There is no universal best replacement for PDFShift. DocRaptor is worth evaluating when its documented Prince-based conversion suits your documents; CloudConvert is a candidate when its Chrome-based rendering, selector waits, storage connections, or chained job workflow fit your integration. Test both against representative documents and calculate cost from your own file sizes and request volume before migrating.

Which PDFShift alternative fits your integration?

Provider Documented fit What to verify
DocRaptor Its API documentation describes HTML-to-PDF conversion and identifies Prince as the PDF engine. It also supports spreadsheet document generation. Whether its current API options meet your specific print-layout requirements and how its price compares for your workload.
CloudConvert Its HTML-to-PDF API describes Chrome-based conversion from a URL or HTML, selector waits, synchronous or asynchronous processing, storage connections, and chained jobs. Full operation costs, output behavior on your pages, and which workflow options your integration needs.
PDFShift (baseline) Its materials describe HTML conversion, CSS and JavaScript support, webhooks, and parallel conversion, with some features depending on plan. Whether its current credit, file-size, timeout, and plan terms still suit your use case.

These are documented feature distinctions, not a ranking of output fidelity or speed. No provider’s engine or feature list establishes how it will render your templates.

DocRaptor: evaluate Prince-based conversion

DocRaptor’s API documentation identifies Prince as its PDF engine and describes API-key authentication and document-generation requests. Consider it when that engine meets your layout needs. Confirm any particular advanced print feature in its documentation or with the vendor; a complete feature-by-feature comparison is not established here.

CloudConvert: evaluate the job and storage workflow

CloudConvert describes its HTML-to-PDF API as Chrome-based. Its HTML-to-PDF API page documents URL or HTML input, custom CSS-selector waits, synchronous and asynchronous processing, storage connections including S3, Azure, and Google Cloud, and jobs that chain operations. The page displays a starting price of $0.008 per file; treat that as a displayed starting figure, not a quote for your workload. Use its live calculator and include all relevant operations in your estimate.

When staying with PDFShift may be reasonable

PDFShift’s developer page describes CSS and JavaScript support, webhooks, and parallel conversion, with some features plan-dependent. Its pricing page, checked in 2026, lists 50 free monthly credits, one credit per 5 MB of generated PDF, a 15 MB maximum file size, and a 30-second timeout for the free plan. Its FAQ says a 9 MB output uses two credits and a 14 MB output uses three. These are mutable vendor terms, so check the current plan details before relying on them.

Rendering model and document requirements

Record the rendering engine each provider documents, then test the output with your own CSS, fonts, images, JavaScript, tables, and page-break rules. Engine identity is useful for narrowing candidates, but it does not prove which one will render a specific page better.

Input, authentication, and dynamic content

Check whether your integration submits HTML or a URL, how it supplies access to protected resources, and how it knows asynchronously generated content is ready. Avoid exposing credentials in URLs or logs; validate the provider’s supported authentication and resource-loading approach for your application.

Job execution and delivery

Compare synchronous responses with asynchronous jobs, webhook support, retries, output storage, and multi-step workflows. A provider’s conversion price alone may not capture the cost or operational effort of storage and chained operations.

Limits, billing, privacy, and compliance

Model the actual billing unit alongside file-size limits, timeouts, overages, retries, and expected monthly volume. For sensitive documents, review retention, data location, access controls, compliance evidence, and contract terms with each vendor directly; the available product materials do not establish a comparative compliance winner.

Run a migration test before switching

  1. Build a representative document set. Include a simple invoice, a long multipage report, complex tables and page breaks, custom fonts and images, and a page whose content appears asynchronously.
  2. Submit identical inputs. Use equivalent source HTML or URLs and the same authentication conditions for each candidate. Do not weaken access controls just to make a test pass.
  3. Inspect rendered output. Compare layout, pagination, headers and footers, missing or delayed content, and generated file size.
  4. Exercise operational behavior. Record latency, failures, retry handling, and delivery or storage steps. Repeat under expected peak load; a small test alone cannot establish peak-load behavior.
  5. Estimate total monthly cost. Use actual output sizes and volumes, then account for retries, overages, and any storage or workflow operations. Confirm current rates and limits with each provider.
  6. Check sensitive-data handling. Verify data handling and contractual assurances directly instead of inferring them from marketing descriptions.

This is a practical evaluation method, not a test already conducted across these providers. No independent, comparable performance statistic establishes a speed or reliability winner.

Estimate cost without comparing unlike prices

PDFShift’s published model uses credits based on generated PDF size: its 2026 pricing page lists one credit per 5 MB and 50 free monthly credits, with a 15 MB maximum and 30-second timeout on the free plan. The FAQ’s examples show that files consume multiple credits as size increases. Confirm the live terms before budgeting.

CloudConvert’s HTML-to-PDF page displays $0.008 per file as a starting price. It is not a workload quote; consult the live calculator and include the operations your job needs. The retrieved official materials do not establish a complete, current, like-for-like price comparison for DocRaptor, CloudConvert, and PDFShift. PDFShift’s FAQ also gives a vendor example of a Boost plan at $24 per month for 2,500 monthly credits with $0.03 overage per conversion, and says its average customer uses 1,250 credits monthly. Those are vendor-published figures, not independent market data or a guarantee of current terms.

Consider ScreenshotNeo for screenshot output, not as a PDFShift-equivalent converter

If the integration needs a website screenshot rather than a PDF conversion API, try ScreenshotNeo first: it returns PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF from one GET request, accepts cookie banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture, and bills only clean shots. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, with the result identified in response headers. It also provides an MCP server for AI agents. It is a distinct screenshot API, not a like-for-like substitute for every HTML-to-PDF workflow described above.

One-call screenshot example

For a website capture, call the API with your key and target URL:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for request options. Cookie banners, popups, and chat widgets are removed before the shot; bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are never billed; its MCP server lets AI agents take screenshots. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card, and paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Sign up for free.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a Chrome-based or Prince-based API guarantee better PDF output?

No. The documented engine helps identify a candidate, but output depends on your HTML, CSS, assets, and layout. Compare generated files from your own representative pages.

Can I calculate the exact migration cost from the published starting prices?

Not from those figures alone. Use each vendor’s current terms and calculator where available, and model your file sizes, volume, retries, and workflow or storage operations.
