You can move live-streaming work to the cloud without replacing your cameras, microphones, or local production software. Keep producing in OBS or another encoder, then send its feed to a cloud service for ingest, encoding, packaging, recording, or viewer delivery—moving only the stages that solve a real problem for your setup.

Decide what “moving to the cloud” means for your stream

A live stream has distinct stages: production (cameras, microphones, graphics, and scene switching), ingest (sending the encoder’s output to a service), encoding or transcoding, packaging and origin, recording, and delivery to viewers. Moving one stage does not require moving all the others.

Before choosing a design, write down your current encoder and destinations, expected concurrent audience and viewer geography, acceptable glass-to-glass latency, recording and playback needs, and how much interruption the event can tolerate. Those requirements determine whether you need a simple managed input or a more elaborate, redundant system.

Choose an operating model

Model How it works Best fit and trade-off
Managed ingest-to-delivery service Send RTMPS or SRT from production software to a live input; the service handles more of the processing and delivery path and supplies playback options. A quicker route to cloud delivery with less infrastructure to operate, but less control over the underlying components. Cloudflare describes this end-to-end model in its Stream live video documentation.
Cloud-managed building blocks Configure separate ingest, encoding, packaging or origin, and CDN delivery services. AWS documents a MediaLive → MediaPackage → CloudFront reference workflow. Offers more control and redundancy options, but requires more configuration and operational expertise. See AWS’s live-streaming architecture overview.
Interactive, subsecond workflow Use a real-time approach such as WebRTC when conversational delay is essential. Useful for conference-like interaction; AWS cautions that stateful WebRTC approaches do not scale as effectively for one-to-many distribution. Consider the audience pattern before choosing it.

Compare candidate services on latency, audience size and geography, redundancy, supported ingest protocols and codecs, recording and playback, your team’s operating skills, and total usage-based cost. A larger architecture is not automatically better: it adds work and expense that may not be justified for a modest or noncritical stream.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Map the signal path before configuring anything

Managed service path

Camera and audio → OBS or another encoder → cloud live input → service processing and delivery → player → viewers. Your local setup can continue to handle scenes and production while the service takes over selected downstream jobs.

Component architecture path

Encoder → ingest → cloud encoding → packaging or origin → CDN → viewers. For an important event, the design may add two diverse ingest feeds, separate availability zones, or primary and secondary processing paths. Each additional path needs configuration and monitoring, and redundancy increases cost.

An origin can serve limited audiences, but AWS’s guidance recommends a CDN to scale beyond a handful; treat that as architectural guidance, not a universal viewer threshold. For high-importance events, AWS recommends considering ingest in at least two Availability Zones using diverse network paths.

  1. Create a cloud live input. In the chosen provider’s dashboard, create an input and obtain its ingest URL and private stream key. Choose an ingest protocol the provider supports. Cloudflare documents RTMPS and SRT input; its documented SRT support uses caller mode.
  2. Enter the credentials in OBS. In the Cloudflare walkthrough, the path is to set OBS’s service to Custom, then enter the RTMPS URL and stream key supplied for that input. Do not expose the key publicly or paste it into a public chat.
  3. Set compatible video and audio output. Cloudflare’s live documentation lists H.264 video and AAC audio inputs and requires closed GOPs. Use the codec and profile supported by the specific ingest service you selected.
  4. Choose rate control, bitrate, and keyframe interval for that service. Cloudflare recommends CBR when possible for stability. Its documentation says creator bitrate is typically well under 12 Mbps, adjusted upward for high motion or frame rate and downward for low-motion content. It recommends a keyframe/GOP interval of 2 to 8 seconds: shorter intervals reduce latency but encoding efficiency, while longer intervals improve efficiency but increase latency. These are Cloudflare recommendations, not universal settings for every provider.
  5. Add a test source and start an unlisted or private test. Cloudflare’s OBS example uses a test source. Confirm the provider reports that the input is connected, then check actual viewer playback, sound, image quality, and delay—not merely that the encoder says it is sending.
  6. Check reconnect behavior. Configure the encoder to retry after a connection drop. Cloudflare notes that OBS reconnects automatically, while FFmpeg may require custom configuration. Confirm the chosen encoder and service recover as expected before relying on them for an event.
  7. Protect and rotate the key if needed. Treat the stream key like a password: limit access to people who need it and revoke or rotate it if exposed. Cloudflare documents key rotation and revocation of prior credentials.

Cloudflare’s official setup guidance and OBS walkthrough are available at Start a live stream and First Live Stream with OBS.

Migrate in stages and keep a fallback for important events

  1. Build the cloud path while leaving your current workflow intact.
  2. Run a private or unlisted test with the same cameras, scenes, resolution, and frame rate you expect to use.
  3. Compare the cloud output with your existing path for playback quality, audio sync, latency, reconnect behavior, and recording needs.
  4. For a consequential event, retain a workable fallback until the cloud route has been validated in your own environment. Decide in advance who switches paths and how they will tell whether the cloud input or viewer delivery has failed.

Testing the complete path matters because an encoder connection alone does not prove viewers can play the output successfully.

Plan reliability, latency, and cost around the workload

Reliability

Choose redundancy according to the event’s failure tolerance. A second ingest path, diverse network routes, or separate availability zones can reduce some single points of failure, but add services to configure and pay for. Verify the service’s behavior after a feed disconnects and the operator steps needed to switch or recover.

Latency

Use the least complex delivery path that meets the audience’s interaction needs. If viewers only watch, a standard live delivery workflow may be appropriate. If participants need conversation-like, subsecond interaction, evaluate WebRTC and its scaling trade-offs rather than assuming a conventional live stream will meet that requirement.

Usage-based cost

Cloud costs depend on the service and the actual workload. Cloudflare’s pricing page, accessed October 3, 2026, lists delivery at $1 per 1,000 minutes delivered and prepaid storage capacity at $5 per month per 1,000 minutes of storage capacity; its page says ingress and encoding are free and bandwidth is included in delivery. Its example counts two viewers watching 30 minutes as 60 delivered minutes, or $0.06. These are Cloudflare-specific published rates and should be checked against the current Cloudflare Stream pricing page before budgeting.

AWS’s reference solution does not yield one fixed event price: cost varies with the encoding profile, bitrate, and number of viewers. Its event-oriented solution can be deployed for the event and deleted afterward, so spend depends on configuration and usage. Estimate using event duration, viewing time and audience, recording retention, output profiles and bitrates, geography, redundancy, and whether channels run continuously. Do not compare service prices without matching those assumptions.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your specific goal is to keep a prerecorded video running on YouTube around the clock, rather than move a live camera production pipeline, StreamNeo is a separate, simpler option. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud.

  • Nothing has to stay on at home: the stream continues with your computer off.
  • One flat price per slot for any quality you upload, up to 4K 60fps, with no re-encode or quality tiers.
  • Automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream.
  • The first day is free with no card.

Monthly: $9.99 per month. Start your free day on StreamNeo.
