If YouTube keeps buffering on a Singapore VPS, compare playback and network measurements from the VPS with the same video on another connection, at the same time. Record the player’s throughput and buffer behavior, resolve the relevant video hostnames, and repeat route observations during both good and bad periods. A ping or traceroute can add context, but neither proves that a particular hop is causing buffering.
What a Singapore VPS location does—and doesn’t—tell you
A VPS described as being in Singapore does not establish that its traffic takes a short or direct route to the server delivering a particular YouTube video. Google says YouTube content may be served by a local Google Global Cache (GGC), from Google core locations, or through peering and transit. Less popular, uncached content can follow a different path. Google selects serving locations using factors that include application performance, demand, capacity, maintenance, legal requirements and DNS resolver configuration; it explicitly says ICMP ping latency is not used to select the serving location. Google’s Content Served documentation describes this general model, not the route for your unnamed VPS.
Google describes peering as an interconnection where Google exchanges traffic with local ISPs, which then carry content toward end users. The VPS provider’s network and upstream connections can therefore matter alongside Google’s network. Without the provider, destination, timestamps and measurements, there is no basis for blaming a specific hop, provider or network segment.
Test whether the problem is specific to the VPS
- Choose a repeatable comparison. Play the same video at the same time from the VPS and an independent connection, such as a home or mobile connection. Keep the playback quality the same where possible. YouTube’s general buffering guidance includes trying a different internet connection.
- Note what happens on each connection. Record whether playback starts promptly, stalls, or recovers, and whether the independent connection plays normally while the VPS buffers. If only the VPS stalls, that makes its path a useful focus for further testing; it does not identify which network segment is responsible.
- Repeat during a good period if possible. Comparing the same VPS during both a buffering period and a period when playback works can help distinguish a recurring pattern from a one-off observation.
Capture playback evidence while the video is buffering
For every comparison, record the exact date and time in UTC, video quality, player-reported connection speed or throughput if available, and what the buffer indicator does. Note any manual quality changes and whether they affect playback. YouTube recommends trying a different playback quality; this can help establish whether lower data demand changes the symptom, but it does not by itself diagnose the route.

These application-level observations matter because a ping measures ICMP responses, not the video delivery performance the player experiences. Google’s network diagnostic guidance describes ping and traceroute as tools to help locate delays or confirm reachability, and notes that they do not measure DNS resolution speed.
Resolve the relevant hostname and observe the route
- Identify the destination involved in playback. From the VPS, record which YouTube or video hostnames are relevant and resolve them. Save the returned IP addresses, the DNS resolver used, and the time of each lookup. The hostname
youtube.comis not necessarily the endpoint carrying video chunks, so a trace to that site alone may not represent the playback path. - Repeat route observations to the actual destination. During both a buffering period and a good period, run ping or traceroute to the relevant destination address and save the complete output with timestamps. Repetition helps reveal whether an observation coincides with the symptom; a single trace is only a snapshot.
- Compare IP versions only when applicable. If the VPS actually uses both IPv4 and IPv6 for the connection under investigation, collect comparable observations for each. Do not infer an IPv4-versus-IPv6 problem from a route family that playback is not using.
- Keep the tests comparable. Note the VPS provider and region, resolver, destination address, test time and whether playback was good or bad. Changing several network variables at once makes comparisons harder to interpret.
Interpret ping and traceroute cautiously
- An unanswered intermediate hop is not proof of packet loss affecting video. Routers may deprioritize ICMP responses or rate-limit error replies while still forwarding user traffic.
- A high ICMP time on one hop is not proof that the video flow is congested there. Route output is supporting context; look for repeated correlation with end-to-end playback behavior and application measurements.
- A low ping does not establish which YouTube cache or serving location is in use. Google says ICMP ping latency does not determine its serving-location choice.
- A DNS result does not prove DNS is the cause. Google lists resolver configuration among factors in serving-location selection, but that does not show that changing DNS will improve this VPS’s playback.
Escalate with a useful evidence bundle
If the buffering appears limited to the VPS
Contact the VPS provider and ask it to inspect the relevant upstream path and check for congestion or loss during the supplied intervals. Include:

- Dual-band Wi-Fi with 5 GHz speeds up to 867 Mbps and 2.4 GHz speeds up to 300 Mbps, delivering 1200 Mbps of total bandwidth¹. Dual-band routers do not support 6 GHz. Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- Covers up to 1,000 sq. ft. with four external antennas for stable wireless connections and optimal coverage.
- Supports IGMP Proxy/Snooping, Bridge and Tag VLAN to optimize IPTV streaming
- Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
- Advanced Security with WPA3 - The latest Wi-Fi security protocol, WPA3, brings new capabilities to improve cybersecurity in personal networks
- Provider and VPS region, operating system if known, and exact UTC timestamps.
- The video quality, player throughput or connection-speed readings, and buffer behavior during good and bad periods.
- The relevant hostname, resolved destination addresses, resolver used and lookup times.
- Full, repeated ping or traceroute output to the relevant destination, labeled by time and whether playback was buffering.
- The result of the same-video comparison from an independent connection.
This is a practical escalation to the organization that controls the VPS’s connectivity, not proof that its network is at fault. Ask the provider to investigate the path rather than presenting an unanswered hop or a long trace as a diagnosis.
If YouTube problems extend beyond the VPS
Use YouTube’s in-product feedback or support route and include the playback details and diagnostics. Google’s reporting guidance directs users to the relevant support path for Google-property issues and recommends including diagnostic information.

Common troubleshooting missteps
- Tracing only to
youtube.com: that may not be the host serving video chunks. Identify the relevant playback destination before treating the trace as representative. - Blaming peering from one long trace: route visibility and ICMP response behavior do not establish congestion or loss on the video flow. Compare repeated observations with player measurements and the independent connection.
- Changing DNS as a presumed fix: resolver configuration can be one factor in serving-location selection, but there is no guarantee a resolver change improves this case. Record the resolver and results before drawing a conclusion.
- Treating a successful ping as proof the video path is healthy: ping does not measure DNS speed or application-level video throughput. Record player behavior during the actual stall.
