A video file’s extension does not tell the whole story. The container packages video, audio, subtitles, and metadata; the codecs encode the audio and video inside it; and decoding turns those encoded streams into playable sound and images. A player needs to handle both the container and the codecs it contains.
What is the difference between a container and a codec?
Think of a video file as a package. The container is the package’s structure: it can hold one or more encoded video and audio streams, along with information such as metadata and subtitles. A codec is the method used to encode and decode a media stream. The container and codecs work together, but they are not interchangeable terms.
A filename extension is a useful clue to the container family, not a full specification of what is inside. Two files ending in .mp4 may contain different video or audio codecs. Conversely, a codec may be carried in more than one container that supports it.
Common container examples
MP4, WebM, Matroska (often using the .mkv extension), MPEG-TS, and Ogg are examples of containers. This is an illustrative list, not an exhaustive compatibility chart: support depends on the specific streams and the player or device.

What happens when a video plays?
Playback involves more than recognizing a filename. The player first reads the container structure, then demuxes it—separating the encoded video, audio, and any other streams or metadata. It decodes the audio and video streams, then synchronizes the resulting sound and images for playback.
- Parse the container: Read its structure and locate the packaged streams and metadata.
- Demux the streams: Separate the encoded video, audio, captions, or other data as needed.
- Decode the media: Convert the encoded audio and video into output the player can use.
- Synchronize playback: Present the decoded sound and images together.
Support at one stage does not guarantee support at every stage. A program may be able to open a container but lack support for a codec or its particular configuration. For web developers, this distinction also matters when using WebCodecs: it handles media encoding and decoding, not container formats, so a workflow still needs container-aware demuxing and muxing.

Why an extension does not guarantee compatibility
Compatibility depends on the actual combination of container, audio and video codecs, and their configurations, as well as the target browser, device, or application. An .mp4 extension alone cannot establish that a particular player will play every stream in the file.
When choosing a format, check the target player or workflow, the codecs and configurations it supports, and whether you need features such as multiple audio tracks, subtitles, or metadata. For web delivery, editing, and general playback, the best choice can differ; there is no universally best format for every purpose.

Remuxing versus re-encoding
If a file will not play, first determine what is actually inside it. The solution may be to use a compatible player, remux the streams into a supported container, or re-encode them into supported codecs. These operations do different things.
Remuxing: change the container
Remuxing repackages encoded streams into a different container without decoding and encoding the media again, provided the destination container accepts those streams. Because the encoded streams are copied, remuxing is not the same as changing the codecs. Not every stream can be copied into every container.

Re-encoding: change the stream representation
Re-encoding decodes and then encodes a stream, typically into a different codec or configuration. It requires processing and can change both file size and quality. Compression can reduce the amount of data, but may sacrifice quality; greater similarity to an uncompressed source generally requires more data. Choose this route when the streams themselves need to change, not merely the container.
How to diagnose a file a player cannot open
- Identify the actual container. Do not assume the extension tells the full story.
- Inspect the video and audio streams. Find out which codecs and configurations the file contains.
- Check the target application’s support. Confirm it can parse the container and decode each stream.
- Choose the least-changing fix. Try a player that supports the file; if only the container is unsuitable, consider remuxing. If a codec or configuration is unsupported, re-encoding may be necessary.
- Do not just rename the extension. Changing a filename does not convert the container or the encoded streams.
Choosing a format for your use
- Start with the destination: Identify the specific browser, device, player, or editing workflow that must open the file.
- Check the streams, not just the extension: Confirm support for the actual video and audio codecs and configurations.
- Account for what the file carries: Multiple audio tracks, captions or subtitles, and metadata may affect the container choice.
- Balance size and quality: Compression can reduce file size, while preserving more similarity to an uncompressed source generally takes more data.
- Use the right conversion: Remux when the streams are suitable but the container needs to change; re-encode when the streams need a different representation.
For pre-recorded YouTube streams
If your reason for preparing a video file is to keep a pre-recorded video running as a YouTube live stream, the container-and-codec distinction still matters: check that the file works with your intended workflow rather than relying on its extension alone. StreamNeo is a cloud service for looping uploaded videos on YouTube; you upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It keeps streaming with your computer off and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. See StreamNeo.
