For YouTube Live, the right codec depends on the ingest protocol you use: YouTube lists H.264 for RTMP and RTMPS, H.264 or HEVC for HLS, and H.264 or VP9 for DASH. A codec compresses and decodes the video; a protocol is the route that carries it to the platform. Check both before configuring an encoder, then weigh latency, resolution, and HDR needs.
Codec vs. protocol: what each one does
A video codec is the method an encoder uses to compress video and a decoder uses to reconstruct it. H.264, HEVC (also called H.265), and VP9 are codec names. A streaming protocol defines how media is packaged and delivered to a service. The codec and protocol work together: a platform can accept a codec over one ingest route and not another.
For example, the IETF HLS specification describes playlists and media segments, and uses a CODECS attribute to identify media formats. That attribute may contain identifiers such as mp4a.40.2,avc1.4d401e, representing AAC-LC audio and H.264 Main Profile Level 3.0 video. These identifiers describe formats within a stream; they are not protocol names. IETF RFC 8216.
Which codecs does YouTube Live accept?
Google’s current YouTube Live comparison lists these video codecs by ingest protocol. This is YouTube-specific guidance; do not assume another platform accepts the same combinations.

| YouTube ingest protocol | Listed video codec(s) | Encryption and latency | What to consider |
|---|---|---|---|
| RTMP | H.264 | Unencrypted; suitable for normal, low, or ultra-low latency | Use only if the unencrypted route fits your security requirements and encoder workflow. |
| RTMPS | H.264 | Encrypted; suitable for normal, low, or ultra-low latency | Google describes RTMPS as the secure extension of RTMP. |
| HLS | H.264, HEVC | Encrypted; not suited to ultra-low latency; supports HDR | Consider it when higher quality or resolution matters more than ultra-low latency and your encoder meets YouTube’s HLS requirements. |
| DASH | H.264, VP9 | Encrypted; not suited to ultra-low latency | VP9 is listed for this YouTube protocol, not as a universal streaming option. |
Protocol support and latency descriptions are from Google’s YouTube Live encoder settings comparison. The table does not establish how these codecs compare in visual quality, compression efficiency, encoding load, licensing, or support across receiving devices.
How to choose a codec and ingest route
- Start with the destination. Check the platform’s current documentation for the exact ingest protocol and codec combination. For YouTube, use the matrix above; requirements can vary by service and protocol.
- Set your latency target. YouTube lists RTMP and RTMPS as suitable for normal, low, or ultra-low latency. HLS and DASH are segment-based routes and typically incur greater latency; YouTube says HLS is not suited to ultra-low latency.
- Check resolution and HDR requirements. YouTube lists HEVC with HLS, which supports HDR, and VP9 with DASH. That does not mean either is automatically better for your setup: confirm that the selected protocol and encoder can deliver the format you need.
- Verify encoder support. Make sure your software or hardware encoder actually offers the codec and ingest configuration required by the destination. Check available hardware acceleration and test the complete path; the codec name alone does not establish encoding performance or receiving-device compatibility.
- Validate the output against the platform’s current settings. Confirm video and audio formats, frame rate, packaging, and any color requirements. If a codec option is missing or the ingest fails, compare the encoder output with the requirements for that specific protocol rather than choosing a codec based on its name alone.
YouTube HLS: format and HDR requirements
YouTube’s HLS ingest guide sets specific requirements for this workflow. They should not be generalized to RTMP, RTMPS, DASH, or other streaming services.

- 5-in-1 USB-C Hub: Experience comprehensive connectivity featuring a Power Delivery input, two USB-A 2.0 ports, a USB-A 3.0 port, and an HDMI port. (Note: The USB-C power delivery input port is only for connecting an external wall charger to power your laptop and cannot power peripheral devices.)
- 90W Pass-Through Charging: Achieve optimal charging with 90W pass-through power to your laptop, supported by a total input of 100W, with the hub reserving 10W for operational efficiency. (Note: Wall charger not included.)
- Quick Data Transfers: Accelerate your productivity with rapid data transfers using a high-speed 5Gbps USB 3.0 port and two 480Mbps USB 2.0 ports.
- 4K HDMI Display: Enhance your visual experience with a hub capable of delivering 4K resolution at 30Hz in both mirror and extend modes. Please note that this hub is compatible with MacBook (macOS 12 and newer), Windows 10 and 11, ChromeOS, and laptops equipped with DP Alt Mode and Power Delivery. Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- Mux audio and video in M2TS.
- Use H.264 or HEVC video.
- Use a single AAC audio track.
- Use a closed GOP; the guide permits frame rates up to 60 fps.
- For HDR, use HEVC and meet the guide’s color requirements: 10-bit PQ or HLG, YUV 4:2:0 10-bit, and Rec. 2020 primaries and matrix details.
- Use media segments of one to four seconds as Google recommends; segments must not exceed five seconds. Shorter segments can reduce latency, but can increase rebuffer risk and reduce encoding efficiency.
Google describes HLS ingestion as a good choice for premium content that needs high quality and high resolution at relatively higher latency. See the detailed YouTube Live Streaming API HLS ingest guide for the full format and color requirements.
What the codec label cannot tell you
A codec label by itself does not tell you whether the stream will work well. The destination’s protocol support, your encoder’s implementation, available hardware acceleration, the receiving devices, the requested resolution, and your latency target all matter. The cited YouTube material specifies supported combinations and HLS constraints; it does not provide a controlled comparison of the codecs’ image quality, bitrate savings, compute use, or device coverage. Avoid treating claims about one codec being universally more efficient or visually better as established for your particular stream.

For broader standards context, ITU-T’s H.222.0 systems recommendation describes extensions supporting video coding specifications including H.264 and H.265, as well as DASH. It is standards context, not a quality comparison. ITU-T H.222.0.
Troubleshooting codec and ingest problems
- The encoder does not offer the codec you expect: Check which ingest protocol is selected and what that platform documents for it. YouTube lists HEVC under HLS, not RTMP or RTMPS, and VP9 under DASH, not HLS.
- YouTube rejects an HLS stream: Check M2TS muxing, H.264 or HEVC video, single-track AAC audio, closed GOP, frame rate, and segment duration against Google’s HLS guide.
- An HDR HLS stream is not accepted or looks wrong: Confirm that you are using HEVC and that the output meets the guide’s bit-depth, transfer-function, chroma-subsampling, and Rec. 2020 requirements.
- Latency is too high: Reconsider the ingest route. YouTube identifies RTMP and RTMPS as suitable for ultra-low latency, whereas HLS and DASH are not. For HLS, shorter segments may lower latency, but Google notes potential rebuffering and encoding-efficiency trade-offs.
- A stream works on one service or device but not another: Re-check the receiving platform’s current codec and protocol requirements and the playback device’s support. YouTube’s compatibility table does not establish compatibility elsewhere.
Keeping a YouTube stream running around the clock
If you are setting up a 24/7 stream of uploaded or pre-recorded videos, the codec is only one part of the job: the ingest route and encoder output still need to meet YouTube’s requirements. StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos; it loops them from the cloud, so your computer does not have to stay on. It streams the uploaded video as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free without a card. See StreamNeo.
