RTMP and RTSP serve different roles. RTMP commonly sends an encoder’s live feed to a streaming server over a persistent TCP connection. RTSP sets up and controls a media session; the audio and video are commonly carried separately using RTP. For a typical encoder-to-platform workflow, RTMP is often the match. For an IP camera feed, RTSP with RTP is often the match—if both the camera and receiving server support the required codecs and transport.

RTMP vs. RTSP at a glance

Question RTMP RTSP with RTP
Common role Contribution or ingest: an encoder sends a live feed to a server. Session setup and control, commonly for IP-camera or media-server sessions.
How media is carried Commonly carried over RTMP on a persistent TCP connection. Commonly carried separately using RTP; RTSP controls the session.
Typical source Software or hardware encoder, when the destination accepts RTMP. IP camera that exposes an RTSP stream, when the receiver accepts RTSP/RTP.
What viewers receive A server may convert or package either input for viewer delivery, such as HLS, MPEG-DASH, or WebRTC. Ingest and playback protocols need not be the same.

These are common workflow patterns, not universal requirements. Compatibility depends on both endpoints, codecs, network rules, and implementation. See the RTSP 1.0 specification, RFC 2326, the RTSP 2.0 specification, RFC 7826, and ONVIF streaming specifications.

What RTMP does

RTMP is commonly used to contribute a live production feed from an encoder to a streaming server or service. In this arrangement, the encoder sends the media over a persistent TCP connection. If a platform provides an RTMP ingest address and stream key, an RTMP-capable encoder is the natural source-side match. The platform’s current ingest instructions take precedence, and RTMPS is preferable for contribution over an untrusted network when supported.

RTMP is not, by itself, a promise that a browser or every viewer device can play the feed directly. A media server may ingest RTMP and deliver the stream in a separate format suited to its viewers.

What RTSP does—and whether it carries video

RTSP is primarily a session setup and control protocol; it does not typically carry the continuous media itself. The IETF’s April 1998 RFC 2326 says of RTSP: “It does not typically deliver the continuous media.” In a common RTSP/RTP arrangement, RTSP establishes or controls the session while RTP carries time-based audio or video.

The standards allow transport choices and real deployments vary. RTP may use UDP or be interleaved over TCP, depending on the implementation and negotiation. So “RTSP stream” is common shorthand for a camera or media session, but it does not mean RTSP and RTP are the same protocol.

Which should you use?

Choose RTMP for an encoder sending to a platform

Use RTMP when your software or hardware encoder is sending a contribution feed to a destination that supplies an RTMP ingest URL and stream key. Follow that destination’s current requirements for protocol, codecs, and stream settings; prefer RTMPS when available for an internet contribution path.

Choose RTSP/RTP for a supported IP camera feed

Use RTSP/RTP when a camera exposes an RTSP stream and your receiving server accepts that camera’s session and media format. Before configuring it, check the exact camera model’s documentation for URL syntax, authentication, video and audio codecs, RTSP version, and RTP transport options. A device label saying “RTSP” alone does not guarantee interoperability.

Choose viewer delivery separately

If the goal is playback in a web, mobile, or OTT app, decide how the server will deliver video to those viewers independently of how it ingests the source. A server may accept RTMP or RTSP/RTP and output HLS, MPEG-DASH, or WebRTC, subject to the server and client capabilities. Wowza describes these output options in its streaming documentation.

Ports, firewalls, and security

Port numbers are configuration defaults, not protocol-wide requirements. Wowza’s technical specifications list TCP 1935 as its RTMP default and TCP 554 as its RTSP default. Your server, camera, or network may use different settings.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
  • RTMP: Confirm that the destination’s configured port is reachable. Use RTMPS/TLS for contribution when both ends support it.
  • RTSP/RTP: Consider the control connection and media transport separately. RTP over UDP can require media ports to pass through firewalls or NAT. If UDP is blocked, interleaved RTP over TCP may work, but the camera and receiver must both support it.
  • Encryption: Check protection for both control and media. Wowza distinguishes RTMPS for RTMP over TLS, RTSPS for protecting RTSP control, and SRTP for protecting RTP media. RTSPS alone does not encrypt RTP media.
  • Access: Check authentication and avoid exposing camera streams or credentials unnecessarily to public networks.

RTSP versions: 1.0 and 2.0 are not automatically interchangeable

RFC 2326 specifies RTSP 1.0 and was published in April 1998. RFC 7826 specifies RTSP 2.0, was published in December 2016, and obsoletes RFC 2326. RFC 7826 also says RTSP 2.0 is not generally backwards-compatible with RTSP 1.0 beyond basic version negotiation. Many camera products and software guides still describe RTSP 1.0-era behavior, so verify the version and supported profiles with the camera and server manufacturers when interoperability matters.

How to troubleshoot a connection

  • The camera URL is rejected: Confirm the exact model-specific path, capitalization, port, and any required credentials in the manufacturer’s documentation. Camera vendors may use proprietary URL syntax.
  • The RTSP session connects but there is no picture or sound: Check whether the receiver supports the camera’s codecs and media configuration; successful session control does not by itself establish that the media format can be decoded.
  • A local camera feed fails across a firewall or NAT: Check the negotiated RTP transport and required ports. If UDP media is blocked, try interleaved RTP over TCP only if both endpoints support it.
  • An RTMP encoder cannot connect: Verify the ingest address, stream key, destination protocol, configured port, and whether the service expects RTMPS rather than RTMP. Use the endpoint’s current settings rather than assuming a port or URL.
  • Viewers cannot play a stream that the server receives: Check the server’s configured output protocol and the viewer’s support. Ingest success does not establish browser or app playback compatibility.
