For most YouTube creators who want a free, flexible setup, OBS Studio is the better default. Choose Streamlabs Desktop if you want a guided setup with built-in alerts, overlays, and widgets, and are comfortable with an optional paid plan for extras such as multistreaming. Neither is a proven performance winner: the available sources do not provide a controlled, current comparison on identical computers and scenes.

How OBS and Streamlabs differ
OBS puts configuration and extensibility first
OBS lets you build scenes from sources such as windows, images, text, browser windows, webcams, and capture cards. It includes per-source audio filters, custom transitions, Studio Mode, Multiview, hotkeys, and support for plugins and scripts. That range is useful when you want to shape your production yourself, but it also means you may need to spend time configuring a workflow that suits you.
The OBS homepage lists OBS Studio 32.2.2, dated August 14, 2026. Its platform listing covers Windows 10/11, macOS 13.0 or newer, and Linux. Check the official OBS homepage for current downloads and platform details.
Streamlabs bundles creator tools into its desktop app
Streamlabs Desktop offers an integrated route to streaming and recording, with alerts, overlays or themes, widgets, and an app store. Its setup guidance describes signing in, importing OBS settings, choosing a theme, and adding camera, microphone, or capture sources before recording or going live. This can suit creators who want those tools close at hand; it is not proof that every creator will find the app easier.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Streamlabs says basic features are free. Ultra is optional and includes benefits such as multistreaming, VIP support, and premium overlays; multistreaming requires Ultra. Streamlabs’ public Desktop repository describes the app as built on Electron and OBS and powered by OBS. That shared technology does not mean every part of the applications behaves identically. For current feature and setup details, see Streamlabs’ support and content hub.
Which one should you choose for YouTube?
Choose OBS if you want control or use Linux
- You want free, open-source software without an optional membership tier for the core app.
- You plan to build custom scenes, use audio filters, or extend your workflow with plugins and scripts.
- You use Linux: OBS lists Linux support, while Streamlabs’ current help guidance covers Windows and macOS.
Choose Streamlabs if its integrated tools fit your workflow
- You want alerts, overlays, themes, and widgets available as part of a guided desktop setup.
- You value importing OBS settings as a starting point, rather than building every part of the setup from scratch.
- You specifically want multistreaming and consider the paid Ultra tier worthwhile. Confirm current plan details directly with Streamlabs before subscribing.
Try both if performance is the deciding factor
There is no established universal answer to whether OBS or Streamlabs uses less CPU or memory. Actual load depends on the computer, scene complexity, sources, encoding choices, and output settings. To compare fairly, use the same machine, resolution, frame rate, encoder, scene sources, and stream duration in both apps. Watch for dropped frames and encoding lag, and compare resource use during the same representative part of your broadcast. Treat that as a test of your own setup, not a general benchmark.

Operating-system and hardware considerations
OBS is the straightforward choice if you need Linux support based on the official platform listings. Streamlabs’ system-requirements guidance covers Windows and macOS and recommends 8 GB RAM as a minimum and 16 GB or more as recommended. Those are vendor guidelines, not a guarantee that a particular scene or stream will run acceptably; requirements can change. Cameras and microphones are optional sources, not prerequisites for choosing either program.

- Add your YouTube stream key once.

Nothing has to stay on at home. Your upload streams as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for uploaded videos streamed to YouTube, not live camera input. See StreamNeo, then start your free day.
Practical checks before going live
Protect your YouTube stream
- Use media and overlays you have the right to broadcast. A song or video being available online does not automatically give you permission to rebroadcast it.
- Review YouTube’s current live-streaming and copyright requirements before scheduling a stream. OBS or Streamlabs features do not grant rights to third-party content.
- Do not assume that repeated or reused material will qualify for monetization simply because it can be streamed. YouTube applies its own channel and content policies.
Check the whole signal path
- Confirm the correct YouTube account, channel, and stream key are selected before starting.
- Make a private or unlisted test where appropriate, and check video, audio, overlays, and sync from the viewer side.
- Keep a local recording or backup source if the live broadcast is important; a streaming application cannot prevent every network, hardware, or platform interruption.
Troubleshooting common choice and setup problems
You cannot install Streamlabs on Linux
Streamlabs’ current help guidance covers Windows and macOS, while OBS lists Linux. Use OBS on Linux rather than relying on repository wording that may lag the current release.

Your stream looks choppy or the app reports dropped frames
First identify whether the problem is rendering, encoding, or network delivery; these point to different causes. Reduce scene complexity or output demands for rendering or encoding trouble, and check the connection and YouTube ingest status for network trouble. Compare applications only with the same scene and settings—there is no controlled benchmark establishing a blanket winner.
You expected multistreaming in the free Streamlabs tier
Streamlabs documents multistreaming as an Ultra feature. Check the current plan terms before relying on it, since availability and plan details can change.

An alert or overlay does not appear
Check that the correct theme, widget, or browser source is enabled in the active scene, and verify that the relevant account or service is connected. Preview the scene before going live so a missing source is not discovered during the broadcast.
Cost notes
OBS is free and open source. Streamlabs offers basic features at no cost, with Ultra as an optional paid tier; its current price is not stated here, so check Streamlabs directly before deciding. Compare the value of any paid extras you will actually use, particularly multistreaming, rather than assuming either program requires a subscription for ordinary YouTube streaming. StreamNeo is a separate cloud option for looping uploaded videos, not a replacement for desktop software when you are broadcasting a live camera or computer scene.
