OBS Studio is a strong first choice if you want free, flexible streaming software and are willing to learn its basic controls. Streamlabs Desktop is a reasonable alternative if you prefer guided setup and built-in overlays, alerts, and widgets. Neither is automatically best for every computer or workflow: your operating system, content, encoder, network, and desired features all matter.

This guide helps you choose, set up a simple scene, check your audio and video, and test before your first public stream.

Choose the software that fits your workflow

Your priority First option to consider Trade-off
Free, flexible software that works across major desktop operating systems OBS Studio You assemble the broadcast from scenes and sources, then learn and check the controls yourself. OBS is available for Windows, macOS, and Linux; check its current download page for release-specific OS support.
Guided onboarding and built-in widgets, alerts, or overlays Streamlabs Desktop Basic use is free, but features such as multistreaming and premium overlays may be paid or plan-dependent. Confirm current plan details before relying on them.

Compare the applications against your actual use: gameplay, screen presentations, camera-led content, or console capture; your computer’s capability; supported operating systems; and whether you want built-in production features or prefer to configure a simpler setup. Elgato’s software comparison also discusses XSplit Broadcaster and Meld Studio, but it is a manufacturer’s comparison, not an independent performance benchmark.

OBS Project cautions: “Having a compatible system does not guarantee that it is capable of streaming or recording using OBS Studio.” The encoder, resolution, frame rate, scene complexity, and network all affect performance. See the OBS system requirements before installing; compatibility alone is not a performance guarantee.

Check your computer and install the software

OBS Studio

Consult both the system requirements and the current download page. Their OS guidance can differ by release: the requirements page describes Windows 10 or 11, macOS 11 or later, and Linux/Unix configurations, while the download page may set newer minimums for particular builds. Use the current download listing for the build you install, rather than treating one OS floor as universal.

Streamlabs Desktop

Check Streamlabs’ current installer and requirements before downloading. Its May 20, 2026 quick-start guide lists Windows 11 or macOS 12, 8 GB RAM, integrated graphics, and 10 GB storage as minimum guidance; it recommends Windows 11 or macOS 13 or newer, at least 16 GB RAM, higher-tier CPU/GPU classes, and a 512 GB SSD. These are vendor recommendations, not assurances that a specific game and scene will perform well. Streamlabs’ separate requirements page, dated April 25, 2025, gives different OS guidance, so verify the current requirements at installation time.

Streamlabs’ April 25, 2025 requirements page gives 3.6 Mbps or better upload speed for 720p at 30 fps on most platforms. That is dated vendor guidance, not a universal target. Check the current requirements for your streaming destination and leave upload headroom for network variation.

Set up and test your first stream

  1. Run the initial setup wizard. In OBS, choose Tools → Auto-Configuration Wizard. It considers your intended use, hardware, and network conditions. In Streamlabs Desktop, follow its onboarding wizard, then connect your intended destination under Settings → Stream. The available connection options depend on the service you use.
  2. Create one simple scene. A scene is the layout; sources are the elements it contains. Start with only what you need: game capture, a window or display capture, and optionally a webcam. OBS’s quick-start guide and Streamlabs’ getting-started guide explain adding sources. Before capturing a display, close personal windows and silence notifications that could appear on stream.
  3. Check the audio meters. Speak into your microphone and play computer audio; watch the meters to confirm the intended devices are active. If a meter does not move or the wrong device is selected, choose the input or output device manually in audio settings. Streamlabs notes that, in its described macOS workflow, capturing desktop audio requires audio-routing software. A microphone upgrade is optional: first test your existing audio setup.
  4. Choose a sustainable output resolution and frame rate. Keep the base canvas at your display’s native resolution, then select an output resolution your computer and upload connection can sustain. Streamlabs recommends 1280×720 as a balance and suggests 30 fps for less demanding content; faster action may benefit from 60 fps if the system can manage it. Those are vendor recommendations, not guaranteed results. OBS recommends using its wizard and testing because performance depends on the encoder, resolution, frame rate, scene complexity, and network. Consult your platform’s current guidance for platform-specific settings.
  5. Make a short test recording or private/test broadcast. Where your platform supports it, test privately; otherwise record a few minutes locally. Check framing, game or screen capture, voice level, computer audio, dropped frames, and the resulting recording or replay. OBS’s quick-start guide encourages a short test before a first live broadcast; Streamlabs’ checklist also calls out widgets, camera placement, and audio meters.
  6. Go live after the test is right. Enter a title, description, and category where the platform prompts you. Add overlays and alerts only if they serve your format; they are optional, not prerequisites.

What you need beyond the software

A microphone, webcam, or capture card is not required for every stream. Built-in devices can be enough to start; a webcam matters if you want a face camera, and a capture card is relevant to particular console-to-computer workflows. Check compatibility with your computer, console, and software before buying equipment. The Streamlabs microphone setup tutorial and the OBS and Streamlabs source workflows cover device configuration; no particular hardware model is endorsed here.

Common first-stream problems and fixes

  • The stream stutters or drops frames: lower the output resolution or frame rate, simplify the scene, and rerun the configuration wizard. Check upload capacity and use the target platform’s current bitrate guidance; a compatible computer may still lack capacity for your chosen settings.
  • The microphone or desktop audio is missing: select the correct device in audio settings, speak or play sound, and confirm the relevant meter moves. On macOS with Streamlabs, check whether your desktop-audio workflow needs audio-routing software.
  • The game or display is not visible: confirm the right capture source is in the active scene and that the source targets the intended game, window, or display. Keep the scene simple while diagnosing.
  • Private information appears on screen: stop the test, close or hide the exposed window, silence notifications, and capture only the intended display or application.
  • A feature is unavailable in Streamlabs: check the current plan details. Multistreaming and premium overlays are examples of features that may require a paid plan.
