You can replace media without ending a YouTube live stream if you keep the encoder’s connection to YouTube running and change the file or playlist the encoder is playing. YouTube’s documented workflow does not provide an in-session file-swap control: its guidance says to stop sending content from the encoder to end the stream. The change therefore belongs in the playback or playlist layer, and the exact switch depends on how that layer handles files.
What has to stay online
There are two separate parts to the setup: the encoder sends a continuous feed to YouTube, and a player or playlist supplies the video and audio in that feed. To keep the live session online while changing source files, leave the encoder and its YouTube output connection running; change what the player will read instead of ending and recreating the stream.
YouTube’s encoder setup instructions say to enter the Live Control Room server URL and stream key in the encoder. Its guidance also says, “To end the stream, stop sending content from your encoder.” See YouTube Help: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder. That documents the YouTube connection, not a universal way to reload media in an encoder.
Safest way to replace a file on a cloud server
- Confirm the live event and connection. Make sure YouTube Live is enabled for the channel and open the intended stream in Live Control Room. Keep the stream URL and key available securely, and confirm the encoder is connected before changing media.
- Keep the encoder process running. Do not stop it, end the YouTube event, or recreate the ingest connection just to change the video. Make the change in the player, queue, or playlist that feeds the encoder.
- Upload the replacement as a separate file. Use a new filename rather than overwriting the file currently being played. Check that the upload is complete and that the file opens and decodes as expected.
- Validate before scheduling. Confirm the replacement has the intended video and audio, a compatible container and codecs for your playback setup, the expected aspect ratio, and the correct duration. Preview it before relying on an unattended transition.
- Change only a queued item. Replace or reorder the playlist entry when that item is not active. If the current item is playing, let it reach a safe boundary or schedule the replacement for a later pass. A cloud playlist vendor describes replacing queued items without rebuilding an entire program and cautions against changing the file being processed; that is vendor guidance, not a guarantee for every player.
- Watch the transition. Check both the encoder’s logs and YouTube Live Control Room’s preview and stream health. Verify picture, audio, resolution, and the first transition before leaving the stream unattended.
- Keep a known-good fallback. Have a working file or playlist ready in case the replacement is corrupt or the source process fails. Recovery from a source or media error is a separate issue from keeping YouTube’s ingest connection open.
Do not assume that overwriting a file in place will make a running encoder seamlessly load its replacement. A player may already have the old file open or buffered; the behavior depends on the player, playlist implementation, filesystem, and process. The available platform guidance does not establish a universal atomic file-swap procedure.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Playlist or queue
A queue is usually the most manageable arrangement for ongoing changes: the current item can continue while you prepare or reorder a future item. Verify how your particular playlist service applies edits, whether it reloads automatically, and what happens at item boundaries. Test the change while monitoring the live preview.
Custom FFmpeg process
FFmpeg can read an input at real-time pace with -re in documented examples, and its formats documentation describes a FIFO output muxer with options including -attempt_recovery 1 and -recovery_wait_time 1 for attempting recovery after temporary output failures. These are not generic hot-reload or atomic replacement options for a file already open by a process. Check the options against the FFmpeg version you have deployed and test the full transition. See the FFmpeg Formats Documentation.

If a custom wrapper reads a static playlist, prepare an updated playlist and use the reload or switch mechanism provided by that specific player or service at a controlled boundary. The exact command depends on the implementation; there is no universal command established by the platform documentation. Build and monitor queue switching and failure behavior yourself.
Managed cloud input switching
For a more engineered pipeline, Google Cloud Live Stream API offers managed transcoding and channel events that include switching channel input. Its documentation describes RTMP_PUSH and SRT_PUSH input choices; Google recommends SRT where supported and describes packet-drop recovery and forward error correction. This is infrastructure for a managed input-switching workflow, not a ready-made playlist manager. See the Live Stream API overview and Google Cloud Live Stream API best practices.

What to monitor—and what can go wrong
- The stream ends during the change: The encoder may have stopped sending content or disconnected. Keep the process and output session running, and check the encoder log and YouTube Live Control Room before attempting the switch again.
- The old video keeps playing: The player may have opened or buffered the active file. Do not overwrite that file and expect a reload. Schedule the replacement as a separate queued item and switch at a boundary.
- The replacement has no sound or picture: Verify that the upload is complete, the file decodes, expected audio and video tracks are present, and the format works with the playback process. Preview it before putting it into the live queue.
- The transition stalls or the source process exits: Inspect the player and encoder logs, then return to a known-good item or playlist. Output recovery options such as FFmpeg’s FIFO mode address some temporary output failures; they do not guarantee recovery from malformed media or a failed source switch.
- YouTube’s preview does not match the intended feed: Check that the correct encoder, stream URL, key, and source are in use, then confirm the incoming picture and sound in Live Control Room.
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That is an archive behavior, not a maximum permitted stream duration; see Manage live stream settings. Separately, make sure the media and stream comply with YouTube’s applicable copyright and live-stream policies. YouTube’s Gaming and Live Streaming Tools & Services page provides related live-stream guidance.
