To multistream, send your live video to each platform either directly from your computer or through a cloud relay that forwards one incoming feed to multiple destinations. Before going live, confirm each platform’s eligibility and rules, calculate upload bandwidth for your chosen method, and test the real setup—not just an idle speed test.
Choose how to send your stream
The main choice is whether your computer sends a separate output to each destination or sends one feed to a cloud relay, which distributes it. Direct output provides more local control but can add upload and encoding demands. A relay moves the fan-out to its infrastructure, reducing the work your connection and computer must do for each additional platform, but adds a service dependency and service-specific limits.

YouTube describes both approaches and notes that a cloud service can distribute a single high-quality incoming stream. Restream likewise says its relay replicates one incoming stream rather than requiring creator-side upload bandwidth to rise per destination. Check each destination before configuring software
Simulstreaming is YouTube’s term for broadcasting simultaneously across platforms. Each destination has its own account requirements, connection details, and rules; meeting one platform’s requirements does not automatically qualify you for another.

- YouTube: The channel must be verified and live streaming enabled. YouTube says first-time activation can take at least 24 hours after the first request, so enable it before the day of your broadcast.
- Other destinations: Confirm that the account is active and in good standing, and obtain that platform’s server URL and stream key if required. Use the destination’s current instructions rather than assuming one platform’s settings apply to another.
- Agreements: Review any partner, event, or promotional agreement for exclusivity obligations in addition to public platform rules.
Requirements can change. Check the destinations’ official account and live-streaming pages when you set up or revisit a stream. YouTube’s current guide is at support.google.com/youtube/answer/16404722?hl=en-GB.
Calculate upload bandwidth for local multistreaming
When your computer sends separate outputs directly, add the target bitrates for all destinations. YouTube’s example uses 6 Mbps for one stream and 4 Mbps for another: the combined target is 10 Mbps. For that example, YouTube recommends 15–20 Mbps of upload speed for stability—about 1.5 to 2 times the combined target. This is YouTube’s planning recommendation, not a universal bitrate setting or guarantee that a connection will sustain the stream.

- Write down the target bitrate for each locally sent output, based on that destination’s current ingest guidance and your chosen resolution and frame rate.
- Add the bitrates to get the combined target. For example, 6 Mbps + 4 Mbps = 10 Mbps.
- Use YouTube’s 1.5–2× headroom recommendation as a planning check. For the 10 Mbps example, that means aiming for 15–20 Mbps upload capacity.
- Test while the computer and connection are under realistic load, then watch each platform’s stream-health indicators after going live.
A speed test measures a moment, not guaranteed sustained performance. YouTube recommends a realistic test that includes audio and video with typical movement. Shared connections and other network activity can affect stability, so test the actual setup. YouTube’s simulstreaming guide.
When a relay receives one feed
A relay changes where distribution happens: your computer sends one incoming stream to the service, which forwards it to the destinations. Restream’s own help page lists 10 Mbps as its minimum bandwidth and 25 Mbps or higher as recommended, especially for Full HD streams. Those are Restream’s vendor recommendations, not a neutral universal standard; check the provider’s current requirements. Restream Help Center.

Configure and test the outputs
Whether you use a local encoder or a relay, configure each destination with its own current ingest details and settings. A setting that works for one platform may not be suitable for another. Confirm the target bitrate, resolution, and frame rate against each destination’s current guidance, and check the stream health after starting.
If you use OBS, its transcoding documentation explains that transcoding creates feeds at different resolutions, frame rates, and bitrates, and that availability depends on the platform. The page is dated 2021, so do not rely on it for current platform entitlements or assume every destination will provide transcoding. OBS Project: Transcodes and transcoding.

For a cloud relay, follow the provider’s current OBS connection workflow and verify the relay’s destination and plan limits. Restream documents an OBS workflow at Restream’s OBS guide; its instructions describe its own service, not every relay.

Twitch’s Terms of Service permit simultaneous streaming to another live platform only if the listed conditions are met. In practical terms, preserve a Twitch experience at least as good as the experience elsewhere, do not direct Twitch viewers away to the concurrent stream, and do not use third-party services to merge activity from other platforms into the Twitch stream. Twitch’s terms specifically include merging chat or other features as an example of combining activity.

- Give Twitch viewers an experience that is no worse than the concurrent experience, including through your engagement with Twitch chat.
- Do not encourage the Twitch community to leave Twitch to watch the simulcast elsewhere. The FAQ distinguishes identifying that you are present elsewhere from actively telling viewers to leave Twitch for the concurrent broadcast.
- Do not use a third-party tool to combine other-platform activity, such as chat, into the Twitch stream during the simulcast.
- Check your own agreement for additional exclusivity obligations; public platform guidance cannot determine what a private contract requires.
Read the current Twitch Terms of Service and Twitch Simulcasting Guidelines FAQ before broadcasting, especially if your status or agreement has changed.
Troubleshoot common multistream problems
- One or more streams buffer or drop frames: For locally sent outputs, compare the combined target bitrate with available upload capacity and check for other traffic on the connection. Retest under realistic load and monitor the destination’s stream-health indicators. A relay may reduce creator-side fan-out bandwidth, but it cannot guarantee a stable incoming connection.
- The stream is unstable despite a good speed-test result: The test may not reflect sustained upload under live audio and video, typical movement, or shared-network use. Test the actual setup while it is under load.
- A destination will not accept the stream: Recheck that live streaming is enabled for the account and that you are using that destination’s current server URL and stream key. Do not reuse another platform’s ingest details.
- One destination looks different from another: Check each platform’s configured output and available transcoding options. Transcoding availability depends on the platform; do not assume matching quality options everywhere.
- Twitch chat or viewers are handled differently across platforms: Keep Twitch engagement on Twitch and avoid merging other-platform activity into the Twitch stream. Review Twitch’s current terms and any applicable exclusivity agreement.
