In OBS, check whether your laptop supports Intel Quick Sync, NVIDIA NVENC, or AMD AMF, then try the compatible hardware encoder instead of x264. Hardware encoding shifts video-encoding work away from the CPU, but it cannot eliminate load from a demanding game, complex scenes, heat, or other bottlenecks.
Which streaming software is best for a low-end laptop?
Choose OBS Studio if you want direct access to scenes and encoder settings and can spend a little time configuring them. Streamlabs Desktop is a reasonable alternative if you prefer an onboarding-oriented workflow. Neither app guarantees smooth streaming on a laptop just because it installs or meets a listed minimum requirement.
There is no controlled laptop benchmark in the available official sources that establishes which app uses less CPU. The practical difference for your setup is likely to depend on the encoder you select, your game or other capture sources, overlays, plugins, and programs running at the same time.
| Option | When it makes sense | What to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| OBS Studio | You want configurable scenes and direct encoder controls. | OBS warns that system compatibility does not guarantee a machine can handle a particular streaming or recording workload. OBS system requirements |
| Streamlabs Desktop | You prefer a more guided setup workflow. | Its requirements page lists Windows 11 or macOS 12+ and 8 GB RAM as minimums, while noting that demanding games, animated overlays, plugins, and other running programs can require more. The page was last updated April 8, 2026. Streamlabs system requirements |
Treat those Streamlabs figures as minimum system requirements, not a prediction of CPU use or a promise that a particular stream will run smoothly. OBS’s requirements make the same broader point: compatibility alone does not establish workload capacity.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Why encoder choice matters more than the app label
OBS generally recommends a compatible hardware encoder over its x264 software encoder for performance because the hardware path moves encoding work from the CPU to a specialized component. OBS lists Intel Quick Sync, NVIDIA NVENC, and AMD AMF as hardware encoding options; the choices available depend on your laptop’s graphics hardware and drivers. OBS hardware encoding guide
- Quick Sync: Try it if your Intel-based laptop and drivers expose it. Intel’s streaming guidance suggests considering Quick Sync when operating near minimum hardware capability. Intel’s streaming guide
- NVENC: Use it if the laptop’s NVIDIA graphics hardware and installed drivers make it available in your streaming app.
- AMF: Use it if the laptop’s AMD graphics hardware and drivers make it available.
- x264: This is software encoding, so encoding work runs on the CPU. It may be necessary if a suitable hardware encoder is unavailable, but it is not the first choice when reducing CPU load is your priority.
Hardware encoding is not cost-free and does not fix every source of lag. The game may still be taxing the graphics processor; scene rendering, capture, drivers, laptop temperatures, or network conditions can also cause trouble.

How to configure and test a laptop stream
- Check what your laptop exposes. Open your streaming app’s output or encoder settings and inspect the available encoder choices. If a hardware option is missing, check the laptop’s graphics hardware and drivers; do not assume every laptop supports every encoder listed in a guide.
- Start with OBS Studio if you need the most direct control. Download it from the official OBS download page. The page lists distinct Intel and Apple Silicon installers; check the current release and choose the installer that matches your computer.
- Select the compatible hardware encoder. In OBS, open Settings > Output and inspect the encoder option for streaming. Choose an available Quick Sync, NVENC, or AMF option if CPU headroom is the priority. If none is available, x264 is the software-encoding alternative.
- Reduce competing work if the laptop still struggles. Simplify animated overlays and browser sources, close heavy applications you do not need, and lower output resolution or frame rate if necessary. These are practical tuning steps, not guaranteed fixes; change one thing at a time so you can see its effect.
- Test the real workload. Make a short recording or test stream using the game, scene, and sources you intend to use. Check for dropped frames and encoder warnings, and watch whether the problem appears during encoding, scene rendering, or network delivery before changing more settings.
Do not judge readiness from minimum specifications alone. A short test with your actual content is more informative than the fact that the software launches.
Common problems and what to try
| Symptom | Likely area to check | First adjustment |
|---|---|---|
| High CPU load while encoding | x264 or another CPU-heavy workload | Check whether your laptop offers Quick Sync, NVENC, or AMF and test a compatible hardware encoder. |
| Lag continues after switching encoders | Game load, scene complexity, graphics rendering, thermals, drivers, or network | Simplify sources and overlays, close unnecessary applications, and reduce output resolution or frame rate if needed. Check whether the app reports encoder warnings or dropped frames. |
| Hardware encoder is not listed | Unsupported or unrecognized graphics hardware, or a driver issue | Confirm the laptop’s graphics hardware and drivers, then check the app’s encoder menu again. If no compatible option appears, use the available software encoder and test a lighter workload. |
| The laptop meets minimum requirements but the stream performs poorly | The actual game, scene, or concurrent applications exceed what the laptop handles comfortably | Reduce workload and test again; a minimum requirement is not a workload guarantee. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep pre-recorded video live on a YouTube channel 24/7, rather than stream from a live game or camera, StreamNeo is a different option: upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home. It streams uploaded video at the quality supplied, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; there are no quality tiers. It automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card.
