To choose the image shown when someone shares a Blogger link, edit your theme’s HTML and add appropriate Open Graph metadata in the page’s <head>. Blogger’s documented settings do not include a dedicated social-preview-image control. The right setup depends on whether you want one image for your blog’s homepage or a different image for each post, and you must check what the published page actually outputs.

First decide which link needs an image

A link to your blog homepage and a link to an individual post are different pages. A theme-wide image rule may suit the homepage, but it can also appear on post pages unless the theme handles those pages separately. If you want a unique preview for each post, check that the post’s rendered metadata points to its intended image.

  • Homepage: Set a site-level image for the main blog URL.
  • Individual post: Use metadata that reflects that post’s image rather than assuming the homepage rule will be overridden automatically.

Blogger’s official settings help documents a search description but does not list a dedicated control for selecting a social preview image: Blogger settings.

Add Open Graph image metadata in the Blogger theme

Back up the theme

  1. Sign in to Blogger and open the blog’s dashboard.
  2. Choose Theme.
  3. Use the menu beside the theme controls and choose Back up or download a copy of the theme before editing.
  4. From the same menu, choose Edit HTML.

Blogger documents this theme-editing path and warns that authors add code at their own risk: Edit your blog’s theme HTML.

Inspect the existing head before changing it

Find the document’s <head> section and look for existing og:image metadata. Some themes already emit Open Graph tags. Do not blindly add another competing tag: duplicate or conflicting values can produce unexpected results, and social platforms may interpret them differently.

If there is no suitable existing tag, add Open Graph metadata within the head, using a direct, publicly accessible URL for the image you intend the platform to fetch. For example, the basic form is <meta property="og:image" content="https://example.com/path/image.jpg">. Replace the example URL with your own image URL. This is an implementation example, not a Blogger setting or a guarantee of how every platform will choose a preview.

Community guidance recommends Open Graph tags and includes an example of conditional metadata for a site-level image, but those examples are not official Blogger specifications: Blogger Help Community: social sharing image guidance and Blogger Help Community: homepage image example. Theme markup varies, so do not copy a conditional snippet unless you understand how it applies to your blog’s homepage and post pages.

Save and verify the published page

  1. Save the theme changes.
  2. Open the published homepage or post you plan to share.
  3. Inspect that page’s HTML source and confirm the intended og:image value appears in the head. Check that there are no unintended competing image tags.
  4. Use the destination social platform’s current preview or debugging tool, or make a test share, to see what image it fetches.

A platform can display a cached preview from an earlier crawl. A community discussion mentions cache updates but does not establish a universal refresh time: Blogger Help Community: link preview discussion. Judge the result by checking the live page metadata and the destination platform’s preview, not by assuming a fixed waiting period.

Choose a post image carefully

A Blogger Help Community answer says Blogger may use the first image in a post as its content image reference and suggests placing a preferred image first inside a noscript block. Treat that as a workaround to test on your own theme, not a guaranteed Blogger feature: Blogger Help Community: post image guidance. Blogger’s official image documentation covers adding and managing post images, not this workaround: Add images and videos to your blog.

Use only images you have permission to publish. Blogger’s image guidance prohibits unauthorized copyrighted material and content hosted elsewhere without permission. A post-specific approach also means validating the metadata on each post whose preview image matters.

What Blogger’s sharing tools do—and do not do

Blogger’s built-in share buttons are for sharing a public blog; their documentation does not say they select or set the preview image. Changing the metadata in the page is a separate task: Share your blog.

The official instructions describe general Blogger theme and dashboard workflows; they do not identify an India-only setting for social preview images. The same theme-editing approach applies to Blogger blogs generally, rather than requiring an India-specific hosting or account option.

If you need a screenshot of a page to inspect its appearance after changing the metadata, ScreenshotNeo can capture a URL through one GET request. It is a website screenshot API and MCP server; it does not set Blogger’s social preview metadata or replace the platform’s preview debugger.

ScreenshotNeo API documentation

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://your-blog.blogspot.com -o shot.webp

ScreenshotNeo removes cookie banners, newsletter popups and chat widgets before capture; bot checks, blank pages, timeouts and failed loads are not billed. Cache hits are also not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides tools for AI agents, including Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month without a card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots. See ScreenshotNeo or the API documentation. Sign up for 1,000 free screenshots a month, with no card required.
