An encoder prepares the outgoing video; an ingest server receives it; transcoding converts it for delivery in other formats. These terms are related, but none is a substitute for another—and there is no single best setting for every platform, connection, and stream.
What does bitrate mean when streaming?
Bitrate is the amount of data sent each second. Twitch defines it as “the amount of data you send to Twitch when you stream.” A higher bitrate uses more of your available upload bandwidth and may improve picture quality, but only up to a point. It cannot compensate for every limitation in the encoder, source video, network stability, or viewer’s playback conditions. Twitch Inspector glossary
Think of bitrate as the stream’s data budget, not a direct picture-size setting. If your connection cannot consistently upload the chosen bitrate, viewers may see buffering, dropped frames, or interruptions. The appropriate value depends on the platform and the rest of your setup; do not treat a recommendation for one service as universal.
What is the difference between bitrate and resolution?
Resolution describes the dimensions of the picture; bitrate describes how much data is sent per second to represent it. Labels such as 720p and 1080p refer to resolution classes. A larger picture generally needs more bitrate to preserve detail, but resolution alone does not determine the image viewers receive. Twitch notes that higher resolution requires more bitrate. YouTube’s Live API documents inbound resolution values from 240p through 2160p, plus automatic variable detection. That list documents API values; it does not guarantee that every account, platform, or viewer supports every option. YouTube Live API
What does 60 fps mean?
FPS means frames per second: how many individual images are sent each second. More frames can make motion look smoother, especially in fast-moving scenes, but they also require more encoding power and bandwidth. Resolution and frame rate are separate choices: a stream can have a large picture at a lower frame rate, or a smaller picture at a higher one.
Twitch says Full HD is typically 60 fps, but advises reducing frame rate when bandwidth or encoding power is insufficient. Treat that as Twitch guidance, not a requirement for every stream. Twitch’s glossary describes frame rate as how often animation frames are sent to Twitch. Twitch Inspector glossary Twitch Broadcasting Guidelines

What is an encoder, and what is a codec?
Encoder
An encoder is the software or device that prepares and sends your stream to a platform. In a beginner setup, streaming software often acts as the encoder; a separate hardware appliance is not necessarily involved.
Codec
A codec is the compression and decompression method used for audio or video. Twitch identifies AVC as H.264 and notes that streaming software often chooses codec details automatically. In short: the encoder is the tool doing the work, while the codec is a method it can use. Twitch Inspector glossary
What is a keyframe interval?
A keyframe interval is the spacing between keyframes in an encoded stream. Keyframes give a decoder reference images from which it can reconstruct later frames. The right setting depends on platform guidance and the workflow; Twitch warns that changing the default can make some streams hard to view on some devices. Check the current settings recommended by the service you are streaming to instead of applying one value everywhere. Twitch Inspector glossary

What is stream latency, and how is stream delay different?
Latency
Latency is the time between capturing a live moment and that moment reaching a viewer. Some delay comes from network transmission and processing. Lower latency can help when the creator needs to interact with viewers in near-real time, but the available choices depend on the platform and delivery method.
Stream delay
Stream delay is extra time deliberately added in streaming software. It is different from unavoidable network and processing latency. A deliberate delay can be useful in some broadcasts, but it makes an already-lagged interaction take longer. Twitch Inspector glossary
What is an ingest server or ingest address?
An ingest server is the platform endpoint where your outgoing stream enters the service. Streaming software sends the encoded stream to that address; it is not the server from which every viewer necessarily receives the finished video. YouTube’s Live API documents primary and backup ingest addresses, while Twitch describes its ingest server as the place the stream enters its network. YouTube Live API Twitch Inspector glossary

What is transcoding?
Transcoding is platform-side conversion of an incoming stream into other output formats. YouTube says it transcodes live streams to produce formats for viewers using different devices and networks. This does not mean every broadcast or account is guaranteed to offer every quality choice to every viewer. YouTube encoder guidance
What is an ingestion protocol?
An ingestion protocol is the method used to send a stream to a platform. Protocols can differ in codec support, suitability for resolution, security, and latency. In YouTube’s comparison, HLS and DASH have higher latency while supporting advanced codecs and high-resolution streaming. The appropriate protocol depends on the platform and what the stream needs; protocols are not interchangeable labels for picture quality. YouTube protocol comparison
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How do the main streaming settings work together?
| Term or choice | What it describes | What it affects |
|---|---|---|
| Resolution | Picture dimensions, such as a 720p or 1080p class | Picture detail and the bitrate needed to carry it |
| Frame rate | Frames sent each second | Motion smoothness, encoding power, and bandwidth needs |
| Bitrate | Data sent each second | Upload bandwidth use and the amount of data available to represent the stream |
| Encoder and codec | The tool preparing the stream and its compression method | How the stream is encoded and whether the platform supports the chosen format |
| Latency and protocol | End-to-end delay and the method of sending the stream | How quickly viewers receive the broadcast and which features or formats are supported |
| Ingest and transcoding | Where the platform receives the stream and how it converts it for delivery | The path from the creator’s outgoing stream to viewer-facing formats |
These axes interact. Raising resolution or frame rate can increase resource demands; the encoder, content, bandwidth stability, protocol, and playback device also matter. Twitch warns that higher resolution and frame rate raise requirements and that mismatched settings can contribute to playback problems. Choose settings using the destination platform’s current guidance and the limits of your own connection and equipment—not a universal “best” preset. Twitch Broadcasting Guidelines

How does a 24/7 pre-recorded YouTube stream fit these terms?
A 24/7 pre-recorded stream plays uploaded video as a YouTube live broadcast; it is not a camera feed. For a do-it-yourself workflow, an encoder or streaming program sends the video to YouTube through an ingest address using a stream key. The terms above still apply: the video has a resolution and frame rate, the outgoing stream has a bitrate and codec, and delivery can involve latency and platform transcoding. Check YouTube’s current encoder guidance and make sure you have the rights to stream the material. YouTube encoder guidance

Quick Recap
Common streaming terms, at a glance
- Live stream: A real-time audio/video program sent from a creator to a streaming service for viewers. Its exact path depends on the software, platform, and setup.
- Upload bandwidth: The available capacity for sending data from the creator’s connection. The stream’s bitrate consumes part of it.
- Stream key: A credential used by streaming software to identify or authorize the broadcast at the platform. Treat it as private; anyone with access may be able to send a stream to your channel.
- Device compatibility: Whether a viewer’s device and playback conditions can handle the delivered stream. Platform conversion may provide other formats, but that does not guarantee every quality choice for every viewer.
