To start creating content on YouTube, sign in with a Google Account, create a channel, choose one clear idea for a specific viewer, and publish a first video with the equipment you already have. You can begin with a regular video or a Short; neither format guarantees growth. Make the video useful or entertaining, describe it accurately, then use YouTube Analytics to decide what to try next.
1. Choose a viewer and a video idea
Start with a person, not a niche label. Write down who you want to help or entertain and what that person should get from one video. For example, “people learning basic guitar” is more actionable than “music”: it can lead to a specific first lesson, such as changing between two chords.
Choose an idea you can explain or demonstrate clearly with the time and tools available to you. Make each upload deliver something distinct rather than stretching one idea across many nearly identical videos. YouTube advises creators to focus on videos they think will resonate with their audience rather than trying to find a secret formula for discovery. Its systems use signals that include what viewers watch or skip, watch time, likes and dislikes, “not interested” feedback, and satisfaction surveys; those signals are not a guarantee that any particular video will be recommended. YouTube’s creator guidance explains its audience-first approach.
2. Create your YouTube channel
- Sign in to YouTube with a Google Account.
- Choose Create Account and select whether the channel is for personal or business use.
- Complete the channel setup. A channel is required to publish as a creator; it also lets you upload videos, create Shorts and playlists, and comment.
You can start with a personal channel and focus on publishing; you do not need to have a complete brand identity before making a first video. YouTube’s channel-creation and creator overview is at YouTube’s creator guide.

3. Choose between a Short and a longer video
Pick the format that fits the idea and the viewing experience you want. A quick visual demonstration may work as a Short; a detailed explanation, interview, or walkthrough may need more time. You can make either one first, and the available guidance does not establish that one format consistently grows a channel faster.
| Format | How to make or upload it | Current guidance | Good fit when |
|---|---|---|---|
| Short | Record in the YouTube mobile app or upload a vertical video. | Up to 3 minutes; uploaded Shorts have a maximum resolution of 1080p, according to YouTube Help accessed October 3, 2026. | The idea is brief or works well as a vertical, mobile-first video. |
| Longer video | Use YouTube’s standard Create flow to upload a video. | The cited creator guidance does not set a general length or resolution limit for this format. | The idea needs room for context, steps, or a fuller explanation. |
Shorts view reporting has a detail worth knowing: YouTube says that, starting March 31, 2025, a view counts when a Short starts or replays without a minimum watch time. Analytics still provides “Engaged views” for comparing viewers who chose to continue watching. YouTube says YPP eligibility and Shorts ad-revenue sharing are based on engaged Shorts views. Check YouTube Help’s current Shorts guidance for platform details, which can change.

4. Record a clear, original first video
Use the equipment you have
A smartphone is enough to start, especially for Shorts. YouTube’s April 8, 2025 Shorts guide calls a smartphone the primary tool and describes a tripod for stability and a ring light for lighting as optional additions—not required purchases or tested product recommendations. Begin in a quiet, reasonably well-lit place, keep the phone stable, and make sure your voice or main subject is clear. Consider an upgrade only if you notice a specific problem your current setup cannot solve. YouTube’s Shorts setup guide gives its smartphone-first advice.
Give the video one main job
For a beginner tutorial, state what the viewer will learn, show the steps, and explain anything needed to follow along. For entertainment, establish the premise quickly and deliver on it. Avoid promising a result the video does not provide.

Set accurate expectations
Write a title, description, and thumbnail that represent what is actually in the video. These help viewers understand what they are choosing to watch; misleading packaging can set the wrong expectation. For a Short, pay particular attention to the opening seconds, when a viewer is deciding whether to continue.
5. Upload, publish, and learn from the response
- For a regular video, open YouTube’s Create flow and upload the video. For a Short, record in the mobile app or upload a vertical video that meets the current Shorts guidance.
- Add a clear title and description, and choose a thumbnail where that option is available. Check that each accurately reflects the video.
- Review the video before publishing, then publish it when you are ready.
- After it has been available long enough to gather responses, use YouTube Analytics to see how viewers are engaging and use those observations to inform your next idea.
There is no universal posting cadence established by YouTube’s cited guidance. If a schedule helps you keep creating, treat it as an experiment you can sustain—not a growth guarantee. A useful early goal is to finish a small number of videos, notice which questions or moments hold attention, and improve one element at a time.

6. Keep monetization and originality in perspective
Publishing does not automatically qualify a channel for ad revenue. YouTube’s Partner Program overview, accessed October 3, 2026, lists two full ad-revenue eligibility routes: 1,000 subscribers plus 4,000 qualified public watch hours in the previous 12 months, or 1,000 subscribers plus 10 million qualified public Shorts views in the previous 90 days. Shorts Feed watch hours do not count toward the 4,000-hour long-form threshold. These are eligibility thresholds, not earnings estimates or a promise of acceptance.
YouTube also lists policy compliance, availability of YPP in the creator’s country or region, no active Community Guidelines strikes, 2-Step Verification, access to advanced features, and an active AdSense for YouTube account among the requirements. Eligible creators apply in YouTube Studio, and YouTube reviews the channel; reaching a threshold alone does not guarantee acceptance. See YouTube’s Partner Program overview for the current rules before applying.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsMake your own material, or transform borrowed material substantially so the result is genuinely yours. YouTube’s monetization policy update of July 15, 2025 clarified that “inauthentic content” includes repetitive or mass-produced material; YouTube said this content had already been ineligible under existing rules and that the reused-content policy did not change. A recurring format is not automatically disallowed: videos can share a structure when each has materially varied substance and offers creative, educational, or other value. Review YouTube’s channel monetization policies rather than assuming a template alone determines eligibility.

Or let it run in the cloud
If you later want uploaded videos to keep a YouTube channel live around the clock, StreamNeo is a separate option—not a way to record a camera feed. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded videos from the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not need to stay on. It automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
Each slot has one always-on stream, 10 GB storage per slot pooled across active slots, 24/7 looping and playlists, and support from the StreamNeo team. Your uploaded video streams as made, up to 4K 60fps, with no re-encode and no quality tiers. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo for details, then start the free day.
