In OBS Studio, open Settings → Output, set Output Mode to Advanced, then find Keyframe Interval in the streaming encoder settings. For streaming, OBS’s NVIDIA NVENC guide recommends 2 seconds; otherwise, use the interval requested by your streaming destination. Keyframes help keep streams compatible and playback transitions smooth, but they are not a general-purpose sharpness setting.
What the keyframe interval changes
A keyframe is a complete reference frame in the encoded video. Between keyframes, the encoder can describe changes relative to earlier frames. The Keyframe Interval setting determines how often the encoder inserts one; OBS documents NVENC’s keyint option as an interval measured in frames.
For viewers, consistent keyframe spacing can help a platform’s transcoded stream transition smoothly between available quality options. OBS advises avoiding adaptive I-frames or scene cuts when consistent spacing is needed for that playback behavior. The interval does not directly make each frame sharper, fix a weak connection, or compensate for an unsuitable bitrate or resolution.
Set the interval in OBS
- Open OBS Studio and select Settings.
- Choose Output and change Output Mode to Advanced.
- Open the Streaming encoder settings and locate Keyframe Interval.
- Enter 2 seconds if you are following OBS’s NVIDIA NVENC streaming recommendation. If your destination specifies a different interval, follow that platform’s current instructions instead.
- Leave service-encoder enforcement enabled when appropriate. OBS notes that streaming services may limit which keyframe interval values are available.
- Select Apply, then OK. Start a test stream and check playback before relying on the setting for a live event.
OBS setting labels and available controls can vary with encoder choice and software version. If you do not see the interval in the expected place, confirm Output Mode is Advanced and inspect the streaming encoder settings, not the recording section.

Choose a value for your destination
Use the destination’s current streaming requirements as the deciding authority. The 2-second value is OBS’s recommendation in its NVIDIA NVENC guide, not a guarantee that every platform, encoder, or stream configuration requires that exact value. Platform requirements can change, so check the destination’s own live-stream settings before going live.
If OBS prevents you from entering a value, service-encoder enforcement or the selected encoder may be restricting the field. Do not force an unsupported value: use an allowed value that matches the destination’s instructions.

What to change if the stream still looks poor
- Soft or blocky video: Keyframe spacing is not a sharpness control. Review resolution, bitrate, encoder load, and the quality settings supported by your destination.
- Playback quality options transition poorly: Confirm the interval is fixed and consistent, and avoid adaptive I-frames or scene cuts where consistent spacing is needed for transcoded playback.
- OBS will not accept the requested interval: Check whether service-encoder enforcement is active and whether the selected encoder exposes that value. Follow the destination’s supported settings.
- Stream stutters or drops frames: A keyframe change alone may not resolve network or encoding overload. Check OBS’s stream status and system load, then test a lower resolution or bitrate if needed.
