To add closed captions to a live stream, choose a caption source—platform-generated speech recognition (ASR), a separate caption feed, or a human CART captioner—and confirm that the stream platform and viewer player support the same delivery method. Then test the complete path from microphone to viewer, including timing, language, simulcast destinations, and any archive. A caption option being enabled does not establish that captions will reach every viewer or meet every accessibility obligation.

What live closed captions do—and what they do not

Captions present meaningful audio as synchronized text. Accessibility guidance includes identifying speakers and conveying significant sounds, not only transcribing spoken words. Closed captions can be switched on or off in a compatible player; open captions are burned into the picture and remain visible.

W3C WCAG 2.1 Success Criterion 1.2.4 states: “Captions are provided for all live audio content in synchronized media.” Whether a particular event has a legal requirement depends on its circumstances, including event type, geography, and distribution. A platform feature by itself does not prove compliance.

Choose a captioning workflow

Approach Useful when Check before choosing
Platform-native automatic captions The platform supports the event’s language and latency, and automated transcription suits the use case. Availability for the account and stream format, supported language, latency mode, duration allowance, conditions that affect recognition, archive behavior, and whether captions reach each destination.
Third-party caption feed or delivery software A captioner or speech-to-text source must send captions into the platform through a supported ingest route. Ingest protocol, caption format, feed and track limits, synchronization, signed URL handling, supported software, and an end-to-end viewer test.
Human CART A trained human captioner is required or preferred, or the platform supports an external captioner workflow. Captioner availability, event vocabulary and preparation, integration, latency, geography, cost, backup plan, and in-player display.
Cloud stream-processing captions You control an HLS or DASH pipeline and want captions or translated captions generated in its output. Supported location and language, output format, synchronization, end-to-end latency, pipeline complexity, and downstream player support.

These options are different workflows, not interchangeable quality levels. ASR is software-generated; CART is produced by a human captioner listening and rendering speech, often using stenography or a phonetic keyboard. Neither workflow has unlimited opportunity to correct text before viewers see it. The platform documentation cited here does not establish a comparable, independently measured accuracy benchmark across services, so do not assume a universal accuracy rate.

Platform-native automatic captions

Native ASR avoids a separate captioner-to-platform feed, but only works when the platform supports the stream, language, account, and latency combination. For example, YouTube documents live automatic captions as English-only, subject to rollout to qualifying channels, and for normal-latency streams—not low- or ultra-low-latency streams. Poor audio, unrecognized speech, overlapping speakers, or simultaneous languages can prevent captions from appearing. The feature’s documentation is not a guarantee that it is enabled for a particular channel.

Third-party caption feeds

A caption feed can connect a human captioner or another caption source to a live platform, but “supports captions” is too vague to confirm compatibility. Verify the platform’s accepted format and ingest route, feed and track limits, timestamp behavior, security requirements for signed URLs, and how the player renders the result.

Human CART

CART can provide a human-produced caption stream and a workflow tailored to an event, but requires advance coordination and a working integration. Confirm how the captioner receives the audio, how captions reach the platform, who handles technical issues, and what happens if the captioner or connection drops.

Cloud stream-processing captions

Google Cloud’s Live Stream API documents AI-generated captions and translated captions for HLS and DASH live streams. For embedded captions distributed to endpoints, its documentation describes CEA-608 or CEA-708 text streams. Language availability depends on location, so check the current supported location-and-language matrix before designing around it. Google also notes a timing trade-off: synchronous caption display reduces the gap between audio and text but increases end-to-end media latency.

How to add captions on common platforms

YouTube Live: automatic captions

YouTube’s documented automatic live caption feature is English-only, applies to normal-latency streams, and is being rolled out to qualifying channels. Check the live control room and test on the actual stream rather than assuming the feature is available. If captions are missing, check latency mode, language, audio quality, overlapping speakers, and whether the channel has access. Automatic live captions do not remain on the video after the event; the later VOD caption process creates new automatic captions that may differ. YouTube encourages creators to review generated captions.

YouTube Live: external caption feed

YouTube documents embedded EIA-608/CEA-708 captions and a separate caption-feed workflow that uses a signed HTTP ingestion URL. Its documentation lists Total Eclipse, Case CATalyst, CaptionMaker, and StreamText.Net as software or services for that workflow. YouTube specifies one caption feed per stream entry point and one caption track in that workflow.

  1. Choose the delivery route. Confirm whether your encoder embeds 608/708 captions or your caption software will send a separate feed. The required configuration differs by route.
  2. Configure the platform and caption source together. For a separate feed, use the caption ingestion details generated for the stream and configure compatible caption software. Treat the signed URL as sensitive connection information.
  3. Check the system clock and software environment. YouTube recommends an accurate system clock and warns that antivirus software can interfere with captioning software.
  4. Test the actual broadcast endpoint. Confirm captions appear in the viewer player, are synchronized, and can be toggled where expected. Check the stream’s caption track and feed limits before adding another source.

Microsoft Teams: connect a CART captioner

Microsoft documents an organizer-created CART link that a captioner enters in compatible captioning software through the Teams CART Captions API. Microsoft states: “The CART software you use needs to connect through the Microsoft Teams CART Captions API.”

  1. Before the meeting, create the CART link using the Teams organizer workflow and share it with the captioner through an appropriate channel.
  2. Ask the captioner to connect using compatible CART software and the Teams CART Captions API.
  3. Arrange a technical check before attendees depend on the captions. Microsoft advises coordinating with the captioner to troubleshoot ahead of the event.
  4. During the meeting, confirm that attendees can see the captions and understand how to switch between CART and automatically generated captions when CART is enabled.

Vimeo live events: automatic captions

Vimeo says captions are saved with the archived event and can be downloaded as WebVTT for editing. They do not appear at other simulcast destinations. HLS delivery can expose generated captions to third-party HLS-compatible players. Caption display is available on the event page or embedded player, not the low-resolution preview player.

Twitch and other destinations

Twitch’s help search result points to adding real-time closed captions through broadcasting software and a Closed Captioning OBS Plugin, but the accessible official help material does not establish the plugin’s current availability, maintenance, supported caption sources, or playback behavior. Verify those details in current Twitch documentation and test the intended player before planning an event around that route. Do not assume that a feed configured for one service will carry over to another.

Simulcast, latency, and archive checks

Caption delivery is destination-specific. A source platform may show captions while a simulcast destination does not receive them, or a player may not expose the caption track even when it exists in the stream. Vimeo explicitly says its automatic captions do not appear at other simulcast destinations; its HLS output is a separate route for compatible third-party players. Verify every destination independently.

For each platform and output, establish how captions enter, which format and track are expected, the supported language, and whether captions are open or viewer-toggleable. Then check the gap between audio and text and the total stream delay. In Google Cloud’s documented pipeline, choosing synchronous display reduces caption-to-audio lag but adds end-to-end media latency. If viewers interact live, weigh that additional delay against tighter caption synchronization.

Plan separately for the archive. YouTube’s live automatic captions are not retained on the post-event video; its later VOD caption generation may differ. Vimeo documents archived captions and WebVTT downloads for editing. Confirm the actual archive output rather than treating the live player as proof that captions will be retained.

Preflight checklist before going live

  • Endpoint: Test the production stream path and the actual viewer player, not just a preview or local monitor.
  • Audio: Use clear, direct microphone audio; reduce background noise and cross-talk; avoid overlapping speakers where possible. Microsoft notes that distance from the microphone can reduce caption accuracy and recommends the highest-quality available certified equipment. These measures improve conditions but cannot guarantee a specific result.
  • Language and mode: Verify the selected caption language, account eligibility, stream latency mode, and any event-duration allowance.
  • Feed and format: Confirm embedded versus separate captions, accepted format, track/feed limits, and signed URL handling.
  • Timing and display: Check caption-to-audio synchronization, overall stream latency, viewer controls, and readability on the intended player.
  • All destinations: Test each simulcast endpoint independently; do not infer coverage from the primary platform.
  • Archive: Verify whether captions persist, must be regenerated, or can be downloaded and edited after the event.
  • Human captioner: Provide names and specialist terms in advance where possible, establish the link/API handoff, and agree on a technical-check and contingency plan.

Troubleshoot missing, late, or inaccurate captions

Symptom Likely checks and fixes
No captions on a YouTube live stream For native captions, confirm that the channel has access, the stream is normal latency, and speech is English. Improve microphone audio, reduce overlap, and check for simultaneous languages. For a separate feed, check the signed ingestion details, configured caption software, system clock, antivirus interference, and one-feed-per-entry-point limit.
Captions appear late or drift Check timestamps and synchronization at the encoder, caption source, and player. For a Google Cloud HLS/DASH workflow, synchronous display can reduce the caption-to-audio gap but increases total media latency.
Captions show on the main stream but not a simulcast Check the destination’s own caption ingest and player support. Vimeo’s automatic captions do not appear at other simulcast destinations; compatible HLS delivery is a distinct option.
Captions contain errors or omit speech Improve direct microphone pickup, reduce background noise and cross-talk, avoid overlapping speech, and prepare names or technical vocabulary where the platform allows it. Review automated output; a later YouTube VOD caption pass may differ from its live captions.
Captions appear live but not in the recording Check the platform’s archive behavior. YouTube generates new VOD automatic captions after the event rather than retaining its live automatic captions; Vimeo documents archived captions and WebVTT downloads.
CART does not appear in Teams Check that the organizer created and shared the CART link, the captioner connected through compatible software using the Teams CART Captions API, and the event’s caption display is enabled. Arrange a pre-event connection check with the captioner.
Vimeo captions are absent in preview Test the event page or embedded player; Vimeo says captions are not available in the low-resolution preview player. Also check the selected language and current account allowance.
