guidance. - The page keeps growing: It may be infinite scrolling. Establish a stopping condition tied to the content you need instead of assuming one pass or a fixed page height is sufficient.
- Content is gated by login, consent, or application state: Scrolling cannot satisfy unrelated prerequisites. Complete the required site-specific action, then use an appropriate readiness check.
