Set Visibility Behaviour separately: OBS documents the default as stopping playback when the source is hidden and restarting it when shown. If the playlist should keep playing while hidden, choose a continue behavior if your installed OBS version offers one.
Set up a continuously looping video playlist
- Install VLC if needed. The VLC Video Source requires VLC to be installed. If you use 64-bit OBS, OBS specifies that you need 64-bit VLC. See the OBS Project Media Sources guide.
- Add the playlist source. In the scene, add a VLC Video Source, then add the video files to its playlist. This source is intended for playlists; the built-in Media Source is for a single local file.
- Enable playlist looping. In the VLC Video Source properties, turn on Loop Playlist. OBS describes this setting as restarting the source after it runs out of media files. Its documented default is On.
- Choose hidden-source behavior. Set Visibility Behaviour according to what you want to happen when the source is hidden or absent from the active scene. The documented default is Stop when not visible, restart when visible.
- Check both behaviors in preview. Let the playlist reach its final item and confirm it returns to the first. Then hide and show the source to confirm the visibility setting behaves as intended. This is a suggested check before going live.
The OBS setting descriptions cited here are from a page dated January 11, 2022. Labels or behavior may differ in later releases, so use the Properties panel in your installed version and verify the result before a broadcast.
Understand looping and visibility separately
Loop Playlist controls the end of the list
Loop Playlist determines what happens after the VLC playlist runs out of media. It does not decide whether playback advances while the source is hidden.
Visibility Behaviour controls hidden playback
Visibility Behaviour determines whether the playlist continues, pauses, or stops while its source is not visible. With the documented default, playback stops while hidden and restarts when the source becomes visible. The exact position behavior of other options is not guaranteed for every OBS version; check the behavior in your installed build rather than assuming that showing the source resumes at the same point.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Choose based on whether the playlist should advance while hidden and whether you prefer hidden playback to continue, pause, or stop. OBS documents these behavior choices, but does not quantify their resource use.
Check source visibility and stacking
The eye icon in the Sources dock hides or shows a source. A source can be enabled but still not appear in the preview if another source above it covers it. Check the eye icon and the order of sources in the dock when the playlist seems to be missing.

Choose the right source for the media
- Several video files: Use VLC Video Source and its Loop Playlist setting.
- One video file: The built-in Media Source has a separate file-level Loop option and a Restart playback when source becomes active setting, documented as on by default. These controls are distinct from the VLC playlist controls. See the OBS Project Media Sources guide.
- A sequence of still images: Use Image Slide Show, which has its own Loop and Visibility Behaviour settings. OBS lists Loop and Always play even when not visible as defaults for that source type; do not assume video-playlist defaults apply. See the OBS Project Media Sources guide.
Troubleshoot a playlist that stops, restarts, or stays invisible
The playlist ends instead of repeating
Confirm that Loop Playlist is enabled on the VLC Video Source. The single-file Media Source’s Loop checkbox is a different control and does not loop a multi-file VLC playlist.
The playlist starts over when you show the source
This matches the documented default Stop when not visible, restart when visible. Choose a continue or pause behavior if available in your installed version and more suitable for your scene.

VLC Video Source is missing from Add Source
Install VLC and ensure its architecture matches OBS: OBS’s guide specifies 64-bit VLC for 64-bit OBS.
The source is enabled but not visible in preview
Check whether its eye icon is enabled, then inspect the source order. A source higher in the stack can obscure the playlist.

Use Image Slide Show instead of VLC Video Source, and review that source’s own Loop and Visibility Behaviour settings.
