Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →To fix a capture-card problem in Streamlabs Desktop, first check that the failing source is a Video Capture Device, then identify whether the problem is a missing device, no picture, stuttering video, poor image quality, or missing audio. Close other apps that may be using the card, select the correct device, and troubleshoot video and audio separately. A Game Capture black screen is a different issue and needs a different set of checks.
Start with the source and symptom
In Streamlabs Desktop, a capture card usually appears as a Video Capture Device source. Game Capture, Window Capture, and desktop audio are separate sources; fixes for one do not necessarily apply to another.
- Card missing from the source list: check whether another app is holding it and whether the correct device entry is selected.
- Card is selected but the picture is black or absent: check the signal path and the device-specific setup.
- Picture appears but stutters: check the selected device and buffering.
- Picture quality is poor: inspect the card’s own software and confirm the input format before changing resolution.
- No sound: check the capture source and mixer, then distinguish captured audio from what you hear through monitoring.
Streamlabs’ capture-card troubleshooting guide was last updated April 22, 2025. Its labels, drivers, and device-specific directions may change, so confirm instructions for your exact card and setup.
Fix a capture card that is missing or unavailable
- Close competing software. Exit the capture card’s vendor utility and any other streaming or recording app that might have the card open. Streamlabs advises, “Close out of any other software that could be using the device.” If the device remains unavailable and a hidden process may still hold it, restart the computer.
- Remove duplicate device instances. Streamlabs recommends removing the capture-card source from all scenes, adding it in one scene, then using Add from existing to reuse that source in other scenes. This avoids creating competing instances of the same device.
- Select the actual card. Open the Video Capture Device source properties and choose the capture card or its correct vendor-driver entry. Similar names can refer to unrelated devices. Some models require a vendor utility or special device entry; follow directions for your specific model. Streamlabs’ instruction for the 4K60 Pro is model-specific, not a general rule for all cards.
- Check the signal path. Confirm that the console or second computer is connected to the card’s input as intended, and that the card is connected to the streaming computer through its supported interface. Verify the relevant input is active on the source device.
- Use the card maker’s support resources if needed. If a driver or utility reinstall is warranted, get it from the manufacturer’s official support page and check the model before installing. Streamlabs points users to AVerMedia, Elgato, and Razer resources; for Magewell or Blackmagic devices, its guide describes reinstalling through Device Manager. Vendor pages and procedures can change.
USB-connected Elgato cards
For USB-connected Elgato cards, Streamlabs suggests trying Windows’ High Performance power mode and disabling USB selective suspend. These are model-context troubleshooting steps, not prerequisites for every capture card.
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Fix a capture card with no video
- Confirm the source type. Check that the source is the card’s Video Capture Device, not Game Capture or Window Capture.
- Confirm device selection. In the source properties, select the actual card or its correct vendor device entry. If the card is missing entirely, follow the unavailable-device checks above.
- Trace the signal. Check the console or computer output, the cable path into the capture card, and the card’s connection to the streaming computer. Use the card maker’s model-specific setup directions where the input or utility is unusual.
- Check platform settings only when relevant. For PS4 gameplay capture, Streamlabs says to disable HDCP at Settings > System. This is a PS4-specific direction; do not treat it as a universal capture-card fix.
Fix stuttering or poor-quality capture-card video
If the video stutters
- Open the Video Capture Device properties and confirm the selected device is the intended capture card.
- Try setting Buffering to Disable in the source properties. Streamlabs presents this as a troubleshooting option, not a guaranteed cure.
- If the problem continues, check that the card, input source, and selected capture format are compatible. Use the manufacturer’s guidance for the exact model rather than assuming every card supports the same formats.
If an Elgato picture looks poor
Streamlabs’ image-quality suggestions are Elgato-oriented. Close Streamlabs, then inspect the Elgato software’s Quality setting and set it to Best if available. Check any standard-definition conversion or stretch options. If the input and card support it, try a custom 1920×1080 resolution in the relevant settings. Do not force that resolution if the source signal or card cannot provide it.
Fix capture-card audio that is not being picked up
- Confirm the source is producing sound. Check the console or computer’s audio output and the capture card’s intended audio connection.
- Watch the Streamlabs mixer. Check whether the capture-card audio channel’s meter moves when sound plays, and make sure the channel is not muted.
- Inspect source audio properties. In the Video Capture Device properties, check Audio Output Mode and any custom audio-device selection. The correct choice depends on the card and routing in use.
- Separate capture from monitoring. If the mixer meter moves but you cannot hear the sound, capture is reaching Streamlabs; check the Windows playback device and Streamlabs’ Audio Monitoring Device. Monitoring controls what you hear, not whether audio is being captured. Enabling Monitor and Output can create an echo if the same sound is also heard through another route.
- Apply console routing advice only to a matching setup. Streamlabs notes that a USB-only PS4 headset cannot send its audio through the capture card, and describes changing PS4 output to TV or AV amplifier for supported headset configurations. Its Xbox One party-chat output setting applies to that console context. Headset wiring and console menus vary, so do not apply either direction to unrelated setups.
If Game Capture is black, troubleshoot Game Capture instead
If the failed source is Game Capture rather than the card’s Video Capture Device, use the separate Streamlabs Game Capture guidance. Its suggested checks include deleting and re-adding the source, restarting Streamlabs as administrator, disabling third-party overlays, updating software and drivers, and trying borderless or window capture. These steps address a game-capture black screen; they do not diagnose a missing or black capture-card input.

Common symptoms and next checks
| Symptom | Likely area to check | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| Card does not appear or is unavailable | Another app using it, duplicate scene sources, or wrong device entry | Close competing apps, use one shared source instance, and select the card’s actual device entry. |
| Card appears but has no picture | Source type, device selection, signal path, or platform-specific setting | Verify Video Capture Device, connections, and only the relevant platform instructions. |
| Picture stutters | Device selection or source buffering | Confirm the selected card and try Buffering set to Disable. |
| Picture quality is poor | Card software settings or unsupported input/resolution choice | For applicable Elgato setups, inspect quality and conversion settings; use only a supported resolution. |
| Mixer meter moves, but no sound in headphones | Monitoring or playback output | Check the Windows playback device and Streamlabs Audio Monitoring Device. |
| Game source is black, card source is not involved | Game Capture configuration | Use the Game Capture troubleshooting steps, not capture-card audio or signal-path fixes. |
