For an eligible YouTube Live stream, open Create → Go live → Stream, enable Closed captions, choose Automatic captions, and set the video language to English. Automatic live captions require normal latency and may not be available on every channel yet. YouTube’s guidance covers live streams generally—not every continuous loop of prerecorded lectures—so test your exact stream and check the recording afterward.
Option 1: Turn on YouTube automatic live captions
- In YouTube, select Create → Go live, then choose Stream.
- In the stream settings, turn on Closed captions.
- Choose Automatic captions as the caption source.
- Set the video language to English.
- Use normal latency. YouTube says live automatic captions are available only at normal latency; the setting may be missing if the feature has not rolled out to your channel yet. See YouTube’s live automatic-caption guidance.
Automatic speech recognition can make mistakes. Audio clarity, long silences, background noise, accents, dialects, mispronunciations, and overlapping speakers can affect what appears. Check the live captions during a test, and review the recording’s captions after YouTube processes it.
What to know about captions on a continuous lecture loop
Live captions and recording captions are separate
YouTube says live automatic captions disappear when the stream ends. It generates captions for the video-on-demand (VOD) recording separately, and those captions may differ from the live version. Do not assume the live text will remain on the archived lecture; inspect the finished recording and its captions.
Test the actual 24/7 stream
YouTube’s help describes live captions generally; it does not specify whether a 24/7 stream looping prerecorded lectures has exactly the same eligibility or behavior as a conventional live lecture. Run a test using the same stream configuration you intend to keep, confirm captions appear during the broadcast, and then check the VOD after the stream ends.

Option 2: Supply professional captions to YouTube
If automatic captions are unavailable, do not meet your accuracy needs, or do not support the language you need, YouTube documents two professional-caption routes: embed EIA 608/CEA 708 captions in the video, or use supported caption software to send captions through HTTP POSTs. See YouTube’s live caption setup instructions.
Embedded EIA 608/CEA 708 captions
- Open the stream’s closed-caption settings and select Embedded 608/708.
- Configure your encoder to include EIA 608 or CEA 708 caption data in the video stream.
- Test the broadcast and confirm that captions display as expected.
Caption software over HTTP
- Configure closed captions for the stream and obtain YouTube’s signed captions ingestion URL.
- Give that URL to the captioner or configure the supported caption software to send its feed to YouTube.
- Follow YouTube’s event instructions to add a 30- or 60-second broadcast delay.
- Test caption delivery before relying on the feed during a continuous stream.
YouTube documents one caption feed per stream entry point. Its live-caption documentation names Total Eclipse, Case CATalyst, CaptionMaker, and StreamText.Net; it describes StreamText.Net as cloud-based caption delivery software compatible with speech-to-text platforms. Confirm current vendor requirements, language support, and availability with the provider before choosing a service.

Troubleshoot missing or inaccurate captions
- No automatic-caption choice: YouTube says availability is rolling out gradually. The feature may not yet be enabled for your channel; check again later or consider a professional-caption route.
- Captions unavailable at low or ultra-low latency: Switch to normal latency; YouTube documents automatic live captions for normal-latency streams.
- Wrong or missing words: Verify that the video language is English, then check speech clarity, background noise, silence, and overlapping speakers. Recognition can also be affected by accents, dialects, and mispronunciations.
- Captions vanish when the stream ends: That is expected for live automatic captions. Wait for YouTube to generate VOD captions, then inspect the recording separately.
- A professional feed does not appear: Verify the selected caption method, the encoder’s embedded 608/708 data or the caption software’s ingestion URL, and that the stream entry point is configured for its single caption feed.
