You can schedule website screenshots without keeping your own computer on: run a browser-capture script on a hosted workflow runner. A practical route is Playwright or shot-scraper with GitHub Actions. The browser and scheduler are separate parts: the workflow starts the capture at the chosen interval, then saves the resulting image to a repository, an artifact, or another storage destination.
How scheduled website screenshots work
A capture tool loads and renders the page; a scheduler decides when that tool runs. With a hosted runner, both steps happen on a remote machine rather than your desktop or laptop. You do not need to leave a personal computer running, but you do need to configure the workflow, decide where images go, and check that the scheduled job continues to run.
For a code-first setup, Playwright provides browser automation and screenshot capture. GitHub Actions can run the script on a cron schedule. Alternatively, shot-scraper documents an Actions workflow that reads capture settings from shots.yml and writes screenshots back to the repository.
Capture a page with Playwright
Playwright’s screenshot method is page.screenshot(). This minimal example captures the currently visible viewport after the page loads:

await browser.close();Save it as screenshot.mjs. Install Playwright and its browser in the project using the current instructions in the Playwright screenshot documentation; browser installation is required on the machine that executes the capture, including a hosted runner.
Choose the capture boundary
- Viewport: the visible screen at the configured viewport size; this is what the example captures.
- Full page: the full scrollable document. Use
await page.screenshot({ path: 'full-page.png', fullPage: true });. For pages with lazy-loaded images, a full-page capture may require scrolling or other page-specific preparation so content has loaded before capture. - One element: a selected region. For example,

Playwright also documents image format, clipping, and quality options. Set the viewport and capture boundary deliberately: a viewport screenshot is not a substitute for a full-page archive, and a full-page image can be very tall.
Run the capture on a GitHub Actions schedule
Put the script in a repository and add a workflow file such as .github/workflows/screenshot.yml. The example below uses a scheduled trigger and uploads the output as a workflow artifact. Use current, maintained action and runtime versions when adapting it; version numbers are intentionally not pinned here because action releases change.

Schedule rules that affect whether the job runs
- The workflow file must be on the repository’s default branch. A scheduled workflow runs from the latest commit on that branch.
- GitHub Actions uses POSIX cron syntax; its documented shortest schedule interval is once every five minutes.
- GitHub warns that scheduled jobs can be delayed during high load, especially around the start of an hour, and queued jobs may be dropped. Choosing a minute away from
00can avoid the most crowded start-of-hour window, but does not guarantee an exact capture time. - Scheduled workflows in public repositories are automatically disabled after 60 days without repository activity. If screenshots stop, check the workflow’s enabled status and run history.
For exact capture times or a guaranteed cadence, do not treat a cron schedule as a real-time guarantee. Select an execution system with service guarantees that fit the timing requirement.
Choose where screenshots are saved
Workflow artifacts
Artifacts are convenient for retrieving files produced by a particular run without committing generated images into the source history. GitHub documents a 90-day default retention period for workflow artifacts and logs. If you need a longer archive, configure retention where available or copy the images to durable storage.

Commit images to the repository
Committing each capture creates a versioned series and is the pattern shown in the shot-scraper Actions example. It can work for a small set of images, but repeated captures increase repository size. Think carefully before committing screenshots of authenticated, private, or otherwise sensitive pages: anyone with access to the repository may be able to view them.
Use another destination when the archive needs it
If the images must be retained beyond artifact expiry, shared with people who do not have repository access, or kept outside source control, configure a destination designed for that purpose. The appropriate storage, access controls, and retention policy depend on the sensitivity and duration of the captures.

If you prefer a configuration-driven approach, shot-scraper documents a GitHub Actions workflow that installs its dependencies, reads screenshot definitions from shots.yml, takes the captures, and writes the files back to the repository. Its documentation provides the workflow example. The same scheduling caveats apply because Actions is still the runner.

Troubleshoot missed or unusable captures
- No scheduled run appears: confirm the workflow file is on the default branch, the schedule uses valid cron syntax, and the workflow is enabled. In a public repository, check whether it was disabled after 60 days without activity.
- The run starts late or not at all: scheduled jobs can be delayed or dropped under high load. Avoid scheduling exactly at the top of the hour when practical; use a system with appropriate timing guarantees if a missed or late capture is unacceptable.
- The browser cannot launch: install the browser and its required system dependencies on the runner. In the workflow example,
npx playwright install --with-deps chromiumhandles the Chromium installation step for the Ubuntu runner. - The screenshot is blank or incomplete: inspect the run logs and confirm the page loaded before capture. Pages that render content after initial navigation may need a page-specific wait; for full-page captures, lazy-loaded content may need to be loaded by scrolling or other preparation.
- The screenshot file is missing after a successful run: verify the script’s output path matches the artifact upload path. If the script writes somewhere other than the repository’s working directory, update the workflow accordingly.
- The archive stops growing: check artifact retention and repository size. Artifacts expire according to retention settings; committing repeated image files adds to repository history.
Plan for reliability, privacy, and cost
A GitHub Actions workflow removes the need to keep a personal computer running, but it still depends on a hosted runner, workflow configuration, and the target site being available when the job runs. Use the run history to spot failures, and decide how you will be notified or recover if a capture is important. Schedules are not a substitute for guaranteed timing.

Estimate the number of captures from the schedule and number of URLs—for example, one URL captured daily yields roughly one capture per day, while ten URLs captured daily yield roughly ten. Also account for artifact storage or repository growth, and protect credentials if the page requires authentication. Avoid storing sensitive screenshots in a public repository or exposing secrets in logs.
When choosing between a hosted script and a managed screenshot service, compare setup and maintenance, schedule precision, viewport/full-page/element support, authenticated-page needs, interaction requirements, storage and retention, failure alerts, and cost at your intended volume. The DIY workflow offers control over the browser script and output; a service may reduce browser installation and maintenance, but verify its current scheduling, retention, quota, and billing terms before relying on it.
