To get started with Wowza live streaming, first identify which product you’re using: Wowza Video is the hosted cloud workflow, while Wowza Streaming Engine is a media server you install or run through a Docker trial. The tutorials below are organized by that choice, so you can follow the right first-stream path instead of mixing instructions from two different products.
Choose the right Wowza tutorial first
Wowza Video and Wowza Streaming Engine can both deliver live video, but their setup paths differ. In Wowza Video, you create a live stream in the hosted service, send it an encoder feed, and can test playback on a Wowza-hosted page. With Streaming Engine, you publish to an application on a media server and configure a playback path separately. This is a workflow comparison, not a performance test.
| Question | Wowza Video | Wowza Streaming Engine |
|---|---|---|
| Where does setup happen? | In the hosted Wowza Video account interface. | On an installed or Docker-deployed media server, using the relevant Engine setup tools. |
| What is a good first source? | OBS sending RTMP to the connection details provided for the live stream. | OBS, FFmpeg, a simulated stream, or a webcam over WebRTC, depending on the trial path. |
| Where can you test playback? | The Wowza-hosted playback page described in the getting-started guide. | A separately configured playback path; the Engine setup guides show how to publish and test. |
| Best starting resource | RTMP quick start for Wowza Video. | Streaming Engine trial options and the Engine getting-started documentation. |
The Wowza Video article titled “Get started with Wowza Video” is explicitly marked Legacy and was updated on 2024-02-08. It uses video.wowza.com. The newer RTMP quick start was updated on 2025-02-24 and refers to app.wowza.com. Treat older screen labels and hostnames as guide-specific: if your account interface differs, follow the current interface rather than searching for an identical screen.
Videos and guides for a first Wowza Video stream
1. Follow the current RTMP quick start
Start with Wowza’s Quick start for an RTMP live stream in Wowza Video, updated 2025-02-24. It is the clearest fit if your goal is to send an OBS feed into the hosted service. OBS is the encoder/source in this workflow; Wowza supplies the receiving service and connection details.

2. Create the stream and copy its connection details
- Sign in to your Wowza Video account and create a live stream using the current account interface.
- Copy the generated connection details. You will need the server address and stream name or key, as well as any source authentication details shown for your stream.
- In OBS, open Settings → Stream, choose a custom service/server option, and enter the Wowza server address and stream name or key. Enter source credentials where the Wowza setup calls for them.
- Start the live stream in Wowza first, then click Start Streaming in OBS. The sequence matters: the Wowza guide has you start the receiving stream before you start the encoder feed.
- Check the preview and then the hosted playback page. If the preview does not appear, use the connection checks below before changing unrelated OBS settings.
For an older, more expansive walkthrough of this same hosted workflow, Wowza’s Legacy getting-started guide covers OBS/RTMP, the hosted page, and stopping the stream. Its interface references may not match the current account UI.
3. Stop the stream when you finish
Stop the live stream in Wowza Video when the event ends; do not assume that stopping OBS alone ends every billable service state. The Legacy guide says transcoding charges can accrue after a stream is started even when it has no active input. It also says idle streams stop automatically after 20 minutes, but that is a statement in a 2024 Legacy guide, not a current billing guarantee. Check Wowza’s current billing guidance before relying on that behavior. The current quick-start material is at Quick live stream with Wowza Video.

Videos and guides for a first Streaming Engine stream
Choose a trial source that fits your setup
The current Wowza Streaming Engine trial page offers several ways to provide a source: webcam over WebRTC, an already-running simulated stream, FFmpeg, or OBS. You do not need a webcam for every first-stream path; the simulated stream is an option if you want to explore without camera hardware. For the Docker Compose route and its source choices, use Wowza’s Docker Compose trial guide.
For an OBS-based first stream
Wowza’s developer walkthrough, Setting Up Your First Live Stream with Wowza Streaming Engine, was published on 2025-11-12. It is a useful guided route for a first Engine stream, especially if you want to understand how OBS acts as a source publisher. Wowza author Don Kianian describes OBS as “the easiest way to create a source stream” in that walkthrough. The article also combines Engine with Flowplayer in a local Docker proof of concept, so it is more developer-oriented than a basic hosted Wowza Video tutorial.

For installation or Manager orientation
Use the Engine installation and configuration guide for the target operating system, then refer to the getting-started documentation index for the next steps. The installation page was updated 2026-07-24 and notes that version 4.9.5 adds support for ARM-based Linux executables. Requirements and version support can change, so check the current installation page for your operating system rather than relying on an old tutorial’s prerequisites.
Wowza’s Streaming Engine Manager Basics and Live Stream Set Up is a conceptual interface orientation, but it dates to 2020-02-06. Use it to understand the general Manager workflow, not as a promise that today’s labels or screens are identical.

Check the connection before troubleshooting the video
For Engine, confirm the server and source configuration before repeatedly changing encoder quality settings. Wowza’s installation guide covers system and firewall checks; its live-source connection guide, updated 2026-09-17, explains source connection requirements. RTMP- and RTSP-based Engine sources require a source username and password by default, according to that guide.
- No incoming stream appears: check that the server URL, application, stream name/key, and protocol match the values expected by the Wowza configuration.
- Authentication fails: verify the source username and password for Engine RTMP/RTSP publishing; do not assume the stream key is the only credential.
- The encoder connects but playback fails: confirm that the stream is visible in Engine Manager, then check that the playback URL/path is configured for the application you published to.
- Connection times out: review host firewall and network access against the current installation guide for the protocols and ports your setup uses.
- You are following a screen-by-screen video but cannot find a control: check its publication or update date. Manager Basics is from 2020 and the Wowza Video Legacy guide was updated in 2024; use current product documentation where their UI details differ.
For Wowza Video with OBS, verify that the correct custom server, stream name/key, and any required source credentials were copied from the same live stream, and confirm that the Wowza stream was started before OBS.

Which tutorial path should you follow?
- You want the fewest server-administration steps: follow the Wowza Video RTMP quick start and use OBS as the encoder.
- You want to run or evaluate the media server: follow the Streaming Engine trial path that matches your environment, such as Docker Compose, and choose OBS, FFmpeg, simulated video, or webcam WebRTC as the source.
- You want a video specifically about OBS publishing to Engine: use the 2025 Wowza developer walkthrough, while keeping in mind its local Docker and Flowplayer context.
- You want a webcam demonstration: select the WebRTC webcam route on the Engine trial page; it is one option, not a prerequisite for getting started.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep a YouTube channel live 24/7 using uploaded videos rather than a camera, StreamNeo is a different kind of service from Wowza’s live-source workflows: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops the uploaded video from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. Each slot streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly service is $9.99 per month. Start your free StreamNeo day.
