PDFShift is a hosted API for turning HTML or a URL into a PDF, and invoice generation is one use PDFShift itself advertises. It can handle the rendering step in an invoice workflow; the available product information does not establish it as accounting or invoicing software for calculating taxes, collecting payments, or managing invoice lifecycles. Whether it suits your production invoices depends on how your own templates render and on your data-handling requirements.
What PDFShift does—and what it does not establish
PDFShift accepts raw HTML or a URL and converts that input to PDF. Its FAQ says, “You can use PDFShift for invoice generation for your customers, export images from a graphics editor, and much more.” That makes it a potential rendering component for a system that already creates invoice data and HTML. It does not, on the available evidence, provide the broader functions of an invoicing platform: accounting, tax calculation, payment collection, or invoice lifecycle management.
This distinction matters when evaluating it: the API can render the document your application supplies, but your application remains responsible for producing correct invoice content and deciding what happens before and after a PDF is generated.
HTML input or URL conversion?
Send raw HTML
Raw HTML is useful when an invoice is assembled dynamically, contains private customer data, or is not hosted on a publicly reachable page. PDFShift’s raw-HTML guide says this method avoids a network fetch for the HTML by the service and recommends inlining styles and scripts to reduce additional requests. Those are vendor recommendations, not independently tested guarantees of speed or fidelity.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
For invoices, this can also make the rendering input easier for your application to control: build the page from the invoice data, include the required styles and assets, then submit the HTML. Test the actual fonts and images you intend to use; an invoice preview in your browser does not by itself prove the converted PDF will match.
Send a URL
URL conversion is an option when the invoice page is already available at an address the service can access. Consider whether that page requires a login, session cookie, or other access that the conversion request will not have. If the page is private, raw HTML may be a better fit; PDFShift’s materials say a page does not need to be public when using the raw-HTML approach.
Authentication and integration considerations
PDFShift’s official API example uses a POST request to https://api.pdfshift.io/v3/convert/pdf, an X-API-Key header, and a source field. A PDFShift help article says the service changed from Basic Auth to the X-API-Key header on 2025-05-06; it also warns that missing authentication can result in a watermark. Confirm the current API documentation for the exact request body format and response handling before integrating, since those details can change.

Keep the API key on the server side rather than exposing it in browser code. In an invoice pipeline, handle conversion failures explicitly and do not mark an invoice as successfully delivered merely because a request was started. Verify the response, retain or deliver the resulting PDF according to your own workflow, and make retries safe so that a transient failure does not create duplicate downstream actions.

No hands-on invoice test or independent rendering benchmark is available here, so output fidelity, speed, and reliability for your templates are not established. Test representative documents using the same inputs and settings you expect in production.
- Use invoices with your actual fonts, logos, images, and any externally hosted assets.
- Include long item tables and enough rows to cross page boundaries.
- Check page breaks, repeated table headings if required, margins, and whether important totals or notes are split awkwardly.
- Test taxes, currencies, locales, date formats, and unusually long customer or product names.
- Compare the generated PDF with the intended invoice in every supported browser or rendering path relevant to your application.
- Measure output size and conversion credits with your own typical and largest documents.
PDFShift’s automation information lists options such as margins, headers, and footers, and describes delivery by direct download, URL, cloud storage, or webhook. Confirm which options fit your workflow and the current API behavior in its documentation.

Credits, plans, and cost
PDFShift’s FAQ describes 50 free credits per month and says credits are counted in increments of one per up to 5 MB of generated output. It gives Boost as an example at $24 per month for 2,500 credits, with $0.03 overage per conversion. These are vendor-published figures from the FAQ, not a guarantee of current pricing; check PDFShift’s live plan page before budgeting or purchasing.
Estimate cost using your real PDF sizes and monthly volume, not just the number of invoices. Include larger-than-usual invoices, retries, and any other documents your application may send through the API. Because credit consumption is tied to output size, a template change that substantially increases PDF size can affect usage.

PDFShift states that it does not store requests or generated documents. Its FAQ also explains that using the filename parameter stores results on Amazon S3 and says users can instead deliver documents to their own S3 storage. These are vendor statements; review the current privacy policy, data processing agreement, configuration, and contract before sending invoices containing personal or commercially sensitive information.

ScreenshotNeo for a different part of the workflow
ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server, not an HTML-to-PDF invoice renderer, so it is not a substitute for PDFShift. It may be useful when you need a clean screenshot of an invoice preview page for visual checks or documentation. Its screenshot API can remove cookie banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are not billed. AI agents can use its MCP server to take screenshots.
For example, this cURL request saves a screenshot of an invoice-preview URL as WebP; replace the example URL with your page and use your API key. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
ScreenshotNeo includes 1,000 screenshots per month on its free plan with no card required; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots. Learn about ScreenshotNeo, or sign up free for 1,000 screenshots a month with no card.
Who should consider PDFShift?
PDFShift is worth evaluating if you already generate invoice HTML and need a hosted conversion API, particularly if raw HTML suits your private or dynamically generated pages. It is not established here as a complete invoicing system, and the available evidence does not settle invoice-specific fidelity, production reliability, or legal suitability. Make the decision after testing your own invoice templates, estimating credits from actual output sizes, and reviewing current privacy, contract, and plan details.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can PDFShift convert an invoice page that is not public?
PDFShift’s raw-HTML guide says you can submit HTML without making the page public, since the service does not need to fetch that page.
Does PDFShift calculate invoice taxes or collect payment?
The reviewed product information establishes PDF rendering, not tax calculation, payment collection, or invoice lifecycle management; those responsibilities should remain with your application or other services.
