These services can use separate SSL configurations, so changing one certificate setting may not fix another.
1. Identify which Wowza connection is failing
Before editing a certificate or restarting a service, record the exact URL, hostname, port, client error, and relevant Wowza log message. The endpoint determines where to look:
- Streaming Engine host port: SSL settings for host ports are in the
<SSLConfig>section ofVHost.xml. - Manager HTTPS: Manager uses SSL parameters in
manager/conf/tomcat.properties. Wowza’s Manager instructions call for restarting Wowza Streaming Engine Manager after changing these settings. - REST API: Its SSL configuration is separate, in
Server.xml. - WebRTC: Check that the browser is using a secure WebSocket (
wss://) and that the relevant Wowza host port has an SSL configuration.
Wowza documents these as distinct configuration areas in its SSL configuration guidance. Do not assume that one port or certificate setting controls every endpoint; actual ports depend on the deployment.
2. Match the error to a likely cause
Error text narrows the search, but it does not prove the cause. Confirm it against the endpoint configuration, certificate, and server logs.

3. Fix “Could not load keystore”
Check the file Wowza is configured to load rather than relying on its filename extension. A .p12 or .pfx file is not automatically a JKS keystore. Wowza’s VHost reference lists JKS as the default keystore type; if your file is PKCS12, confirm the format and use a configuration or conversion method supported by your installed version.

- Back up the keystore and the relevant configuration file.
- Open the configuration for the failing endpoint:
VHost.xmlfor a host port,Server.xmlfor REST API SSL, ormanager/conf/tomcat.propertiesfor Manager HTTPS. - Check that the configured keystore path points to the intended file and that the Wowza service can read it.
- Verify the password and configured keystore type against the actual keystore. Correct either the configuration or the file using a method supported for your Wowza version.
- For StreamLock, also check that the domain entered in the keystore path is correct.
- Restart the affected component as required by its configuration, then check the logs for the original load error.
Wowza’s common SSL certificate configuration errors guidance also identifies an incorrect password and an incorrectly entered StreamLock certificate domain as possible causes.
4. Fix a browser trust warning
For “Not Secure” or ERR_CERT_AUTHORITY_INVALID, inspect the certificate actually presented by the hostname the client requested. Check that its identity covers that hostname and that the client can build a trusted chain, including any required intermediate certificates. A self-signed certificate or an incomplete chain can cause a trust warning.

Wowza documents procedures for self-signed, CA-issued, imported, and StreamLock certificates. Choose according to who must trust the connection, domain coverage, renewal process, keystore compatibility, and who controls issuance and private keys. Self-signed certificates are suitable only where the clients’ trust arrangements permit them; external clients generally need a certificate they trust.
Wowza Support warns that an expired StreamLock certificate cannot be renewed; its article advises creating a new certificate and adjusting playback links that use the old certificate. Check the current account and service procedure before making that change.

5. Check HTTPS/WSS port binding and reachability
A valid certificate cannot help if the service is not listening on the expected port or the client cannot reach it.
- Confirm the affected service is bound to the intended TLS/HTTPS port and that another process is not already using it.
- Check firewall and network rules between the client and server. Wowza Support specifically advises making sure the port in use is open to the firewall.
- For Manager HTTPS, use a port different from Manager’s HTTP port,
8080, and verify that the chosen port is available and reachable. - For WebRTC, use
wss://and ensure the Wowza host port has an SSL configuration. A page delivered over HTTPS cannot use an insecurews://connection in modern browser contexts.
Port assignments can differ by installation; distinguish the secure host port from Manager HTTPS and REST API ports rather than assuming they share a number. See Wowza’s SSL certificate configuration troubleshooting.

6. Investigate TLS protocol or cipher negotiation
If the certificate loads but the TLS handshake fails, investigate what protocol and cipher the client and server can negotiate. Wowza’s SSL configuration guide describes sslLogProtocolInfo and sslLogConnectionInfo for collecting protocol and cipher information.
The guide notes that Wowza Streaming Engine versions 4.8.18 and later include Java 11 or Java 21, which provide TLS 1.3 support; older versions may need a Java 11 runtime for TLS 1.3. Confirm the deployed Engine and Java versions before changing protocol filters. Wowza also provides instructions for enabling specific TLS versions. Apply the narrowest protocol configuration that meets client-compatibility and security requirements, then retest affected clients.
7. Validate the change on the failing client
- Restart the service component required by the setting you changed. For Manager HTTPS changes, Wowza specifies restarting Wowza Streaming Engine Manager.
- From the affected client, test the exact hostname, port, and path that failed—not merely a different URL on the same server.
- Inspect the certificate details in the browser and confirm that the presented identity and trust chain are correct.
- For WebRTC, use the browser’s network tools to check whether the secure WebSocket handshake succeeds.
- Review Wowza logs for the original error and any new keystore, binding, or handshake messages.
A configuration change is not verified until the target client can connect successfully and the relevant logs no longer show the failure.
