URL2PNG’s readily discoverable WordPress plugin is a legacy listing last updated in 2014, so treat it as an option to test—not as a confirmed modern WordPress solution.

For the custom route, the security recommendation to sign requests server-side is an implementation pattern, not a URL2PNG-certified WordPress recipe.
Build a URL2PNG v6 request
The documented URL format is https://api.url2png.com/v6/{APIKEY}/{TOKEN}/png/?{query_string}. URL2PNG says the API key is assigned during signup and begins with “P”; the token is the MD5 hash of the entire query string and the secret key. The target website URL must be URL-encoded.
The signing contract makes exact string construction important: build the final query string once, use that same string when calculating the token and when sending the request, and follow URL2PNG’s encoding and parameter-order guidance. If the signed text differs from the transmitted query string, the signature may not validate. Consult the URL2PNG API guide for the exact current signing procedure and parameter syntax before deployment.

Capture options useful for thumbnails

These defaults and options are from URL2PNG’s current API documentation at the time of writing; check the guide for the exact query syntax and current behavior. A 30-day TTL may suit stable pages, while pages that change frequently may need a shorter cache period or a deliberate refresh using unique.
Render the screenshot in WordPress
Recommended pattern for a new integration
- Keep credentials on the server. Store the API key and secret in server-side configuration or an appropriately protected plugin setting. Do not embed the secret in a public page, JavaScript, or an image URL exposed to visitors.
- Construct and sign the request server-side. Encode the target URL and all parameters according to the current URL2PNG v6 guide. Calculate the token from the complete query string and secret, ensuring the exact signed query string is the one sent.
- Render the resulting image URL. In the appropriate WordPress template or plugin code, output an image element whose source points to the generated URL. Escape values using WordPress’s context-appropriate escaping functions; do not concatenate untrusted editor input directly into markup.
- Test in staging. Check representative pages, thumbnail dimensions, pages that load assets late, and the refresh behavior before putting the integration on a live site.
The URL2PNG sources establish the API contract, but do not document a supported modern WordPress plugin implementation, where a site should store credentials, or a preferred caching design. Those details must be designed and tested for your site.

Legacy plugin function
The URL2PNG Screenshots directory listing describes the theme function getScreenshot('Website URL', WIDTH, HEIGHT, IMAGETAG, CLASS). The example indicates that setting the fourth argument to true returns an image tag. Because the listing’s compatibility information is historical, install and test the plugin on a staging copy before relying on it with a current WordPress release.
The listing documents a theme function, not a shortcode. WordPress supports shortcodes as a general mechanism for plugin developers to insert dynamic content into posts and pages, but do not assume this plugin registers one. If editors need shortcode placement, a custom plugin could register a shortcode that calls your server-side integration; that would be your implementation, not a documented feature of URL2PNG Screenshots.

Cloudinary’s documented URL2PNG add-on is an alternative when the site already uses Cloudinary. It requires an account and add-on registration, and generated URLs by default need signing or eager generation unless unsigned add-on transformations are enabled. Troubleshoot common problems
- Request rejected or signature mismatch: Check that the token uses the full query string and secret as URL2PNG specifies, and that query encoding, parameter order, and the transmitted string match the signed string exactly.
- Wrong page or malformed target: Confirm the website URL is encoded as a query value and that the final request points to the intended page.
- Thumbnail is cropped: Review the viewport dimensions and whether
fullpageshould be enabled. Full-page capture attempts to include the document, while the default is off. - Image is wider than the theme layout: Set
thumbnail_max_widthto a width appropriate for the display slot. - Screenshot misses late content: Try an appropriate
delayfor pages whose visible assets or content load after document readiness. - Changes to the source page do not appear: Review the TTL and consider using
uniquewhen you need to force a fresh capture. - Plugin function or shortcode is unavailable: The legacy listing documents a theme-callable function, not a shortcode. Verify the plugin is installed and enabled, test on staging, or implement a shortcode in your own plugin.
Performance, reliability, and cost considerations
Choose cache behavior based on how often the target pages change: URL2PNG documents a default TTL of 2,592,000 seconds (30 days), and also documents a unique refresh key. Generating captures on demand can add an external request to the page-rendering path; the reviewed sources do not establish response-time figures or a recommended WordPress caching strategy, so measure behavior on your own site and decide whether to reuse or store results. The sources cited here do not establish URL2PNG pricing, so check its current service information before estimating ongoing costs.
