You cannot make a PayPal chargeback impossible with a “no refunds” notice, screenshots, or a particular tipping setting. For US PayPal accounts, donations are listed as ineligible for Seller Protection. The practical approach is to understand the limits, keep evidence tied to each transaction, and respond promptly through the process named in PayPal’s notice.
What PayPal protection does—and does not—cover
PayPal’s US Seller Protection terms, last updated January 26, 2026, list “Donations, including payments received as crowdfunding or crowdlending” among transactions that are ineligible. Ordinary stream tips should therefore not be described as automatically covered by Seller Protection. Eligibility is assessed under the applicable terms and transaction details; check the specific transaction in your PayPal account rather than inferring coverage from a public tip page or platform integration.
A chargeback is not the same as a PayPal dispute. In a card chargeback, the card issuer handles the case. PayPal may collect information from you to support a response, but the issuer decides the chargeback outcome. PayPal’s chargeback guidance says response deadlines are strict. Follow the deadline and instructions in the notice for that transaction; there is no safe universal deadline to assume.
Seller Protection and optional Chargeback Protection tools are conditional programs, not a blanket promise that a donation or tip cannot be reversed. PayPal’s Online Payment Services Agreement sets requirements and limits for eligible chargeback protection tools. Verify the specific account offer, transaction status, and current terms before relying on them.

What to do when a chargeback notice arrives
- Read the notice and identify the route. Check whether PayPal is asking for information in a PayPal dispute or relaying an issuer chargeback. Use the Resolution Center or other route specified in the notice. For an unauthorized-transaction matter, PayPal directs sellers to open the matter in the Resolution Center and upload the requested information; for a card chargeback, follow the chargeback instructions.
- Note the reason code and deadline. Reasons may include an unauthorized payment, service not rendered, duplicate payment, or credit not processed. The reason determines which facts and records are relevant. Do not wait until the final day or assume you can add evidence later.
- Collect records linked to this payment. Save the PayPal transaction ID and details, relevant chat logs, and a VOD clip or screenshot showing the tip in context. Streamlabs lists chat logs and VODs or screenshots as useful material for its support process.
- Add fulfillment records only when relevant. If the payment included a promised service or digital item, gather evidence of what was promised and whether it was fulfilled or accessed. PayPal gives examples for intangible goods and services such as system logs, delivery records, download history, and platform screenshots. These records do not make an ineligible donation eligible, but they may be relevant to the specific allegation.
- Submit a concise, reason-specific response. Explain the timeline and attach clear records that address the stated reason. Send them through the route named in the notice and retain copies of what you submit.
Build a transaction evidence routine before a dispute
Keep a practical record for each tip rather than relying on memory or a single screenshot. Where available, retain the transaction ID and details, the chat around the tip, and a timestamped VOD segment or screenshot. If you offered a deliverable or service in exchange, keep the description and evidence of fulfillment or access with the transaction record.
- Limit saved chat and video material to what is relevant to the payment and any promised deliverable.
- Keep records organized so the transaction ID can be matched to the right chat, VOD, and fulfillment information.
- Use secure storage and limit access to records that may contain personal or payment-related details.
- Do not treat screenshots, a “donations are non-refundable” disclaimer, or a platform’s tip history as a guarantee against a cardholder challenge.
Streamlabs and PayPal: what the setup changes
Streamlabs documents a PayPal tipping setup in which tips are processed directly through PayPal, not held by Streamlabs. For a payment or chargeback issue, Streamlabs recommends contacting PayPal with the transaction ID. Streamlabs logs or support may help you document the case, but the PayPal dispute remains subject to PayPal’s process and, for an issuer chargeback, the issuer’s decision. Streamlabs also documents an optional PayPal Chargeback Protection setup for qualifying credit-card tips. Its guide says creators need a PayPal Business account for credit-card tipping and must enable tipper-detail collection in Streamlabs for the described data transfer. Extra tipper fields can add friction, so explain why you request them and check current settings and terms in both services before enabling the feature. The guide describes specified unbranded credit- and debit-card transactions where enabled and eligible; it does not establish blanket coverage for every tip.
Streamlabs’ guide, updated July 22, 2025, reports a 0.40% fee per covered transaction and a monthly cap for the setup it describes, and notes that Mexico was in limited rollout at that time. These feature details can change. Confirm current availability, fees, caps, and eligibility in your own account and the current PayPal terms before treating them as applicable. Prevent avoidable confusion without promising immunity
- Label a payment request clearly as a tip or donation and describe any reward or deliverable accurately.
- Do not promise that a disclaimer, account setting, or protection feature prevents a dispute or guarantees a refund decision.
- If you use a platform integration, understand which service processes the payment and where its transaction ID and notices appear.
- There is no authoritative chargeback-rate statistic established here for stream donations; do not use an unsupported industry percentage to estimate your risk.
