Headless Chrome can render web fonts. When a screenshot shows a fallback font or missing characters, the usual causes are that capture happened before the font loaded, the font request failed, or the runtime lacks a local font with the needed glyphs. Check those causes separately; headless mode alone does not explain the problem.
Identify which font problem you have
First determine whether the page uses a web font downloaded by the browser or a local/system font installed in the operating system. Then check whether all text is affected or only particular scripts or characters. Those distinctions point to different fixes.
- Fallback font or briefly blank text: a web font may still be loading when the screenshot is taken.
- Fallback font that never changes: the font request may have failed, or the intended font may not be available.
- Only certain characters are missing or different: the available fonts may not contain glyphs for those characters.
Check whether capture raced font loading
A page navigation or load event does not guarantee that every external font has loaded successfully or is already visible in the captured frame. Chrome’s headless documentation says command-line capture happens as soon as the page is loaded by default if neither --timeout nor --virtual-time-budget is supplied. Google Fonts explains that Chrome may render the rest of a page while showing blank space where text using a pending web font belongs (Google Fonts technical considerations).
Puppeteer: wait for the document font set
In Puppeteer, wait for document.fonts.ready before capturing. This waits for the document’s font-loading work to settle; it does not prove that the intended font loaded successfully, so inspect font requests and rendered styling as well.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
await page.goto('https://example.com', { waitUntil: 'networkidle0' });
await page.evaluate(() => document.fonts.ready);
await page.screenshot({ path: 'shot.png', fullPage: true });
Use your actual target URL and existing Puppeteer setup. If a font request has failed, waiting longer will not make that request succeed.
Command-line Chrome: bound the capture wait
If using command-line headless capture, use a bounded --timeout or --virtual-time-budget when the page needs additional time. See Chrome’s documentation for the available screenshot options and their behavior: New Headless documentation. A time budget is a timing aid, not a fix for an unavailable font.

- 5-in-1 USB-C Hub: Experience comprehensive connectivity featuring a Power Delivery input, two USB-A 2.0 ports, a USB-A 3.0 port, and an HDMI port. (Note: The USB-C power delivery input port is only for connecting an external wall charger to power your laptop and cannot power peripheral devices.)
- 90W Pass-Through Charging: Achieve optimal charging with 90W pass-through power to your laptop, supported by a total input of 100W, with the hub reserving 10W for operational efficiency. (Note: Wall charger not included.)
- Quick Data Transfers: Accelerate your productivity with rapid data transfers using a high-speed 5Gbps USB 3.0 port and two 480Mbps USB 2.0 ports.
- 4K HDMI Display: Enhance your visual experience with a hub capable of delivering 4K resolution at 30Hz in both mirror and extend modes. Please note that this hub is compatible with MacBook (macOS 12 and newer), Windows 10 and 11, ChromeOS, and laptops equipped with DP Alt Mode and Power Delivery. Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.

Check whether the font request failed
- Reproduce the issue in the same browser runtime, with the same URL, viewport, locale, and environment as the failing screenshot job.
- Inspect the browser’s network results for font requests and check the console for related errors. Confirm the request URL, response, cross-origin configuration, and whether the runtime can reach the font host.
- If the font is self-hosted, confirm the deployed font file exists and the page’s CSS points to the correct asset.
- Inspect the computed or rendered font in that browser session. A
font-familydeclaration only states the requested family; it does not establish that Chrome actually used that face.
These checks help distinguish a failed download from a timing issue. A wait can address delayed loading, but it cannot repair a wrong URL, inaccessible host, or missing deployed asset.
Check Linux fonts and glyph coverage
Headless Chrome running in a slim Linux container may not have a locally installed font that the page requests. It may also lack glyph coverage for particular languages or symbols. Puppeteer’s troubleshooting guide lists Linux dependencies, including fonts-liberation, and gives Docker font-package examples; it notes that Chinese, Japanese, and Korean text may need additional font files (Puppeteer troubleshooting).

- Identify whether the page depends on a local/system font or whether only specific characters are missing.
- Install a package in the runtime image that supplies the required family or script coverage. Package names vary by Linux distribution, so select packages for the target environment rather than copying a package list blindly.
- Refresh the font cache if the distribution requires it, then rerun the capture in the same image.
- Compare the result for the affected characters as well as ordinary Latin text; a font can work for one script and lack another’s glyphs.
Verify the Chrome executable and version
Record the browser version, automation-library version, executable path, and the binary your job launches. This matters for reproducibility: the Chromium project says the old headless functionality stopped being part of the Chrome binary as of M132 and directs users of that mode to chrome-headless-shell (Chromium Headless documentation). That packaging change is a reason to verify which runtime is in use, not evidence that headless Chrome generally drops fonts.
Use a reliable diagnosis instead of adding arbitrary sleeps
- Pin browser and automation versions while diagnosing, and confirm whether the job launches Chrome, Chrome for Testing, or
chrome-headless-shell. - Wait for font readiness, then verify font requests succeeded and the intended face is being rendered.
- Install the required system font and glyph coverage when the page relies on local fonts or missing scripts.
- Compare a screenshot taken after fonts are confirmed ready with the failing screenshot.
- Avoid treating a long fixed sleep as the sole solution: it can mask failed requests and make CI timing unreliable.
Or skip the browser setup
ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. Its API can return a screenshot or PDF with one GET request; its cleanup options accept consent banners and remove known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture. Bot checks, blank pages, failed loads, timeouts, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers indicate the page verdict and billing status. AI agents can use its MCP server tools to take screenshots, get page information, or capture PDFs.
For a direct API capture, create an API key and replace the example target URL if needed. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for options, including controls to turn cleanup steps off.
