To set up an RTMP live stream, create or open a broadcast in your streaming platform, copy its current ingest server URL and private stream key, enter both in an encoder such as OBS Studio, configure output settings for the platform and your connection, then test the complete setup before going live. For YouTube, choose RTMPS when available: it is YouTube’s secure extension of RTMP.

What you need for an RTMP stream

RTMP is the connection method that sends audio and video from an encoder to a streaming platform. It is one part of a working broadcast: you also need a destination broadcast or channel, valid credentials, configured input sources, suitable output settings, and enough upload capacity.

  • A destination: choose a platform such as YouTube or Twitch and prepare a live broadcast using its current dashboard workflow.
  • An encoder: OBS Studio is one option. It captures your selected sources, encodes them, and sends the stream to the destination.
  • The ingest URL and stream key: the URL identifies where to send the feed; the key authorizes it and associates it with your account or broadcast. The destination provides these values. They are not universal across platforms or events. Twitch’s stream-key FAQ describes the key as an authorization credential.
  • A stable upload connection: the encoder’s output must fit both the destination’s current limits and your available upload capacity.

A webcam or capture card is optional. You can stream a screen, game, or other source without either one.

Set up the destination and protect your stream key

  1. Sign in to your streaming platform and create or select the live broadcast using its current live workflow.
  2. Open the platform’s encoder or stream setup details and copy the ingest server URL and stream key. If the platform offers multiple endpoints or protocols, use the one recommended for your encoder and broadcast.
  3. Keep the key private. Do not display it in a stream, screenshot, or public post. If it is exposed, reset or regenerate it in the platform dashboard and update the encoder with the replacement.

Use the destination’s current setup screen rather than a URL found in an old tutorial. The server address, protocol, and credentials must match the platform and broadcast you intend to use.

Configure OBS Studio to send the stream

Choose a platform preset or enter a custom server

  1. Open OBS Studio and go to Settings > Stream.
  2. For a listed destination, select it from the Service menu. Use this route when you want OBS’s built-in platform option.
  3. If the platform gives you a different ingest endpoint or is not listed, choose the custom-server option, then enter the server URL and stream key from the destination’s current setup screen.
  4. Check that you have selected the intended protocol and that the URL and key belong together. OBS documents the service, server, and key fields in its Studio Overview Guide.

Use RTMPS for YouTube when supported

YouTube recommends RTMPS, the secure extension of RTMP. Select the RTMPS endpoint provided in YouTube’s setup details when your encoder supports it. Do not assume that another platform uses the same endpoint, port, or protocol. YouTube’s setup guidance explains its RTMPS option.

If a YouTube connection fails with an SSL error or timeout, verify the server name, port, protocol, and SSL configuration. A cleartext RTMP connection attempted against an RTMPS endpoint, or the reverse, can prevent connection. Google’s RTMPS ingestion guide covers these connection issues.

Add sources and check audio

  1. In the OBS scene you intend to use, select Sources and add the inputs you need, such as a display capture, window capture, game capture, media source, webcam, or capture device.
  2. For a microphone or desktop audio, choose the intended device in the audio settings or add the appropriate audio source.
  3. Watch the audio meters while speaking or playing sound. Confirm that the expected meters move and that muted sources are not the only inputs you need.
  4. Check the preview for the right scene, crop, and framing before sending it to the platform.

OBS’s Quick Start Guide covers adding sources and checking meters; its Sources Guide describes the available source types. For external HDMI video, confirm that your capture device is supported on your operating system and select the correct device, resolution, and frame rate. See OBS’s Video Capture Sources guide.

Set output settings for the destination and your connection

There is no single bitrate or resolution that suits every platform, network, encoder, and scene. Follow the destination’s current encoder recommendations, then choose settings your computer can encode and your upload connection can sustain. Resolution, frame rate, codec, video bitrate, audio bitrate, and encoder choice interact; raising output demands can increase network and hardware load.

  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
  1. Open Settings > Output in OBS and configure the streaming encoder and bitrate according to the destination’s current guidance.
  2. Open Settings > Video and choose an output resolution and frame rate that fit the platform’s requirements and your available encoding capacity.
  3. Confirm the selected audio device and audio output settings. Check the destination’s current recommendations for codec and audio requirements as well as video.
  4. Compare the chosen bitrate with your actual upload capacity, leaving enough room for normal variation in the connection. A fast download speed alone does not establish that your upload can carry the stream reliably.
  5. If you are unsure how your computer will handle the scene and output, use OBS’s Auto-Configuration Wizard as a starting point, then test the result.

OBS notes that bitrate depends on upload speed and destination constraints in its Studio Overview Guide. For YouTube-specific values, consult its current recommended encoder settings rather than treating an example bitrate from another service or tutorial as universal.

Run a test before the public broadcast

  1. Start a short test stream or recording before your first public broadcast.
  2. Check the platform’s preview or connection status to confirm it is receiving the stream.
  3. Verify the picture, framing, and audio at the destination—not only in the OBS preview.
  4. Watch OBS for dropped-frame or encoder warnings, and check for audio that is too quiet, missing, or coming from the wrong device.
  5. Fix problems and repeat the test before relying on the setup for a live event.

OBS’s Quick Start Guide encourages testing for a few minutes before a first stream or recording. A successful local preview alone does not confirm that the platform is receiving the feed correctly.

Troubleshoot common RTMP setup problems

No platform preview or failed connection

  • Confirm that the destination is expecting the stream and that the selected broadcast is the one you prepared.
  • Check for a typo or mismatch between the server URL and stream key. If the key was reset or exposed, copy the current key from the dashboard and replace it in OBS.
  • Verify that the endpoint uses the expected protocol and port. For YouTube RTMPS, check the server name, port, and SSL configuration as described in Google’s ingestion guide.

Video works but audio does not

  • Check which microphone and desktop audio devices OBS is using.
  • Look for movement in the relevant audio meters while producing sound, and verify that the sources are not muted.
  • Listen to the platform preview or test recording to confirm audio reaches the destination.

Stuttering, overload, or dropped frames

  • Determine whether the issue is network-related or caused by encoder/computer load; the symptoms can look similar but need different fixes.
  • If the encoder or computer is overloaded, reduce output demands such as resolution or frame rate, or simplify a demanding scene. OBS notes that CPU demand depends on encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity; minimum system requirements do not guarantee streaming performance. See OBS system requirements.
  • If the upload connection cannot sustain the selected bitrate, lower the bitrate or choose less demanding output settings, then test again.
  • Run OBS’s Auto-Configuration Wizard as a starting point if you need help balancing settings.

Webcam or capture-device video is missing

  • Confirm OBS has the required device access and that the correct device is selected.
  • Check that the device supports the operating-system path and the resolution and frame rate selected in its source settings.
  • Consult OBS’s Video Capture Sources guide for device setup details.

Or let it run in the cloud

The steps above are for an encoder running on your computer. If your goal is to keep uploaded videos playing as a 24/7 YouTube stream, rather than send a live camera or desktop feed, StreamNeo runs the stream from the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing at home has to stay on. Your video streams as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot regardless of quality; if YouTube drops the stream, StreamNeo automatically tries to recover it. The first day is free with no card. Monthly access is $9.99 per month. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
