PDFShift warns that externally fetched fonts may load intermittently; its documentation recommends local or base64-encoded font data for more consistent results. Then verify your CSS declarations, wait for font readiness when using remote fonts, and handle headers and footers separately.
1. Confirm PDFShift can retrieve the font
PDFShift supports custom font families through the request’s css parameter and a CSS @font-face declaration. If your stylesheet points to a remote font, confirm that the URL is reachable from the conversion environment and serves the intended font file—not an error page, redirect, or unrelated asset.
The timing matters: PDFShift says an external font may not have loaded when conversion begins and describes intermittent results with that approach. Its custom-font guidance points to a locally hosted font URL or base64-encoded font data as more consistent options. A local URL still needs to be accessible to the converter; embedding the font avoids a separate font-file request but increases the CSS or HTML payload.
PDFShift’s example declares the font with @font-face and assigns the family through CSS. Its Node guide says the css parameter accepts either a CSS string or a URL. See PDFShift’s custom-font instructions and its Node guide to loading CSS from a string.

2. Check the family, weight, and style declarations
A font file can load successfully while the PDF still looks wrong if the CSS requests a different family name, weight, or style. Compare the family name declared in @font-face with the one assigned to the document elements, and make sure the supplied file corresponds to the requested weight and style.

}Replace the example URL with a font URL available to PDFShift, or use an appropriate embedded font declaration. Target the elements that need the custom typeface. A blanket rule such as * { font-family: ... !important; } can override deliberate typography elsewhere and obscure which rule is taking effect.

3. Wait for asynchronous font loading
If you must fetch the font externally, PDFShift’s wait_for option can wait for a global function to return a truthy value. The vendor’s example sets a global flag when document.fonts.ready resolves, then has the wait function report that flag. This gives the browser time to finish font loading before conversion proceeds.

}Configure wait_for to poll fontsAreReady using the syntax required by your PDFShift integration. The wait is limited by the remaining conversion timeout, so readiness polling cannot compensate for an unreachable or invalid font URL. Consult PDFShift’s documentation for the current parameter syntax and plan limits: How to wait on an element before continuing the conversion. Its help article lists different timeouts for free and premium accounts; those plan-specific values may change, so check the current documentation rather than relying on an old limit.

4. Treat header and footer fonts as a separate case
PDFShift explains that headers and footers are separate from the main content and cannot make network requests. A font that works in the document body may therefore fail in a PDF header or footer if that region depends on fetching the font remotely.
PDFShift’s prescribed approach is to base64-encode the font and include the encoded font in both the main document and the header/footer. Use the font in the main body as well so it is included in the generated PDF. PDFShift reports successful custom header/footer font tests with TTF and WOFF2; that is a vendor-reported result, not an independent reproduction. See PDFShift’s header and footer font instructions.

5. If the PDF still renders the wrong font
The documented steps address font delivery and readiness, but they do not cover every possible font defect. Use these practical checks to narrow down what remains:
- Inspect the font file and confirm it includes the glyphs the document needs, including any accented characters or non-Latin scripts.
- Verify that the file contains the weight and style your CSS requests; do not assume a regular face will behave like a separate bold or italic face.
- Compare the exact source HTML and CSS sent for conversion with the rendered PDF, including the
cssparameter and any header/footer markup. - Reduce the case to a small document with one font declaration and a few representative characters. If the problem remains reproducible, send PDFShift support that minimal reproduction, the font URL or embedded declaration, and the resulting PDF.
