A live stream typically moves through five stages: capture and compose audio and video, encode them to the destination’s requirements, send the output to the platform’s ingest endpoint, let the platform prepare playback versions, and monitor stream health. The right settings depend on the destination and your upload connection—not just the encoder. This guide explains the workflow and gives YouTube-specific starting points from YouTube Help, accessed October 3, 2026.

How a live streaming workflow works

  1. Capture and compose. Gather sources such as a camera, game, or screen, along with audio. A broadcast tool combines them into the program you intend to send. Twitch documents software encoders, consoles, and dedicated hardware encoders as possible broadcaster tools; a hardware encoder is an option, not a universal requirement. Twitch Developers: Video Broadcast
  2. Encode. The encoder turns the composed audio and video into a stream using a codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and keyframe cadence the destination accepts. These settings work together: a higher resolution or frame rate generally requires more data, and a setting supported by one service is not automatically right for another.
  3. Connect and send. Configure the ingest address and authorization details, commonly including a stream key. Twitch documents RTMP ingest URLs and stream keys. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport and also documents HLS for some capabilities. Google Cloud’s Live Stream API documents RTMP_PUSH and SRT_PUSH. The endpoint and protocol must match both the service and encoder. YouTube Live Streaming API · Google Cloud Live Stream API
  4. Platform processing and playback. The service receives the encoded source and may create additional versions at different resolutions, frame rates, or bitrates for viewers. YouTube says it automatically transcodes live streams. OBS describes transcoding as producing these alternate versions, but access to transcoding on other services can depend on platform and account conditions. OBS: Transcoding
  5. Test and monitor. Check the actual upload connection, test with representative motion and audio, and watch the platform’s stream-health indicators during the event. A recommended bitrate is a setting to evaluate—not a guarantee that a particular connection can sustain it.

Choose settings for the destination

For YouTube, its encoder-settings guidance accessed October 3, 2026 lists RTMP/RTMPS, H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1; frame rates up to 60 fps; constant bitrate (CBR); and AAC or MP3 audio. YouTube recommends a 2-second keyframe frequency and says not to exceed 4 seconds. It recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport. These recommendations are specific to YouTube and should not be treated as universal settings for other platforms. YouTube Help: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions

YouTube bitrate examples

The following are YouTube’s recommended video bitrates in the cited Help page, accessed October 3, 2026. Choose the value for the codec you are actually using; these figures are not Google Cloud API recommendations or guarantees of connection capacity.

Output AV1 or H.265/HEVC H.264
1080p at 60 fps 12 Mbps 17 Mbps
720p at 60 fps 6 Mbps 8 Mbps

Keyframes, transport, and HDR

For YouTube, use the stated 2-second keyframe frequency unless your supported encoder workflow requires otherwise; do not exceed YouTube’s stated 4-second maximum. Use RTMPS where supported for encrypted transport. For HDR, YouTube recommends H.265 over RTMP(S) and says HLS may be considered when an encoder lacks the needed RTMP capability. Check the current YouTube guidance and your encoder’s capabilities before configuring an HDR workflow.

How to choose an encoding workflow

Workflow choice Useful when Check before going live
Software encoder You need to combine sources on a computer and its processing capacity is sufficient for the chosen output. Confirm the encoder supports the destination’s codec and protocol, and that the computer can maintain the output while running the production.
Console Your source is a console and its built-in broadcast path meets the production needs. Confirm the console’s available destination, output controls, and authorization flow. Available details vary by console and platform.
Dedicated hardware encoder You want a separate encoding device in a workflow where its supported inputs and output fit the production. Check the device’s supported codecs, protocols, resolutions, frame rates, and connection requirements against the destination. No particular model is required by the workflow.

Twitch lists software encoders, consoles, and hardware encoders as broadcaster-tool categories. Its detailed encoding settings are destination-specific; do not infer Twitch bitrate or codec values from YouTube’s recommendations. Twitch Developers: Video Broadcast

When SRT may be appropriate

Google Cloud’s Live Stream API recommends SRT when possible in that API context, citing features that include packet-drop recovery and forward error correction, provided the encoder supports it. Google Cloud Documentation states: “The SRT protocol is preferred over RTMP because SRT is more advanced and provides additional features such as the following:” This is guidance for the Google Cloud Live Stream API, not a general instruction to replace RTMP/RTMPS on every platform. Its output ladder lists 9,000 Kbps for 1920×1080p50/60 H.264; that figure describes the API’s output rendition, not YouTube’s input recommendation. Test the connection and monitor stream health

  1. Check the destination’s current requirements. Confirm accepted protocol, codec, bitrate range, resolution, frame rate, and keyframe interval for the specific platform and stream type.
  2. Measure upload capacity. Run a speed test from the connection that will carry the event. The upload must sustain the selected stream; avoid treating a single test result or a platform bitrate recommendation as a reliability guarantee.
  3. Test representative content. Send a private or otherwise appropriate test with the actual motion, audio, resolution, and frame rate planned for the event. Fast motion and complex scenes can expose issues that a static test misses.
  4. Watch stream health during the event. Monitor the platform’s health status and encoder output. If problems appear, reduce the output demand or resolve the network or encoding bottleneck, then verify the change before relying on it for the full event.

Troubleshoot common workflow failures

Symptom Likely area to check Practical next step
Platform does not receive a stream Ingest URL, stream key, destination selection, or protocol mismatch. Recheck the destination’s ingest details and authorization in the encoder; confirm the selected protocol is accepted by that endpoint.
Stream health is unstable or frames are lost Upload connection may not sustain the selected bitrate, or the encoder/computer may be overloaded. Check platform health indicators and encoder status, test the connection, and try a lower resolution, frame rate, or bitrate that remains within the platform’s requirements.
Video looks poor despite a connection that seems adequate Output bitrate may be too low for the chosen resolution, frame rate, codec, or motion; encoder settings may not match the intended output. Verify the codec and output settings, then compare against the destination’s guidance. Test with representative motion rather than judging from a static scene.
Viewers cannot select alternate quality levels Transcoding or rendition availability is controlled by the destination and may vary outside YouTube. Confirm the platform’s current transcoding availability for the account and stream; the encoder alone does not determine which viewer renditions are offered.
HDR workflow will not connect or produce the expected result The encoder may lack the required protocol or codec capability for the chosen YouTube HDR path. Check YouTube’s current HDR guidance and encoder support; YouTube recommends H.265 over RTMP(S) and notes HLS as a consideration when needed RTMP capability is absent.

Keep a YouTube stream running without a home encoder

For an event you produce live from a camera, game, or screen, use the capture-and-encode workflow above. For an always-on YouTube channel that plays uploaded recordings or a playlist, a cloud looping service is a different workflow: it streams uploaded videos rather than capturing a live camera feed.

Or let it run in the cloud

With StreamNeo, upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. The cloud keeps the uploaded video looping, so nothing has to stay on at home. Each slot supports any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers; automatic recovery is included if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly service is $9.99 per month. Start with StreamNeo.
