Adaptive bitrate streaming (ABR) lets YouTube adjust the quality a viewer receives as their connection and device conditions change. Creators do not need to turn on a special ABR switch: they provide an uploaded video or a live encoded feed, and YouTube processes and delivers it for viewers.
What adaptive bitrate streaming means on YouTube
A video can be delivered at different quality levels rather than one fixed bitrate for every viewer. YouTube says it changes video quality based on viewing conditions; in practice, a picture may step down if a connection or device cannot sustain its current quality. When conditions improve, playback may move to a higher quality.
For live streams, the creator sends an encoded feed to YouTube. YouTube says it automatically transcodes that live stream into multiple output formats so viewers on different devices and networks can watch. The creator’s encoder handles production and contribution to YouTube; YouTube handles the platform-side transcoding and adaptive playback.
What creators configure—and what YouTube handles
- For an upload: prepare and upload a video file using YouTube’s upload encoding guidance. YouTube processes it after upload for playback.
- For a live stream: configure an encoder and network to send a supported live feed to YouTube. YouTube then transcodes the feed into output formats for viewers.
- For viewers: playback quality can change according to their viewing conditions. This behavior is not a special creator-side ABR setting.
An encoder is part of a live production workflow, but an “ABR encoder” is not required to make YouTube adapt playback quality. Hardware encoding may suit a particular production setup; it is optional equipment, not a prerequisite for YouTube’s adaptive delivery.

Upload bitrate is not live-stream bitrate
The upload figures below are YouTube’s recommended SDR encoding bitrates for the video file you prepare. Live figures are recommended bitrates for the incoming encoder feed. They describe different stages and should not be interchanged. YouTube’s upload guidance also notes that audio playback bitrate is not related to video resolution.
| Workflow and format | YouTube recommendation | What the figure applies to |
|---|---|---|
| SDR upload, 1080p, standard frame rate | 8 Mbps | Encoding the uploaded file |
| SDR upload, 1080p, high frame rate | 12 Mbps | Encoding the uploaded file |
| SDR upload, 2160p (4K), standard frame rate | 35–45 Mbps | Encoding the uploaded file |
| SDR upload, 2160p (4K), high frame rate | 53–68 Mbps | Encoding the uploaded file |
These are YouTube Help recommendations, not measurements of the bitrate viewers will receive. For uploads, YouTube recommends an MP4 container, H.264 video, progressive scan, and a variable bitrate workflow, among other settings. If you cannot encode to the preferred specifications, YouTube suggests providing the highest resolution available and uploading test videos.

Recommended YouTube live ingest bitrates
Choose the live recommendation that matches your codec, resolution, and frame rate. The examples here are YouTube’s recommended live ingestion bitrates for 1080p; they are not promises about viewer playback bitrate.
| Live resolution and frame rate | AV1 or H.265/HEVC | H.264 |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 fps | 10 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 12 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
YouTube’s live guidance covers RTMP/RTMPS, H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1, up to 60 fps. It recommends RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe frequency; the keyframe interval should not exceed four seconds. Use the bitrate row for your chosen codec and output format rather than assuming one bitrate applies to every live stream.

Set up and test a live stream
- Choose the live workflow and output. Select the resolution, frame rate, and supported codec that fit your production and connection. If you are streaming prerecorded material as a live feed, the feed still needs to meet live ingest requirements.
- Configure the encoder. Use a supported protocol (YouTube recommends RTMPS), set CBR, choose the matching recommended bitrate, and set a two-second keyframe interval that does not exceed four seconds.
- Check outbound bandwidth. Run an upload speed test and account for other traffic sharing the connection. YouTube recommends leaving 20% room beyond the total streaming bitrate; treat this as setup guidance, not as a guarantee of uninterrupted service.
- Preview before the event. Test the complete encoder and network setup in advance, check the preview, and monitor YouTube’s stream health while live.
- Choose latency for the event. Lower latency can help when interaction matters, but YouTube notes it may mean more playback buffering. Pick the latency setting according to how important real-time interaction is for your audience.
HDR live streaming is a separate workflow
HDR is not required for ordinary adaptive playback. YouTube’s HDR live guidance specifies HEVC, 10-bit video, BT.2020 color primaries, and PQ or HLG transfer characteristics, with an RTMP(S) or HLS workflow. The source, encoder, protocol, and HDR signaling need to align. Viewers without supported HDR devices may see SDR. HDR uploads have separate encoding and metadata guidance.
Why YouTube playback quality may change
A quality change is expected behavior when viewing conditions change; it does not by itself show that the creator changed the stream. For a live broadcast, distinguish viewer-side playback adaptation from problems with the incoming feed.

- Only some viewers report quality changes: their network or device conditions may differ. YouTube adapts delivery to those conditions.
- The live preview or stream health shows a problem: check outbound bandwidth, shared network use, encoder settings, and whether the feed is stable at the selected bitrate. Run a test stream and monitor stream health.
- Upload quality looks wrong after processing: check that the source file follows upload encoding guidance and allow YouTube to process it. Upload bitrate recommendations describe the source file, not a fixed viewer bitrate.
