They often preserve the full picture and do not, by themselves, mean anything is broken. Whether to remove them depends on where they come from and whether you are willing to crop or distort the image.
What aspect ratio means
Aspect ratio is a picture’s width compared with its height. A 16:9 frame is wider than a 4:3 frame. YouTube’s standard aspect ratio for computer playback is 16:9, and its player can adapt to videos with other ratios rather than requiring every video to have the same shape (YouTube Help).
If a video is scaled to fit a differently shaped display while keeping its proportions, unused space can remain. Bars above and below the picture are commonly called letterboxing; bars at the left and right are commonly called pillarboxing. Some technical references use “letterbox” more broadly for fitting an image inside a display area.
For some older or broadcast formats, pixel shape matters as well as frame dimensions. Pixel aspect ratio (PAR) describes the shape of an individual pixel; display aspect ratio (DAR) describes the shape of the displayed picture. Microsoft gives the relationship as DAR = (image width in pixels / image height in pixels) × PAR. For most everyday troubleshooting, start by comparing the video frame’s shape with the screen’s shape.

Find out where the bars are coming from
- Note their position. Bars at the top and bottom usually indicate a video wider than the display; bars at the sides usually indicate a narrower video, such as 4:3 footage on a widescreen display. Bars on all four sides can point to a smaller picture placed within a larger frame.
- Check the original video file. Open it in another player or inspect it in your editing software. If the bars remain, they may be encoded into the video itself. Vimeo says its player does not automatically remove hard-coded bars (Vimeo Help Center).
- Compare the page or player with the source. If the bars appear only on a hosting page, embed, or particular player, they may be surrounding space in that layout rather than part of the video. Vimeo notes that its clip-page design can create apparent black space at the sides.
- If watching on a TV, check the source device too. Aspect-ratio behavior can depend on the content, TV, set-top box, and connected device. If the problem happens on just one input, check that device’s picture or output settings before assuming the TV is faulty. Menu names and available modes vary by TV model (Sony Support).
Why the bars may be intentional
Wide movie on a 16:9 screen
A film framed wider than 16:9 can show bars above and below when displayed on a 16:9 TV. The bars preserve the full composition. Removing them usually requires enlarging and cropping the picture, which cuts off some of the frame.
4:3 video on a widescreen display
Side bars can preserve the full image from older 4:3 footage. Filling a 16:9 screen without bars means cropping the top and bottom or stretching the picture wider than its original proportions.

Bars added during editing or export
A creator may have added bars to a video before uploading it. YouTube recommends not adding padding or black bars directly to the video because its player adapts to different aspect ratios. If you are preparing an upload, set the project to the intended frame shape and avoid baking in bars just to fit a particular player (YouTube Help).
Choose how to fill the screen
There is no way to remove bars from every mismatch while also preserving every pixel and the original proportions. Choose the trade-off that suits the video:

| Option | What happens | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Fit or scale proportionally | The complete image stays visible. | Bars or other unused space may remain. |
| Crop, zoom, or pan-and-scan | The picture fills more of the display. | Some of the image is cut off; the visible area may shift. |
| Stretch | The picture fills the display area. | People and objects can look unnaturally wide or tall. |
These are the basic choices described in Microsoft’s aspect-ratio guidance; Adobe also describes letterboxing and pan-and-scan, and Sony warns that TV zoom or wide modes can cut off or distort the original image (Microsoft Learn; Adobe Help; Sony Support).
Remove bars from a video you are editing
If the bars are embedded in your source, use video editing software to crop or reformat the video. In Microsoft Clipchamp, change the project aspect ratio using the ratio control, then use the clip’s fit or fill controls as appropriate. “Fit” preserves the full clip but can leave space; “fill” fills the project frame by cropping where necessary. Review each clip after changing the project ratio because the crop can affect different shots differently (Microsoft Support).

- Choose the project’s intended aspect ratio before exporting.
- For each clip, choose fit if the whole frame matters or fill if filling the frame matters more.
- Check the edges of the picture for cropped faces, text, or other important details.
- Preview the exported video in the target player before uploading. Avoid adding black padding simply to force a particular shape.
Exact controls and presets can vary by editor and version. Cropping cannot recover picture information outside the source frame.

- Bars on a movie, but other programs fill the TV: the movie may use a wider aspect ratio. Keep the bars to see the full image, or use zoom knowing that it will crop the frame.
- Bars at the sides of old footage: the source may be 4:3. Side bars preserve its original proportions; cropping or stretching changes the image.
- Bars remain in every player: they may be baked into the file. Re-edit or crop the video if you own the footage and accept the loss of picture area.
- Bars appear only on a clip page: compare the source file with an embed or another player before editing. Page design or player sizing may create the surrounding space.
- A TV picture is cut off after changing its display mode: undo zoom or wide mode and restore a setting that preserves the full frame. TV modes and labels differ by model.
- The issue occurs only through a set-top box or console: inspect that device’s output or aspect-ratio settings as well as the TV’s input settings.
Keeping a YouTube video live 24/7
If your question is about black bars in a pre-recorded video you plan to stream continuously, fix the framing in the source or accept the bars before starting. A streaming service does not change the underlying aspect-ratio trade-off: fitting preserves the full image, while cropping or stretching alters it. StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping an uploaded video or playlist live on YouTube; upload the video, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops the uploaded content, not a camera feed.
