Scale Wowza Streaming Engine to the workload you have measured—not to a generic viewers-per-server figure. First find whether the constraint is encoding or transcoding, origin ingest, viewer delivery, or network capacity. Then load-test a representative setup and choose the smallest architecture that meets the event’s demand and failure requirements. For larger audiences, that commonly means sending encoder feeds to origin server(s), serving viewers from edge servers, and distributing player connections with a load balancer; HTTP Origin with a CDN or cache can offload HTTP delivery.

Start by identifying what needs to scale

Adding servers helps only when the added capacity addresses the bottleneck. Before changing the architecture, document the workload and measure how the current deployment behaves under it. Wowza’s official scaling guidance says a server’s comfortable concurrent-stream limit varies with hardware, network configuration, stream type, bitrate, and connection type. It does not establish one generally applicable maximum viewers-per-server number.

Build a workload profile

  • Source streams: Count the concurrent encoder feeds, note each stream’s bitrate and protocol, and record whether Wowza will transcode it.
  • Audience: Estimate normal and peak viewers, where they are located, and whether an event could draw an unexpected spike.
  • Playback: List the viewer protocols, such as HLS or MPEG-DASH, and whether viewers use a controlled private network or the public internet.
  • Operations and budget: Decide how much setup and ongoing cluster management are practical, and compare keeping peak capacity online with adding temporary cloud instances for events.

Classify the constraint

  • Processing: Incoming stream handling or transcoding may be consuming the available CPU or supported accelerator capacity.
  • Origin ingest: The origin may be doing too much work receiving and preparing streams or supplying downstream servers.
  • Viewer delivery: The bottleneck may be the Engine’s work serving player connections, rather than receiving encoder feeds.
  • Network: Throughput or network configuration may limit delivery even when server processing still has headroom.

Use server-resource and network measurements alongside viewer startup, buffering, and error behavior to distinguish these cases. Wowza’s scaling documentation describes example cluster scenarios labelled for up to 50,000 concurrent connections and for more than 50,000. Those are scenario labels, not a per-server rating or a promise that a given deployment will support those audiences.

Choose an architecture that fits the workload

Situation Starting point Main trade-off
One stream and a modest, predictable audience A single Engine instance, load-tested and monitored Simplest to operate; capacity is limited to what that specific configuration can sustain.
A large live audience served by Wowza servers One or more repeater origins, edge servers, and load balancing Adds delivery capacity and control, but brings routing and cluster operations.
Mostly HLS or MPEG-DASH viewers, especially during a bursty event HTTP Origin with a CDN or caching proxy Can offload HTTP delivery; requires a compatible workflow and review of CDN configuration and cost.
A short event that needs extra Wowza capacity Temporary cloud Engine instances, for example as edges Avoids keeping all peak hardware permanently online, but cloud runtime and setup still cost money and effort.
Viewers on a controlled private network with configurable routers UDP multicast, if the network supports it Routers provide fan-out; it is not a general solution for uncontrolled internet viewers.

Use origin and edge servers for Wowza scale-out

In a repeater deployment, encoders publish to an origin and viewers play from edge servers. The origin can also transcode. Edges take on viewer delivery, and you can add them as demand grows. A load-balancing method is needed to route player connections among multiple edges. This architecture distributes work; it does not remove the need to test origin ingest, edge delivery, and network capacity together.

Choose on-demand or persistent repeater mode

Wowza describes two modes for Live Edge applications. The appropriate choice depends on when streams need to be available, the protocols in use, bandwidth, player movement between edges, and how you will operate the deployment.

  • On-demand: The default mode for Live Edge applications. An edge requests a stream when a player asks for it, which Wowza describes as easier to configure and scale quickly. HTTP segments are packetized on the origin, so edges use the same segment sequence; this can make player migration between edges seamless. Connections can disconnect when no longer requested.
  • Persistent: Configured streams connect in advance through Stream Files or Java API methods. Use it when streams should be available before viewers request them. HTTP segments may differ between edges, which can interrupt playback if a player moves between them. For multiple protocols requested continuously, Wowza says persistent mode is more likely to use less bandwidth over a long period.

Do not treat either mode as universally better. Confirm its behavior against the Engine version you deploy: Wowza’s discussion of repeater trade-offs includes an overview from 2021, while its newer setup documentation covers primary and secondary origins.

Plan origin failover and edge health

Wowza’s setup documentation supports specifying a primary origin and an optional secondary origin. The secondary is for failover; Wowza says clients may wait up to 12 seconds for failover to the backup origin. Treat that as documented behavior, not a guaranteed recovery time for every client or network. Test what viewers experience when an origin fails, and verify that your load balancer detects an unhealthy edge and stops routing new player connections to it.

Offload HTTP playback with HTTP Origin and a CDN

Normal HTTP playback sessions have unique session IDs, which Wowza says prevent caching by HTTP proxies. HTTP Origin mode is sessionless, allowing caching proxies to cache and redistribute content instead of sending every request back to the Engine. This is relevant to HTTP workflows such as HLS and MPEG-DASH, not a blanket scaling mechanism for every protocol.

Wowza’s documentation describes Amazon CloudFront as a ready-built HTTP caching proxy that can sit in front of an Engine server and scale automatically; it also names Akamai and EdgeCast as third-party CDN options. A separate Wowza developer guide documents a Wowza CDN on Fastly workflow: stream directly to the CDN from a Live HTTP Origin application, or send a stream to Wowza Video for transcoding and CDN delivery. These are documented service paths, not a current price comparison or an endorsement of one provider.

Check these points before choosing a cache or CDN

  • Protocol and cacheability: Confirm that the delivery workflow is HTTP-based and configured for HTTP Origin, rather than assuming a CDN will cache any Engine output.
  • Audience geography: Consider where viewers are relative to the origin and CDN delivery network.
  • Event duration and traffic shape: Compare the cost of sustained delivery with temporary peaks. Wowza notes that CloudFront may be costly for long periods of heavy use in one cluster scenario; no general cheapest option follows from that observation.
  • Configuration and operations: Account for cache setup, origin protection, monitoring, and the behavior you need when an origin or delivery service fails.

CDN and cloud costs depend on the workload and current provider pricing. Obtain a workload-specific estimate rather than extrapolating from a server-count rule or assuming that temporary capacity is automatically less expensive.

Keep transcoding capacity separate from delivery capacity

Wowza Transcoder decodes incoming audio and video, then re-encodes outputs for target devices. That work can become a processing bottleneck even when edges or a CDN have ample viewer-delivery capacity. Aligned keyframes in output renditions support adaptive-bitrate delivery; test the actual transcoding profile as part of the full workload.

The current Wowza Transcoder guide says video scaling uses CPU by default. It documents supported NVIDIA CUDA and AMD Xilinx U30 acceleration options that can reduce CPU use for scaling, with platform and configuration limits; AMD Xilinx U30 acceleration is Linux-only. A GPU identifier setting does not itself provide automatic GPU load balancing. These notes are not a performance guarantee for a particular Engine version, platform, or deployment. Match the supported configuration and benchmark it before planning capacity around acceleration.

Load-test the deployment before the event

Wowza’s official scaling guidance says the reliable way to determine the limit of a particular configuration is to load-test it. Its documentation index points to a load-testing guide using Apache JMeter, but the reviewed guidance supplies no universal load profile or benchmark. Build a test around the real stream and viewer behavior rather than treating a generic connection count as proof of capacity.

  1. Reproduce the production path: Use representative source streams, codecs, bitrates, protocols, transcoding settings, origin/edge roles, and CDN or cache configuration where applicable.
  2. Represent the audience: Simulate the viewer protocols, connection pattern, and geography as closely as your test setup allows. Include expected peak demand and a reasonable margin for an unplanned spike.
  3. Ramp load in stages: Increase concurrent viewers gradually instead of jumping straight to the target. At each stage, allow enough time to see sustained behavior, not just a brief successful connection burst.
  4. Record both capacity and quality: Track CPU and other relevant server resources, network throughput, startup time, buffering, errors, and the point where playback quality degrades.
  5. Exercise failure behavior: Test what happens when an origin or edge becomes unavailable, whether the load balancer removes a failed server, and whether secondary-origin failover behaves acceptably for your clients.
  6. Set an operational limit: Use the first repeatable signs of degradation to define a safe operating range for this tested configuration, then monitor it during the event.

Repeat the test after material changes to hardware, network configuration, stream profile, Engine version, transcoding, protocols, or delivery architecture. A result for one configuration should not be reused as a capacity promise for another.

Consider multicast only on a controlled private network

If viewers are on a managed private network and its routers can be configured for multicast, UDP multicast can move fan-out to network routers rather than a Wowza server cluster. Wowza documents RTP and MPEG-TS over multicast and recommends RTP; its documentation notes MPEG-TS licensing requirements. This is not a default option for public internet audiences, whose routers and networks are outside your control.

Troubleshoot the scaling bottleneck

Symptom Likely area to investigate Next action
Playback degrades as viewers increase, while source ingest remains stable Viewer delivery capacity on edges, origin, or network Compare resource and throughput measurements; test additional edges or an HTTP cache/CDN for compatible HTTP playback.
Transcoding demand rises and processing resources become constrained Transcoder workload Test the deployed transcoding profile separately from viewer delivery, and verify supported platform and acceleration configuration before relying on GPU capacity.
Streams are not available on an edge when expected Repeater mode or stream configuration Check whether on-demand behavior fits the requirement or whether configured persistent streams are needed; validate the setup for the deployed Engine version.
A player stutters or is interrupted after moving between edges Persistent-mode segment differences or edge routing Check whether the player is moving between edges with different HTTP segment sequences; review repeater mode and load-balancer behavior.
Viewer requests still put heavy load on the Engine in an HTTP workflow HTTP session behavior or cache configuration Confirm HTTP Origin mode and the CDN/cache path; ordinary session-based HTTP playback is not cacheable by proxies according to Wowza.
Failover takes longer than viewers can tolerate Origin backup and client/network behavior Test primary-origin failure with representative clients. The documented up-to-12-second behavior is not a universal end-to-end recovery guarantee.
More servers do not improve playback Unresolved network, processing, or architecture bottleneck Compare measurements before and after the change; identify the constrained stage instead of adding capacity blindly.
