To loop a video on YouTube Live from a Mac, add it to an OBS scene as a Media Source, enable Loop, then connect OBS to a YouTube encoder stream using its server URL and stream key. Start the OBS feed, check the preview and stream health in YouTube Studio, and go live when YouTube prompts you. Test the complete setup before relying on it for a long broadcast.
Before you start
- YouTube channel: YouTube says the channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. First-time live activation can take time, so enable it before your planned broadcast. YouTube’s live-streaming tips and encoder setup guidance explain eligibility and setup.
- OBS and media file: Have OBS installed and a local video or audio file ready. OBS’s Media Source documentation lists common formats including MP4, MOV, MKV, WebM, MP3, AAC, OGG, and WAV; compatibility can depend on the file and installed environment. OBS Media Sources
- Stable upload connection: YouTube recommends keeping 20% upload-bandwidth headroom beyond the total stream bitrate. If you send primary and backup feeds, include both bitrates before adding that headroom. YouTube’s network guidance
A stream key gives OBS permission to send a feed to your YouTube channel. Treat it like a password: do not publish or share it. YouTube says to reset it in Live Control Room if it is exposed, then update OBS with the replacement. Manage your live stream settings
Set up the video loop in OBS on your Mac
- Create or select a scene. In OBS, choose an existing scene or add one in the Scenes panel. The scene is the layout OBS will send to YouTube.
- Add a Media Source. In Sources, select + → Media Source. Give it a recognizable name and select OK.
- Choose the local file. In the Media Source properties, enable Local File if needed, then browse to and select your video or audio file.
- Enable Loop. Turn on the Loop option, then select OK. OBS describes this control as making the file play again when playback completes. OBS Media Sources documentation
- Check the scene. Confirm the video fits the preview and that its audio is present at a sensible level. Play through the end and into the beginning again during your test to verify the transition behaves as expected.
For one local file, Media Source is the direct option. If you need a playlist, OBS’s VLC Video source can play and loop a playlist, but VLC must be installed. OBS Media Sources
Create or select an encoder stream in YouTube Studio
- Open YouTube Studio and choose Create → Go Live.
- In the Live Control Room, open the Stream tab. Create a stream or select an existing stream setup, then review its title, visibility, and other event details.
- Locate the stream’s server URL and stream key. Keep the key private; anyone with access to it may be able to send a feed to your stream. If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and replace the saved key in OBS.

Connect OBS to YouTube and go live
- In OBS, open Settings → Stream. Select YouTube as the service if available, then enter the server URL and stream key from Live Control Room. If OBS presents a different connection workflow, follow the current OBS and YouTube prompts and make sure the intended YouTube account and stream are selected.
- Save the settings. Return to the main OBS window and select Start Streaming.
- Switch to YouTube Live Control Room. Wait for the incoming feed and preview, then review the stream-health indicators and confirm the picture and sound are right.
- Use YouTube’s on-screen control to start the public broadcast when the preview is ready. YouTube’s interface may vary with the stream setup; confirm the event is actually live before sharing its watch page.

Choose resolution, frame rate, and bitrate for the Mac and connection
There is no single best bitrate for every Mac or internet connection. Set OBS output to a resolution and frame rate your Mac can encode reliably, then choose a bitrate that fits that output and leaves YouTube’s recommended 20% upload headroom. Check YouTube’s current encoder and network recommendations rather than assuming that a higher setting will improve a constrained connection.

- Test with representative movement and audio from the actual video; a static image can conceal problems that appear during motion.
- Include all simultaneous upload use in your bandwidth estimate. Other devices or applications sharing the connection can reduce what is available to OBS.
- YouTube recommends RTMPS for an encrypted connection from an encoder. Use the server endpoint YouTube provides for the stream. YouTube encoder settings
- If YouTube reports health problems, reduce the output demand or improve the available upload connection, then test again before going live.
When to use Mac screen capture instead
For a media file stored on your Mac, use Media Source; capturing the screen adds no benefit to the looping workflow. Screen or application capture is useful when the video is playing in another app or you need to broadcast a display or window. OBS’s macOS Screen Capture documentation says audio capture is available on macOS 13 and later; it lists macOS 12.3–12.6 as available without audio. Test and monitor the loop
Run a controlled test first
Use an unlisted or otherwise controlled stream to check the entire path from file playback to YouTube playback. Confirm both picture and sound, watch the loop cross its end and restart, and inspect YouTube’s stream-health messages. Test from the production Mac and network; a test on a different connection does not establish that the live setup will be stable.

Keep an eye on the broadcast
A loop setting repeats the media file; it does not guarantee that OBS, the Mac, or the network will remain available. For a long broadcast, test the full setup for a meaningful period and monitor the feed and stream health. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived when ended; that is an archiving condition, not a promise that a particular stream will run uninterrupted. YouTube encoder setup
Copyright, reused content, and monetization
Only stream video and audio you have the rights to use. A file that plays in a loop is not automatically permitted for live broadcast, and a looping technique does not by itself establish monetization eligibility. YouTube’s monetization policies say monetized content should be original and authentic rather than mass-produced, generic, or repetitive without distinct creative, educational, or other viewer value. Reused-content and copyright issues are separate considerations, so review current YouTube channel monetization policies and do not assume a repetitive stream will qualify.

Troubleshoot common loop-stream problems
