Wait for the page content you need—not just a browser navigation event—then capture the full scrollable document. In Playwright, use a locator or assertion as the readiness signal and call page.screenshot({ path: 'page.png', fullPage: true }).

Why navigation finishing is not enough

A navigation event tells you about a browser lifecycle milestone, not necessarily that an application has finished rendering the specific content you want. A page may still be fetching results, updating a component, or loading content in response to scrolling. Playwright distinguishes events such as domcontentloaded and load; for readiness in tests, its documentation recommends assertions rather than treating networkidle as a universal signal. Playwright Page API

Choose a condition tied to the screenshot’s purpose: a heading becomes visible, a result row appears, or an expected value is rendered. Then capture with fullPage: true, which tells Playwright to capture the full scrollable page rather than only the current viewport. Playwright screenshots guide

Capture a full page with Playwright

This Node.js example navigates to a page, waits for a specific piece of content, and writes the full-page screenshot to disk. Replace the URL and locator with values that match the site you are capturing.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  1. Install Playwright: run npm init -y, then npm install playwright and npx playwright install chromium.
  2. Save the script below as screenshot.js.
  3. Run it with node screenshot.js. The image is saved as page.png in the current directory.
const { chromium } = require('playwright');

(async () => {
  const browser = await chromium.launch();
  const page = await browser.newPage();

  try {
    await page.goto('https://example.com', { waitUntil: 'domcontentloaded' });

    // Replace this with a locator that appears when the required content is ready.
    await page.locator('h1').waitFor({ state: 'visible' });

    await page.screenshot({ path: 'page.png', fullPage: true });
  } finally {
    await browser.close();
  }
})();

The example waits for a visible heading as a basic page-specific signal. For an application that fills in results asynchronously, wait for the result element or expected text instead. A locator that appears too early—or matches a generic shell before the desired content arrives—does not prove that all screenshot-relevant content is ready.

Choose a readiness signal that matches the page

Wait for an element

Use a locator for the component that matters, such as a search result row, article body, or loaded chart. For example, replace page.locator('h1') with page.locator('.result-row') if that selector identifies the results you need. If the page can show an empty state, wait for the appropriate results-or-empty-state condition rather than waiting indefinitely for a row that may not exist.

Wait for expected text or an assertion

When a particular label or value indicates completion, assert that it is visible before capturing. A content-specific assertion is usually more meaningful than waiting for a fixed number of milliseconds because it checks the page state rather than elapsed time.

Use navigation events only for what they establish

domcontentloaded and load are useful navigation milestones, but neither says that every application-specific update has finished. A fixed delay may be useful for a known animation or delayed transition, but it can be unnecessarily slow on quick pages and too short on slow ones. Playwright labels networkidle discouraged as a testing readiness check; ongoing analytics or other requests can also make network activity a poor proxy for whether the required content is visible. Make below-the-fold content available before capture

Full-page mode captures the scrollable document, but it does not guarantee that every site’s lazy-loaded images or scroll-triggered components have already been activated. If the page loads content only when it enters the viewport, scroll through the relevant areas before taking the screenshot, then return to the desired position if the capture setup or page behavior requires it. Inspect the resulting image for missing sections and layout shifts; neither Playwright nor Puppeteer promises that arbitrary site scripts or lazy-loading behavior will be complete automatically.

Playwright and Puppeteer waiting options

Need Playwright Puppeteer
Capture the full scrollable page The screenshot API documents fullPage: true. Playwright screenshots guide The screenshot guide documents Page.screenshot(); its cited example does not show a full-page option. Check the screenshot options for the Puppeteer version installed. Puppeteer screenshots guide
Wait for initial navigation Supports lifecycle wait states; use one appropriate to navigation, then separately wait for the content required in the image. Playwright Page API The official screenshot example navigates with waitUntil: 'networkidle2' before calling page.screenshot(). Treat this as an example, not a guarantee of application readiness. Puppeteer screenshots guide
Know when application content is ready Use a locator or assertion tied to the expected page state; the docs discourage networkidle as a testing readiness check. Playwright Page API Use a page-specific signal when content loads asynchronously; the cited guide’s navigation example alone does not establish that every application update has completed. Puppeteer screenshots guide

Common problems and fixes

  • The screenshot contains a loading shell instead of results: the readiness selector is too general or appears before the data arrives. Wait for a result-specific element, text, or state.
  • Images or sections are missing below the fold: the site may load them on scroll. Scroll through the relevant page area before capture, then inspect the output.
  • The capture times out waiting for a locator: confirm the selector against the rendered page and check whether the expected state can legitimately be empty. Wait for an empty-state indicator when appropriate.
  • Content changes after the screenshot starts: wait for the relevant update to finish and check for layout shifts or overlays. A navigation milestone alone cannot rule out later updates.
  • networkidle never arrives or gives the wrong result: persistent requests may prevent an idle state, while idle network activity may still not mean the target component is ready. Prefer a specific locator or assertion.
