To detect visual changes on a website, save an approved screenshot as a baseline, capture the same page in the same state on later runs, and compare the new image with that baseline. Playwright Test can do this locally with toHaveScreenshot(); a changed image fails the assertion. Screenshot comparison reveals differences in rendered pixels, but it cannot tell you whether a difference is a defect or an intentional design change.

How screenshot comparison detects visual changes

A screenshot comparison, often called visual regression testing, checks whether a page looks different from an approved reference image. The reference is the baseline; each later capture is compared with it. A diff highlights changed areas, but a person or a project-specific review process must decide what those differences mean.

It checks pixels in a particular rendered state. It does not, by itself, verify that page text is correct, controls work, or the page is accessible. Add functional, text, or accessibility checks when those outcomes matter; Playwright documents text and accessibility snapshots separately from screenshot assertions. Set up a local comparison with Playwright

Playwright Test creates a reference screenshot on the first run of an assertion and compares later captures with that reference. Install and configure Playwright Test for your project first, then add a test such as this:

import { test, expect } from '@playwright/test';

test('homepage visual baseline', async ({ page }) => {
  await page.setViewportSize({ width: 1280, height: 800 });
  await page.goto('https://example.com');
  await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot('homepage.png');
});

Run the test with npx playwright test. The first run generates the expected image; subsequent runs capture the page again and fail the assertion if the result differs beyond the configured comparison limits. Review the generated reference before treating it as approved, and commit it with the related test and code so the expected appearance is versioned with the project. See the Playwright visual comparisons guide for the current workflow.

Choose useful pages and states

Start with a manageable set of pages or components whose appearance matters: for example, a landing page, a navigation menu while open, a checkout summary, or a responsive layout. Fix test data and authentication state where relevant. Decide whether the assertion should cover the viewport, a clipped region, a selected element, or the full scrollable page. Playwright’s screenshot assertion supports full-page capture and clipping. Screenshot assertion API

Keep the capture repeatable

Run baseline creation and comparison in the same environment where possible. Playwright warns that operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode can affect screenshot rendering. Differences in fonts or browser configuration can therefore create a visual diff even when the application has not meaningfully changed. Playwright visual comparisons guide

Wait for meaningful content and test data to be ready before capturing. Playwright’s screenshot assertion waits for two consecutive screenshots to match before it compares them, which helps with settling but does not make genuinely dynamic content deterministic. Use assertion options to disable animations, hide the text caret, mask selected locators, or apply a stylesheet to hide irrelevant dynamic elements. Mask or hide only content that is truly volatile; otherwise the test may conceal a regression you intended to catch. Screenshot assertion API

Capture only the area you need

A viewport screenshot keeps the test focused on what a visitor initially sees. Full-page capture can catch changes below the fold, while clipping or targeting a specific element can isolate a component. Choose the scope based on the regression you want to detect, and keep it consistent between baseline and comparison runs. Screenshot assertion API

Set comparison sensitivity and review changes

Comparison thresholds control how much pixel variation is tolerated. Playwright documents a perceived color threshold and limits such as maxDiffPixels and maxDiffPixelRatio. There is no universally correct threshold: a strict setting can flag harmless rendering variation, while a permissive one can let a real change pass. Calibrate limits against your page and environment, inspect actual diffs, and adjust only when you understand the noise or missed change involved. Playwright visual comparisons guide Screenshot assertion API

When a test fails, inspect both the expected and actual images and the highlighted diff. Classify the cause as an unintended regression, an intentional interface change, or capture instability. If a change is intentional, update the reference with npx playwright test --update-snapshots, inspect the new image, and commit the baseline update with the code change. Do not reflexively accept every failed screenshot: doing so can normalize a defect into the new expected state. Playwright visual comparisons guide

Why screenshot tests are flaky—and how to reduce noise

  • Different rendering environments: Run reference and comparison captures with aligned operating systems, browser versions, fonts, settings, and headless configuration.
  • Animations or transitions: Disable animations in the assertion when motion is not what the test covers.
  • Changing content: Wait for required data, then mask or hide irrelevant timestamps, rotating content, or other volatile regions.
  • Unstable page readiness: Wait for meaningful content or a relevant selector rather than relying only on navigation completion.
  • Unclear capture scope: Keep viewport size and the choice of viewport, full page, clip, or element consistent.
  • Overly strict or loose comparison: Inspect diffs and tune documented thresholds for the project rather than borrowing a sample value as a universal rule.

Playwright provides screenshot controls for animation, masks, full-page capture, and stylesheets, but none can compensate for a test that captures different application states on different runs. Screenshot assertion API

Local Playwright or hosted visual review?

For a small or repository-centered workflow, Playwright’s local assertion keeps expected screenshots with the test project and fails when a comparison changes. If a team needs shared review of visual diffs and broader browser coverage, Percy is a hosted visual-testing option. BrowserStack describes Percy as capturing screenshots across browsers and responsive widths, comparing them with approved baselines, highlighting differences, and integrating with CI and review workflows. Percy overview

Workflow How changes are handled When it fits
Playwright local assertions Stored references are compared by the test assertion; a changed screenshot fails the test. Teams that want local assertions and repository-managed expectations.
Percy hosted review Visual changes are presented for review against approved baselines. A Percy run may pass while changes await review unless the pipeline is configured to fail on unapproved changes. Teams that want hosted collaboration and visual review integrated into CI.

These are different workflows, not a price or plan comparison. Percy is a visual-review workflow rather than an unattended service that watches any arbitrary website. Its Playwright integration guide explains configuring the pipeline to fail on unapproved changes. Percy and Playwright guide

Troubleshooting common comparison failures

The screenshot assertion fails after a harmless-looking change

Open the expected, actual, and diff images. Check first for environment drift, then for animation, dynamic content, or a changed viewport. If the visual difference is intentional, update the snapshot only after reviewing it; if not, stabilize the test or fix the page.

The test passes but a visual defect remains

Check whether the changed region is masked or hidden, whether the comparison limits are too permissive, and whether the chosen screenshot scope includes the affected area. Also consider whether the defect is functional or textual rather than visual and needs a separate assertion.

Updating snapshots creates many changes

Do not approve them as a batch without inspection. Confirm the browser and operating-system environment, identify shared causes such as fonts or rendering settings, and review representative diffs before updating references. Keep intentional baseline changes alongside the relevant application change.

Performance and maintenance considerations

Screenshot suites add browser navigation, rendering, capture, and image-comparison work to a test run. Keep coverage representative rather than duplicating nearly identical states, and focus captures on high-value pages or components. Full-page screenshots cover more content than viewport captures; use them when below-the-fold appearance matters.

Reliability depends on maintaining stable test data, capture conditions, and approved references as the application evolves. A screenshot suite is most useful when diffs are reviewed and snapshots are updated deliberately, not when failures are routinely ignored. Pair it with functional and accessibility checks for properties that pixels cannot establish.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does screenshot comparison prove that a website works correctly?

No. It identifies rendered visual differences at the captured state; use separate functional, text, or accessibility checks for those properties.

Can I compare screenshots across different operating systems or browsers?

You can, but rendering differences may create diffs unrelated to an application change. For reliable regression checks, align the environments used to create and compare baselines.
