For a typical live stream sent directly to a platform, choose CBR when the platform recommends it. YouTube’s current live encoder settings specify CBR. VBR can allocate bits more efficiently as video complexity changes, but it is not a universal upgrade: its benefit depends on the encoder and delivery pipeline.
What CBR and VBR mean
CBR: a steady target rate
Constant bitrate (CBR) aims to keep the encoded stream near a consistent target bitrate over time. That makes it a straightforward fit for conventional live ingest when the destination expects a predictable input rate.
VBR: a rate that can vary
Variable bitrate (VBR) lets the encoder vary bitrate within its configured mode or limits. It can spend more bits on complex scenes and fewer on simpler ones, potentially using bandwidth more efficiently. The result depends on the encoder’s settings, the available upload capacity, and whether the delivery path can use that variation.
Which mode should you use?
For YouTube Live
Use CBR for a typical YouTube Live stream: YouTube’s published live encoder settings specify “Bitrate encoding: CBR.” Follow YouTube’s recommendations for your chosen codec, resolution, and frame rate rather than treating one bitrate figure as suitable for every stream.

For other platforms
Check the destination platform’s current encoder requirements first. A platform’s ingest specification takes precedence over general advice about which mode is theoretically more efficient. The available evidence here does not establish Twitch’s current ingest requirements, so consult its current official specification before choosing a mode or bitrate for Twitch; its older guidance is not enough to set a present-day rule.
For segment-based adaptive-bitrate delivery
VBR can be useful in a different workflow: segment-based adaptive-bitrate (ABR) streaming where the encoder is aware of the ABR pipeline. Twitch’s 2017 engineering discussion describes how VBR can support more stable quality and save bits in that specific context. That is not a blanket recommendation for a basic single-bitrate live ingest.
Why the delivery path matters
A conventional live encoder sends a stream to a platform’s ingest endpoint. Segment-based ABR is a different delivery design: the stream is divided into segments and the system can deliver versions suited to different viewing conditions. Rate variation is useful only when the encoder and delivery system are designed to handle it.

Platform-side transcoding is another part of the picture. It creates alternate feeds, often with different resolutions, frame rates, or bitrates, for viewers. OBS notes that platforms differ in how they provide transcoding and that YouTube transcodes all streams; see the OBS transcoding documentation. Transcoding does not change the encoder setting the platform requests at ingest: use the destination’s current specification.
How to choose a rate-control mode in OBS
-
In OBS, open Settings, then Output. If needed, change Output Mode to Advanced to expose encoder options.
-
On the Streaming tab, select the encoder you intend to use and locate its rate-control setting. Encoder labels and available options vary by hardware and encoder.

For a standard YouTube Live ingest, select CBR, then set bitrate to a value recommended by YouTube for your codec, resolution, and frame rate. YouTube’s live settings also specify supported protocols and codecs; verify the current guidance for your chosen setup.
-
Set the keyframe interval to 2 seconds, the frequency YouTube recommends; YouTube says it should not exceed 4 seconds. Configure frame rate and resolution to match your intended output and the platform’s recommendations.

If you are using VBR for a workflow that specifically supports it, check whether the encoder exposes a target quality, target bitrate, or maximum bitrate. Do not assume a VBR setting without a clear limit will fit your upload connection or platform ingest requirements.

Run a private or unlisted test stream and review OBS’s stream status and the platform’s live health indicators. If you see dropped frames or unstable delivery, reduce output demands or resolve the network issue rather than assuming the rate-control mode alone is responsible.
YouTube’s current encoder guidance covers RTMP/RTMPS, H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 options, up to 60 fps, keyframe frequency, and configuration-specific bitrate recommendations. Check the live settings page for the exact values matching your setup: YouTube Help: Live encoder settings.
When VBR may make sense—and when it may not
- Consider VBR when the delivery workflow is ABR-aware, the encoder is configured for that workflow, and its target or maximum bitrate is understood.
- Prefer the platform’s stated mode for ordinary live ingest, even if another mode seems more bandwidth-efficient in theory.
- Account for upload capacity. A variable rate can rise when a scene is complex; ensure the connection and ingest path can handle the configured peaks.
- Do not assume CBR guarantees quality or prevents buffering. Image quality, network stability, encoder behavior, buffering, and platform processing all affect the outcome.
Common problems and fixes
The stream does not meet the platform’s encoder requirements
Confirm the destination, codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, keyframe interval, and protocol against its current live specification. For YouTube, use CBR and its configuration-matched bitrate recommendations.

OBS shows dropped frames or the stream is unstable
Check network stability and whether the configured bitrate or possible VBR peaks exceed available upload capacity. Lower output demands or bitrate as appropriate, then test again. A switch from VBR to CBR alone cannot repair an unreliable connection.
VBR options are confusing or behave differently by encoder
Read the selected encoder’s controls carefully. For example, OBS’s Advanced NVENC Options (31.0) describes “Variable Bitrate with Target Quality,” which behaves similarly to CQP while allowing a maximum bitrate; OBS states that maxBitRate is used for VBR and ignored in CBR mode. Those details apply to that NVENC documentation, not every encoder.
A Twitch recommendation online conflicts with another
Prefer Twitch’s current official ingest specification. Its 2013 CBR article explains an earlier delivery design and is useful as historical context, but it does not establish a universal current rule.
