Choose PDFShift when your main task is converting HTML or a webpage into a PDF; choose Browserless when screenshots or PDFs are one step in a larger browser-automation workflow that may need interaction or session state. Neither is an established speed, quality, reliability, or price winner based on the available vendor documentation. If you want a screenshot-focused API with cleanup before capture and clear billing outcomes, try ScreenshotNeo first.
PDFShift vs Browserless: what each service is for
| Decision | PDFShift | Browserless |
|---|---|---|
| Primary scope | Focused HTML-to-PDF conversion; its FAQ also describes screenshots and Open Graph image generation. PDFShift FAQ | Screenshot and PDF endpoints within a broader browser automation platform that also documents scraping, downloads, rendered content, custom functions, and sessions. Browserless REST API guide |
| Typical workflow | Submit a URL or HTML for conversion. | Use a stateless, single-action REST request, or choose session/function options for multi-step work. |
| Best fit | Generating documents or images from HTML when conversion is the main task. | Rendering as one part of browser interaction, scraping, or automation. |
| Cost comparison | Published usage is based on output-size credits; current limits and plan details should be checked on the live pricing page. PDFShift pricing | Comparable plan pricing is not established here; calculate against current Browserless terms for the workload you need. |
These scopes are not interchangeable in every workflow. A simple conversion API can be enough when the input is ready and the output is the goal. A browser automation platform is more relevant when the process needs clicks, state, or other browser actions. Browserless API overview
How their request and session models differ
PDFShift: submit a URL or HTML
PDFShift documents conversion from a source URL and says raw HTML can be submitted without making a page public. Its FAQ describes support for HTML documents, web pages, Canvas outputs, and frameworks or libraries such as React, Vue, ChartJS, and D3.js. It also lists screenshot and Open Graph image use cases. PDFShift homepage PDFShift FAQ
Browserless REST: one action per request
Browserless describes REST calls as single-action operations: the service launches a browser, performs the task, and closes the session. Cookies and other session state are discarded after the response, so separate REST calls do not preserve a logged-in or otherwise modified browser state. For a multi-step workflow that needs continuity, use the documented session or function options instead. Browserless REST API guide

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
That distinction matters for tasks such as signing in, navigating through several pages, and capturing a later state. Do not assume that a second stateless REST request will inherit the first request’s cookies.
Screenshot and PDF output controls
Screenshots
Browserless documents viewport and full-page screenshots, with options including CSS selectors, clipping, output type, quality, and transparent backgrounds. Its capture guide also describes waiting for images and fonts, which can help avoid capturing a page before visible assets finish loading. Browserless capture guide
For either service, a screenshot is an image of a rendered page. It is not equivalent to a print-rendered PDF with selectable text, and the final appearance depends on what the page has loaded and how it is styled.

Browserless’s PDF endpoint uses Chrome’s print pipeline. The documentation lists controls for paper format, orientation, margins, print backgrounds, page ranges, headers and footers, plus options related to waits for fonts and images. Print stylesheets can affect the result, so a site designed for screen display may not print exactly as it appears in a browser viewport. Browserless capture guide

The Browserless REST /pdf endpoint produces selectable text rather than a screenshot, but it does not create a single continuous page spanning the whole webpage. Browserless points to its function API for that customized format. The documentation also cautions that tagged output is not certified PDF/UA and that accessibility depends on the source markup. What PDFShift’s published credits mean
PDFShift’s pricing page advertises up to 50 free credits each month, one credit per 5 MB of generated data, a 15 MB maximum file size on the free tier, and a 30-second timeout on that tier. Because credits are tied to output size, a document is not necessarily one credit. The FAQ gives a 14 MB PDF as an example that uses three credits. Check the live pricing page and calculator for current terms before estimating spend. PDFShift pricing PDFShift FAQ
The FAQ describes a Boost plan at $24 per month for 2,500 credits, with $0.03 per overage credit. Treat those as PDFShift’s published plan example, not as a verified current quote; plan prices and limits can change. PDFShift FAQ

Which one should you choose?
Choose PDFShift if
- Your main need is converting a URL or HTML into a document or image.
- You want a conversion-focused service rather than a broader browser automation platform.
- Your workload can be estimated in output-size credits, and the current tier’s file-size and timeout limits fit the job.
Choose Browserless if
- Screenshot or PDF creation sits inside a workflow involving scraping, browser control, downloads, or other browser actions.
- You need to decide between stateless REST calls and session/function-based work that can preserve continuity.
- You need documented controls such as full-page screenshots, selectors, print settings, page ranges, or waits for fonts and images.
Try ScreenshotNeo first for screenshot-focused API work
ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. Its focus is clean captures: it accepts cookie or consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each cleanup step can be turned off. It bills only clean shots: bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, with the outcome identified in response headers. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.
For a single screenshot request, the cURL example below saves a WebP image. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for the API options and response details.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
Replace the sample URL with the page you need to capture and set your API key. ScreenshotNeo offers 1,000 screenshots per month free with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Every feature is on every plan. Sign up for ScreenshotNeo free.

What the available evidence does not establish
This comparison is based on official product pages and documentation, not hands-on tests. It does not establish a head-to-head winner for speed, visual fidelity, reliability, or total cost. Those results depend on the pages, output settings, workload, and plan terms being compared.

PDFShift’s homepage publishes company claims of 1.5 seconds average conversion time and 99.99% uptime, without a methodology or year on the reviewed page. Its FAQ separately states 99.9% customer-experienced uptime, also without a year. Frequently Asked Questions
Does Browserless make a full-page PDF that spans the entire webpage on one page?
No. Its REST /pdf endpoint does not create that continuous-page format; Browserless points to its function API for customized output. Browserless PDF API
Does Browserless’s PDF output contain selectable text?
Yes. Browserless says its REST PDF is generated through Chrome’s print engine and contains real, selectable text rather than being a screenshot. That does not mean the output is automatically PDF/UA-certified. Browserless PDF API
