AWS CloudFormation automates a live-streaming workflow by creating and configuring the AWS infrastructure that ingests, transcodes, packages, secures, and delivers video. In AWS’s reference architecture, MediaLive handles ingest and transcoding, MediaPackage packages and originates streams, and CloudFront delivers playback to viewers. CloudFormation coordinates those services as a deployable stack; it does not ingest or encode video itself.
How the AWS live-streaming workflow fits together
The AWS Live Streaming on AWS architecture connects an incoming live feed to viewer playback through several services. Each stage has a distinct job:
- Ingest and transcode with MediaLive. The reference design accepts two feeds for redundancy. MediaLive processes an ingest feed and produces adaptive-bitrate HLS output, so viewers can receive a rendition suited to their connection and device.
- Package with MediaPackage. MediaPackage receives MediaLive’s adaptive-bitrate output and packages it for HLS, DASH, and CMAF playback through custom endpoints.
- Authorize access to the origin. CloudFront uses MediaPackage endpoints as its origin and sends a CDN identifier in a custom HTTP header. The deployment creates this identifier and stores it in Secrets Manager; MediaPackage uses it to authorize playback requests.
- Deliver playback with CloudFront. CloudFront distributes the stream to viewers. The reference solution also creates a demo HTML player in S3; CloudFront restricts access to the player bucket.
CloudFormation provisions these components together as a stack. AWS says the solution’s resources are created from CDK constructs, and its template can be customized.
What the reference CloudFormation deployment creates
AWS’s deployment guide lists a default stack containing a Lambda function, a MediaLive input and channel, a MediaPackage channel, two CloudFront distributions, and an S3 bucket for the preview player. The template is customizable, so treat that list as the documented default rather than a requirement for every adapted deployment.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Documented encoding profiles
The deployment guide specifies progressive encoding profiles at 30 frames per second. They define output resolutions, not a promise that every source or viewer will receive the top resolution.
| Profile | Renditions | Frame rate |
|---|---|---|
| HD-1080p | 1920×1080, 1280×720, 960×540, 768×432, 640×360, 512×288 | 30 fps |
| HD-720p | 1280×720, 960×540, 768×432, 640×360, 512×288 | 30 fps |
| SD-540p | 960×540, 768×432, 640×360, 512×288 | 30 fps |
Choose a profile to match the source, audience devices, and available bandwidth. The guide’s profile list alone does not establish an end-to-end bitrate target, playback latency, or a guaranteed viewer experience.

Deploying the reference solution
- Check prerequisites and regional support. Review the current solution overview at AWS Solution overview, then confirm that the required media services are available in the Region you intend to use. The guide says the solution launches in us-east-1 by default, but the operator must select a Region where the required services are available. MediaLive, MediaPackage, and MediaConnect are available only in specific Regions; check AWS’s current regional service list before deployment.
- Choose the output profile and inspect the template. Decide which documented resolution ladder suits the input and viewers. Customize the CloudFormation template where needed, and account for the resources and permissions your production workflow requires rather than assuming the default demo configuration is production-ready.
- Deploy the stack. Use the solution’s current deployment instructions and select the intended Region. AWS estimates approximately 20 minutes for deployment; this is an approximate solution deployment time, not a guarantee for every account or environment.
- Configure and validate the live input. Connect the source to the provisioned MediaLive input using the workflow’s ingest requirements. Verify both feeds if using the reference’s redundant ingest, then confirm that MediaLive produces the expected adaptive-bitrate output.
- Check packaging, authorization, and playback. Confirm that MediaPackage exposes the intended endpoints, that the CloudFront custom header uses the deployed identifier, and that the identifier is protected in Secrets Manager. Test playback through CloudFront, including the demo player if retained, before directing viewers to the stream.
Choosing between MediaPackage and S3-backed designs
AWS documents a separate CloudFormation architecture that stores MediaLive’s encoded HLS segments in S3 and uses CloudFront with S3 as the origin. Its service list also includes CloudWatch monitoring, IAM permissions, Systems Manager monitoring and cost visualization, and optional AWS Elemental Link hardware for an on-premises video source. See AWS’s S3-backed architecture overview and architecture details.
| Decision area | MediaPackage-origin reference | S3-backed alternative |
|---|---|---|
| Origin or storage stage | MediaPackage ingests adaptive-bitrate output and exposes custom endpoints. | HLS segments are stored in S3, with CloudFront using S3 as origin. |
| Packaging and formats | Documented packaging includes HLS, DASH, and CMAF. | The cited architecture describes stored HLS segments; other output formats are not stated in the cited architecture pages. |
| Delivery | CloudFront delivers playback from MediaPackage endpoints. | CloudFront delivers from S3. |
| Other documented components | The default deployment includes a Lambda function, MediaLive input and channel, MediaPackage channel, two CloudFront distributions, and an S3 preview-player bucket. | The service list includes CloudWatch, IAM, Systems Manager monitoring and cost visualization, and optional Elemental Link hardware. |
Choose based on the origin and storage design your workflow needs, along with ingest protocol and redundancy, transcoding profile, player and format support, latency requirements, authorization, regional availability, and operating cost. The cited architecture pages establish these designs but do not establish a full current Region-by-Region service matrix or current costs. Verify both for your account and target Region before committing.

When Amazon IVS is a better-fit option
Amazon Interactive Video Service (IVS) is a managed interactive live-video option, not simply another name for the MediaLive–MediaPackage reference pipeline. CloudFormation supports the AWS::IVS::Channel resource for a channel and AWS::IVS::StreamKey for a stream key. Creating a channel does not itself create a stream key; declare the separate resource if the stack must provision one. Consult the resource references for AWS::IVS::Channel and AWS::IVS::StreamKey.
Operational checks before going live
- Region: Confirm availability of every required media service in the chosen Region; the default us-east-1 deployment setting does not remove that check.
- Resilience: Decide whether the redundant ingest feeds in the reference design match the source-side failover you need, and test the failure path rather than relying on resource creation alone.
- Security: Protect the CDN identifier stored in Secrets Manager and ensure origin authorization and player-bucket access restrictions remain intact if you customize the template.
- Playback: Test the actual playback endpoints and player on the devices and networks your viewers use. Provisioning a stack is not proof that the source signal, packaging, authorization, and playback chain all work together.
- Cost: Build a service-level estimate for your planned usage and Region. AWS’s cited architecture and deployment pages do not provide a current total operating price.
Or let it run in the cloud
For a different use case—keeping a YouTube channel live around the clock from uploaded videos rather than building an AWS live ingest pipeline—StreamNeo is a separate service. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops uploaded video from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. Every slot streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot, and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. It streams to YouTube only and is not a camera-based ingest service.
