It can keep a compatible camera powered during a long live stream, but it is not universal: check the exact camera model, coupler, power adapter, and cable requirements before buying or connecting anything.
What a dummy battery does
A dummy battery is a camera-specific DC coupler shaped to fit the camera’s battery compartment. A cable connects the coupler to an external power source, allowing a compatible camera to operate without relying on its normal in-camera battery for the session. Canon describes its DR-E6P as providing continuous power without a battery and identifies live streaming and extended sessions as uses for it. Canon DR-E6P product information.
It is not a universal battery-shaped plug. Fit and electrical requirements depend on the camera and the particular coupler. For example, Canon lists the DR-E6P for select EOS models, while Sony’s DC-C1 is listed for cameras using NP-FZ100 or NP-FW50 batteries. Check the manufacturer’s current compatibility information for your exact camera before purchasing.
How to choose and use one safely
- Identify your exact camera and battery family. Check the camera manual and the accessory maker’s current compatibility list. A similar-looking battery or a coupler listed for another body is not proof of compatibility.
- Read the coupler’s own power requirements. Confirm the allowed power source, output, connector, and cable specifications in the instructions for that exact product. Do not infer voltage, wattage, polarity, or USB behavior from another brand or model.
- Match the adapter and cable to those requirements. For instance, Sony specifies a USB Power Delivery supply rated at 65 W or higher and a 5 A USB PD cable for its DC-C1. Sony’s support table gives a different threshold for the DC-C2: 100 W or more. These figures apply to those Sony couplers, not to dummy batteries in general. - Install the coupler and route its cable without tension. Follow the camera and coupler instructions, including any provision for the cable to exit the battery compartment. Keep the cable from snagging or pulling on the coupler, since a disconnection can interrupt power.
- Test the camera before the live event. Power it on and check that it operates normally with the chosen supply. Continuous power does not guarantee an uninterrupted stream; the camera, power supply, connection, heat, and streaming setup all matter.
Power requirements vary even among products that use USB PD. Panasonic’s DMW-DCC18 instructions recommend the DMW-AC11 and specify a 9 V / 3 A USB PD output and a cable rated for 27 W or better when using a commercially available supply. Check whether your camera can run from USB instead
A camera may support operating power through its USB port, which can make a separate DC coupler unnecessary. But USB charging and USB operation are not the same: consult the manual for your exact camera to confirm whether it can be powered while turned on, what adapter and cable it needs, and whether a battery must remain installed.
Panasonic says the DC-L10 can receive power through USB-C while turned on with a battery inserted. It recommends a power adapter supporting 5 V / 3 A (15 W) and a cable rated for at least 15 W, and cautions that the battery can still lose charge depending on use and the source’s capability. Canon’s EOS R6 Mark II manual says the PD-E1 USB Power Adapter can power that camera; when external power is supplied, the battery indicator appears gray. This is model-specific guidance, not a rule for all Canon cameras. Canon EOS R6 Mark II online manual.
When weighing USB power against a coupler, compare camera compatibility, the required adapter output, cable rating and connector, whether the camera’s USB port remains available for another use, and whether you need a mains or portable supply. Sony says its DC-C2 supplies power through the battery chamber, leaving the camera’s USB-C port available for another use; verify compatibility and requirements for your own camera and coupler. Common problems and what to check
- The camera does not power on: Recheck that the coupler is listed for the exact camera, is fully seated, and is connected to a supply and cable that meet that coupler’s requirements.
- The camera loses power during a session: Check for a loose connector, a cable under tension, or a supply that does not meet the manufacturer’s stated specifications. Test the complete setup before streaming.
- A USB adapter charges the battery but does not run the camera: Charging does not establish that the camera supports operation over USB. Check the camera manual for operating-power support and any required adapter, cable, or installed battery.
- The battery indicator changes or the battery still drains: Behavior differs by camera and power source. Panasonic warns that the DC-L10’s battery charge may decrease during USB-powered operation; Canon documents a gray battery indicator when the EOS R6 Mark II receives power from the PD-E1.
