Video streaming works by preparing audio and video for delivery in small pieces, publishing an index that tells a player where those pieces are, and sending them over a network as playback proceeds. The player fetches and buffers media, may switch to a lower- or higher-bitrate version as conditions change, then decodes and plays it. Streaming still transfers data to your device; it simply does not require the entire video to arrive before viewing begins.

What happens when you press play?

  1. The video is prepared. A recorded video or live feed is encoded into compressed audio and video formats, then packaged for a delivery method the service and playback device support.
  2. An index points to the media. The service publishes a playlist or manifest describing the available media pieces and how to request them.
  3. The player requests media. The app or browser reads the index and fetches pieces over the network, commonly using HTTP-based delivery for HLS or MPEG-DASH.
  4. The player buffers and adapts. It keeps some media ready for playback and, when alternate versions are available, can change bit rate or resolution to suit current network conditions.
  5. The device decodes and plays it. The device must support the relevant protocol, container and audio/video codecs. The player turns encoded media into sound and pictures.

These stages are distinct: encoding compresses media, packaging organizes it for delivery, hosting and distribution make it reachable, and the player requests and decodes it. Apple describes HLS as HTTP delivery that can use web servers and CDNs, with alternate bit rates and adaptation to available connection speed (Apple’s HLS overview; basic HLS deployment).

How video is encoded and packaged

Encoding compresses the source so it can be stored and transmitted more efficiently. A codec defines how the video or audio is encoded and decoded. Packaging organizes those encoded tracks into a form a player can access. Services do not all use the same codecs or containers, so a stream that works in one player is not automatically compatible with every device.

Apple’s basic HLS deployment documentation describes fragmented MPEG-4 media containing HEVC or H.264 video and AAC or AC-3 audio as one HLS option. That is an example, not a universal recipe for every streaming service or HLS stream (Apple’s deployment guidance).

Why are streams divided into segments?

Rather than require one complete file to be transferred before playback, HTTP adaptive streaming organizes media into segments. A playlist or manifest acts as an index, identifying the media and its order. The player uses that information to request the pieces it needs as playback advances.

HLS uses playlists and media segments. MPEG-DASH uses an MPD, or Media Presentation Description, and media segments. Apple’s CMAF documentation describes encoded tracks, fragments and switching sets that can offer alternate bit rates and resolutions. Google’s DASH instructions describe an MPD plus initialization and media segments for YouTube live ingestion; those are YouTube-specific ingestion rules, not requirements for every DASH service (Apple’s CMAF overview; Google’s YouTube DASH guidance).

How the network delivers the video

A server or content delivery network (CDN) hosts media and makes it available to viewers. HTTP-based streaming can use ordinary web delivery and caching infrastructure, which helps distribute requested media across a network. A CDN is part of delivery; its presence alone does not guarantee uninterrupted playback. Performance also depends on the connection, the player, and how the stream is prepared and served.

What is adaptive bitrate streaming?

When a stream is available in multiple representations, those versions can provide the same content at different bit rates or resolutions. A capable player can switch between them as network conditions change. A lower-bitrate version needs less throughput but may have lower picture quality; a higher-bitrate version carries more data and needs more available throughput. Apple documents HLS adaptation to connection speed, while its CMAF material describes switching among alternate tracks at fragment boundaries (HLS overview; CMAF overview).

Buffering gives the player some media to draw on when delivery varies. It can help smooth short fluctuations, but it cannot eliminate a sustained shortfall in throughput or every interruption. There is no single buffer size or guaranteed outcome that applies to all services and implementations.

What is the difference between live streaming and video on demand?

For video on demand (VOD), the recording already exists when someone presses play. Its media can be encoded, packaged and hosted ahead of time. In live streaming, an encoder processes an ongoing audio-video feed and new segments become available as the event proceeds; the player follows those newly published pieces.

Live latency is affected by choices across capture, encoding, segmentation, delivery and playback. It is not determined by one component alone. In its YouTube-specific ingestion comparison, Google lists RTMP and RTMPS as options for normal, low or ultra-low latency, while describing segment-based HLS and DASH as having greater latency and not being suitable for ultra-low latency. This compares creator-to-YouTube ingestion protocols; it is not a universal ranking of how quickly every protocol delivers video from a platform to its viewers (Google’s YouTube ingestion comparison, last updated June 1, 2026).

Platforms may also process an incoming live feed before distributing it. Google says YouTube transcodes and rechunks incoming media in its DASH ingestion workflow; that illustrates platform processing, rather than a rule for all services (Google’s YouTube DASH guidance, last updated September 14, 2026).

HLS and MPEG-DASH compared

Aspect HLS MPEG-DASH
Index Playlist MPD (Media Presentation Description)
Media organization Segmented media; HLS documentation describes alternate streams and adaptation. Segments addressed through a DASH MPD; CMAF describes a segmented-media model usable with HLS and DASH.
Delivery HTTP; web servers and CDNs can be used. HTTP-based; Google’s YouTube guide describes DASH delivery over HTTP/HTTPS.
What to check Target-device and service support, plus authoring requirements. Target-device and service support, plus manifest and codec requirements.

This is a conceptual comparison, not a claim that one approach is universally better. Compatibility and latency depend on the implementation, device support, packaging and service configuration (Apple on HLS; Apple on CMAF; Google on YouTube DASH).

Why does streaming buffer or fail to play?

Streaming depends on each stage working together. These checks distinguish common causes without assuming that a particular symptom has only one explanation.

  • Playback pauses or quality drops: the connection may not sustain the data rate of the selected representation, or delivery may vary. If the player supports adaptation and alternate versions exist, it may move to a lower-bitrate option; this can reduce quality.
  • The stream will not play on a device: check that the player supports the delivery protocol and that the device supports the media container and codecs actually used. Protocol support alone does not establish codec compatibility.
  • Live playback feels delayed: latency can accrue at multiple points from capture through playback. Check the service’s supported ingest method and latency options; YouTube’s protocol comparison applies to ingestion into YouTube, not every viewer-delivery setup.
  • A stream stops despite using a CDN: a CDN distributes hosted media but does not guarantee uninterrupted playback. Check the source, network path, player, and service configuration rather than treating the CDN as a guarantee.

Keep a prerecorded YouTube stream running continuously

For creators who want uploaded recordings or a playlist to keep a YouTube channel live, StreamNeo runs the stream from the cloud rather than relying on a computer at home. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add the YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops the uploaded video; it does not broadcast a camera feed.

Or let it run in the cloud

  • Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on.
  • Each slot streams the uploaded quality, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers.
  • StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
  • The first day is free with no card required; one free day is available per account.
  • Monthly: $9.99 per month.

See StreamNeo for details, or start your free day.

How to think about streaming as a whole

Streaming is a pipeline: media is encoded and packaged, indexed as segments, hosted and distributed, then requested, buffered, adapted when possible, decoded and played. When a problem occurs, identifying which stage is involved is more useful than treating “the stream” as one indivisible technology.
