Put the page’s Open Graph metadata in the HTML response before client-side JavaScript runs. A browser may display a fully rendered page even when a link-preview crawler sees only an empty app shell. Use server-side rendering, static generation, or prerendering to return page-specific metadata up front, then inspect the raw response and validate the URL on the platform where the preview is missing.

Why a JavaScript page can fail to produce a link preview

Your browser runs the application’s JavaScript and can show content added after the initial page load. Link-preview crawlers do not all work the same way. Google documents its own crawl, render, and index process, but that does not mean a social network or messaging app runs the page’s JavaScript. Google Search Central cautions: “Keep in mind that server-side or pre-rendering is still a great idea because it makes your website faster for users and crawlers, and not all bots can run JavaScript.” Google Search Central’s JavaScript SEO guide

The key distinction is the initial HTML response versus the later, JavaScript-rendered DOM. If the response contains only an app shell and scripts, and the application inserts the sharing tags afterward, a crawler that does not execute that JavaScript may have no title, description, or image to use.

Check the HTML response for the exact share URL

  1. Fetch the same URL you are sharing, including its path and any relevant query string, and inspect the returned HTML.
  2. Look inside the document’s <head> for page-specific title, description, canonical share URL, and Open Graph image tags.
  3. Compare that source with the browser’s rendered DOM. If the tags appear only after JavaScript runs, change how the page is rendered for crawlers.
  4. Confirm that the URL and image can be fetched publicly by the intended preview crawler. A login or other access restriction can prevent a preview.

Google’s ability to render JavaScript describes Google’s pipeline, not every preview service’s behavior. Test the exact sharing platform where the problem occurs.

Add page-specific Open Graph metadata to the document head

The Open Graph Protocol identifies og:title, og:type, og:image, and og:url as its four required basic properties. og:description is optional but generally useful. Open Graph Protocol

<head>
  <title>Page title</title>
  <meta property="og:title" content="Page title">
  <meta property="og:type" content="article">
  <meta property="og:url" content="https://example.com/article">
  <meta property="og:image" content="https://example.com/images/article-card.jpg">
  <meta property="og:description" content="A concise description of this page.">
</head>

Replace the example values with the actual title, type, share URL, image URL, and description for each shareable route. Use an absolute image URL that the crawler can fetch. Keep one correct set of page-specific Open Graph tags in the response: the protocol says the first declaration takes precedence when a property appears more than once, so duplicate tags can lead to unexpected metadata.

Choose a way to return crawler-ready HTML

Server-side rendering

Generate the route’s metadata on the server and include it in the HTML response. This is a strong default for dynamic pages when your framework and hosting setup support it.

Static generation

Build HTML with the correct metadata ahead of time for routes whose content can be generated in advance. This suits pages whose share metadata does not need to be assembled on every request.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Prerendering

If changing the application to server-side rendering or static generation is impractical, a prerendering layer can produce rendered HTML for crawlers. It introduces an additional service or infrastructure dependency, so verify that it covers the relevant routes and returns their correct metadata. Prerender’s Open Graph guide describes this approach.

These approaches are alternatives, not a universal ranking. Choose based on whether each route needs unique metadata, how frequently its content changes, what your framework and host support, and how much operational complexity you can accept.

Check crawler access, images, and platform-specific requirements

  • Public access: The intended crawler must be able to fetch the shared page and its image. Microsoft says Teams can share an authenticated URL but will not create its preview; that is a Teams-specific example, not a rule for every platform. Microsoft Teams sharing guidance
  • Useful fallback fields: Teams accepts standard HTML title and description fields or Open Graph equivalents. Its guidance recommends a thumbnail or both title and description, and says to include all three for best results. Treat that as Teams-specific guidance.
  • Route consistency: Ensure the HTML response’s title, description, canonical share URL, and image belong to the exact route being shared—not just the site homepage.
  • One unambiguous declaration: Remove stale or duplicate Open Graph properties so the first declaration does not override the value you intended.

Validate the preview on the destination platform

  1. Use the sharing platform’s own debugger or preview workflow, where available, on the exact URL.
  2. Compare the platform’s fetched title, description, and image with the raw HTML response.
  3. If the response is correct but an old card remains, investigate caching or a platform-specific refresh mechanism. Cache durations and refresh behavior are not uniform across platforms.
  4. Repeat validation on other platforms where the link matters. One platform’s validator does not prove every other service will display the same card.

Or skip the browser setup

If you need a screenshot of the page as a visual check while diagnosing the rendered result, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. One GET request returns an image or PDF; the API is not a substitute for putting Open Graph tags in the initial HTML response or for validating a platform’s own preview.

For example, this cURL request captures the URL as a WebP image. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for options.

Troubleshooting missing or incorrect previews

The preview has no title, description, or image

Inspect the raw response, not only the browser DOM. Add the required page-specific Open Graph fields to the initial HTML, and confirm that the image is publicly fetchable.

The preview shows the wrong page’s metadata

Check whether every route returns its own metadata. Remove duplicate tags, since the Open Graph Protocol gives precedence to the first declaration of a property.

The page works in Google but not in a chat or social app

Do not infer that another crawler executes JavaScript because Google can render it. Return metadata in the initial response and test using the affected platform’s workflow.

The page is behind a login

Make the shared content and image available to the intended crawler if you expect a public preview. Teams explicitly does not create previews for authenticated URLs, even though they can be shared.

The source is fixed but the old preview remains

Check the destination platform’s refresh or debugging mechanism, if one exists. There is no uniform cache lifetime or refresh process established across platforms.
