To crossfade ambient nature videos in OBS, put each clip in its own scene, select OBS’s built-in Fade scene transition, set its duration, then switch between the scenes. This gives you a straightforward visual dissolve; OBS does not document per-clip crossfades for a playlist in a single VLC Video source.
Set up one scene for each video

In the Scenes dock, create a scene for each nature clip. Give scenes clear names, such as “Forest” and “Waterfall,” so you can tell which clip will appear when you switch.

With a scene selected, use the Sources dock to add a Media Source. Choose the local video file. OBS documents common formats including MP4, MOV, MKV, and WebM. Enable Loop if you want that clip to repeat while its scene is active. Repeat for each scene and its video. See the OBS Media Sources guide.

Match the framing across scenes where possible. Arrange each scene’s sources so the video fills the intended area, and keep any foreground elements—such as text or a logo—above the video in the source order. OBS displays sources in order, with higher sources appearing over lower ones; see the OBS Sources Guide.

Choose and use the Fade transition

Find the Scene Transitions dock and select Fade. OBS includes Fade as a built-in scene transition. The active transition’s duration is adjustable; enter a duration that suits the pace of your footage. The OBS guide does not prescribe one ideal duration, so treat it as a creative choice and preview the result. See the OBS Studio Overview Guide.

Switch from one clip’s scene to another. OBS applies the selected Fade, visually dissolving the outgoing scene into the incoming one. Adjust the duration and preview again if the change feels too abrupt or too slow.

Check both the picture and sound in an OBS recording or test stream. A scene Fade describes the visual transition; the right audio behavior depends on your sources and setup, so listen to the actual output rather than assuming the audio will blend as desired.

Choose between separate scenes and a playlist

VLC Video relies on VLC libraries, so VLC must be installed for the source to appear. OBS notes that 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. For documented clip-to-clip dissolves, use separate scenes and Fade rather than assuming a playlist will add transitions. Details are in the Media Sources guide.

If you want scenes to change hands-free, you can use the third-party Advanced Scene Switcher plugin to automate scene changes with macros. Its OBS forum listing describes support for Windows, macOS, and Linux. At the time the listing was checked, it showed version 1.36.1, last updated August 7, 2026, and OBS Studio 31.1.1 as the minimum version. These details can change; check the listing for current compatibility before installing. Automation changes scenes, while the selected OBS Fade supplies the visual transition.
Create a mask-based transition
For an effect beyond a simple dissolve, OBS’s Track Matte Stinger can use a mask to blend scenes. Black in the matte shows the current scene, white shows the next scene, and gray values create partial blending. For a combined stinger and matte, OBS recommends putting them in one file: separate files are disabled because OBS cannot guarantee they will decode in sync. This option takes more preparation than the built-in Fade. See the Track Matte Stinger Transitions guide.

Troubleshoot the result

The transition cuts instead of dissolving: Check the Scene Transitions dock and select Fade rather than Cut before switching scenes.

The dissolve is too quick or slow: Adjust the active Fade duration in the Scene Transitions dock and preview another scene switch. OBS does not set a universal best duration.

A clip does not appear in a scene: Confirm the intended scene is selected, the Media Source points to the correct local file, and the source is visible and positioned correctly in the Sources dock.

The VLC Video source is unavailable: Install VLC. If you use 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC as well.

A VLC playlist changes clips without a dissolve: Playlist playback and looping do not establish per-entry crossfades in OBS’s documentation. Put each clip in its own scene and switch with Fade instead.

Foreground text or graphics disappear behind the video: Move those sources above the video in the Sources dock.

The picture blends but the sound does not suit the change: Listen to a test recording or stream and review how your audio sources behave during the scene switch. The visual Fade alone does not establish a particular audio mix.
