To capture content that loads as you scroll, use Selenium to scroll through the page, wait for a page-specific signal that new content has appeared, and then take the screenshot. Scrolling triggers many lazy-loading behaviors, but a normal Selenium screenshot still captures only the current browser window—not the entire document.

Scroll first, then wait for the content you need

Lazy loading defers some resources until they are likely to be needed. It often responds to scrolling or navigation, but exactly when content appears depends on the page and its implementation. MDN’s lazy-loading guide describes scrolling and navigation as common triggers.

Selenium’s driver.get() ordinarily waits for the page’s load event, but that does not guarantee later JavaScript-driven content is ready. The better pattern is to scroll, then wait for evidence that matters on the target page: a particular element becoming visible, a result count increasing, or a known end marker appearing. Selenium’s waits guide shows explicit waits for conditions such as element visibility.

Runnable Python template for a bounded page

This generic example scrolls down by part of the viewport, waits for a page-specific element to become visible after each step, and saves a viewport screenshot at the bottom. Replace the URL and selector with values for the page you are capturing. The selector must identify content that appears only after scrolling; if the site loads batches or uses another signal, adapt the wait condition.

raise OSError(f"Could not save screenshot to {output_path}")
finally:
    driver.quit()

The sample is a template, not a universal completion test. As written, visibility of the selected element confirms that at least one matching element is visible; it does not prove every item on the page has loaded. For a results feed, a stronger condition is often that the number of cards increases after each scroll. For a known page, wait for its end marker or final expected item. Selenium’s execute_script() runs JavaScript synchronously in the current window or frame, and save_screenshot() saves the current window as PNG; see the Selenium Python WebDriver API.

Choose the right stopping condition

Wait for a known element

Use an explicit wait for a specific image, card, or other element when its appearance is a reliable signal. If the page has repeated cards, track the count before and after scrolling and wait for it to increase. Waiting for mere presence is not always enough: an element can exist in the DOM before it is visible or fully populated.

Wait for document height to stabilize

If the page appends content and no useful selector is available, poll document.body.scrollHeight and stop only after it remains unchanged for several checks. A single unchanged reading is not conclusive: delayed requests may append content afterward. Use a maximum number of scrolls or an overall timeout so an endless feed cannot run forever.

Use a short delay only as a fallback

A fixed sleep after each scroll is simple but does not confirm that anything loaded. Prefer WebDriverWait and a condition tied to the page. If no observable condition is available, a bounded delay can be a practical fallback, but verify the captured state rather than treating elapsed time as proof.

Account for custom scrollers and feeds

  • Nested scroll container: If the page scrolls inside a panel, find that element and scroll it with JavaScript or send it scroll input. Scrolling window will not necessarily move the panel.
  • Infinite feed: Stop at a target item, known end marker, maximum scroll count, or time budget. An endless feed has no natural final screenshot point.
  • Delayed or batched loading: Scroll in increments, then wait for the next batch’s signal before continuing. A single jump to the bottom can skip intermediate triggers on some pages.
  • Images not yet rendered: Bring each target near the viewport and check its loaded state before capturing. Lazy-load thresholds and exact trigger behavior vary by page and browser.

Viewport screenshot or full-page image?

Scrolling is useful to trigger lazy loading, but it does not change the extent of Selenium’s standard screenshot methods: they capture the current browser window. To save the bottom viewport, scroll to the bottom before calling save_screenshot(). To capture a particular section, scroll it into view first.

For a full-document screenshot, Selenium’s Firefox Python API documents get_full_page_screenshot_as_file() and save_full_page_screenshot(). These are Firefox-driver-specific methods; check compatibility with the browser and driver version you use. See the Firefox WebDriver API. Do not assume the standard current-window screenshot method produces one tall image.

Make captures consistent and handle failures

  • Set the viewport: Use driver.set_window_size(width, height) when the viewport dimensions should be repeatable; responsive layouts may otherwise show different content.
  • Check the save result: Selenium’s screenshot method returns a boolean. Treat False as a failure rather than silently reporting success.
  • Always close the browser: Put work in a try/finally block and call driver.quit(), including when a wait or screenshot fails.
  • Use a page-specific timeout: A wait can time out if the selector is wrong, the page did not load the expected content, or the page uses a different trigger. Log the URL and condition that failed to diagnose it.

Troubleshooting

The screenshot is missing content below the fold

save_screenshot() captures the current window. Scroll to the desired position before capture, or use a supported full-page method if you need the whole document in one image.

Content is still missing after scrolling

Confirm that you are scrolling the correct context: the main window, an iframe, or a nested scroll panel. Then inspect the page for a reliable signal, such as a newly visible card, increased item count, or end marker. A fixed pause or a completed navigation event alone cannot establish that later dynamic content has appeared.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The script stops after one scroll or times out

Check that the selector matches content that actually appears after scrolling. A selector that matches an already-visible element may not prove a new batch loaded; a selector that matches nothing will time out. For repeated content, compare counts before and after scrolling and stop when the count no longer increases or a known endpoint is reached.

The page never finishes

Some feeds continue loading indefinitely. Set a maximum scroll count, a target item, or a deadline. Do not use a loop that waits forever for document height to stop changing.

No PNG appears at the output path

Check the process’s working directory and the destination path, and verify that the screenshot call returned True. Selenium documents get_screenshot_as_file() as returning false on an I/O error; consult the Python API if you use that alternative.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use Selenium to save a screenshot as JPEG or WebP?

The Selenium screenshot methods described here save PNG. If you need another format, convert the saved image with an image-processing library.

Does scrolling guarantee every lazy-loaded image has finished loading?

No. Scrolling can trigger lazy loading, but the page’s own loading behavior determines when content appears. Wait for and verify a relevant page-specific signal.

Can I capture content inside an iframe?

You must switch WebDriver into the relevant frame before interacting with its document, and switch back when finished. The example assumes the content is in the main page context.
