Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →For an OBS stream, turn on Settings → Advanced → Network → Dynamically change bitrate to manage congestion (Beta). It lets OBS lower the sending bitrate when your connection is congested, which can reduce dropped frames—but it may also reduce picture quality. YouTube’s automatic detection is different: YouTube detects encoder settings such as resolution and frame rate, while you configure the encoder’s outgoing bitrate.
What “automatic bitrate” means in YouTube Live
There are two separate behaviors that are easy to confuse. YouTube Live Control Room can detect encoder settings, including resolution and frame rate by default. That does not mean YouTube automatically changes the bitrate your encoder sends. The outgoing bitrate is set in the encoder, such as OBS. YouTube explains its encoder recommendations in Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
OBS’s dynamic bitrate option is a congestion response: if the connection cannot keep up, OBS lowers the sending bitrate rather than dropping frames. The image can become less detailed. It is not a repair for an unreliable internet connection, and it does not automatically change your output resolution. OBS documents the option in Stream Connection Troubleshooting.
Choose a starting bitrate for your stream
Set a bitrate appropriate for the resolution, frame rate and codec you intend to stream. YouTube’s current recommendation table gives these examples for 1080p at 60 frames per second; they are recommendations, not a guarantee that a connection will sustain the stream.
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
| Profile | YouTube minimum | YouTube recommended |

| AV1 or H.265, 1080p60 | 4 Mbps | 12 Mbps |
Use the row for your codec, and consult YouTube’s encoder settings page for other profiles. YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds. Before choosing a rate, test your upload speed and leave bandwidth headroom: YouTube advises reserving 20% of available upload bandwidth rather than using the entire connection for the stream. See YouTube’s streaming tips.
Set up the YouTube stream and OBS
- Open YouTube Live Control Room. In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live. Create or choose a stream, then copy its stream URL and stream key. YouTube’s encoder setup guide describes this workflow. Treat the key like a password: do not show it on screen, include it in screenshots or share it publicly.
- Configure OBS to send to YouTube. Connect the YouTube service in OBS or enter the stream URL and key in its stream settings. Set your output resolution, frame rate, codec and starting bitrate using the profile you chose. Configure CBR and a two-second keyframe interval, staying within YouTube’s four-second maximum.
- Enable OBS dynamic bitrate. In OBS, open Settings → Advanced → Network, check Dynamically change bitrate to manage congestion (Beta), then select Apply and OK if those buttons appear. Labels or menu placement may vary between OBS releases; the current OBS troubleshooting guide is the reference for the setting.
- Test before the actual broadcast. Start streaming from OBS and wait for the preview in Live Control Room. Check that the picture, movement and audio are correct before selecting Go live. Test with representative audio and motion, and keep an eye on stream health during the event. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring rather than relying on a bitrate setting alone.
Understand the trade-off and protocol limitation
When OBS reduces bitrate during congestion, viewers may see lower image quality. OBS’s interface text also warns that sudden congestion can increase viewer delay, and that restoring the bitrate may take up to a few minutes. Those effects can be more noticeable during fast movement or detailed scenes. Dynamic bitrate helps prioritize continuity over preserving the original bitrate; it does not guarantee a stable stream or eliminate the cause of congestion.

OBS’s setting text says dynamic bitrate is currently supported only for RTMP. YouTube recommends RTMPS in its encoder workflow. Because protocol support can depend on the OBS version and service configuration, confirm compatibility in your current OBS and YouTube setup before relying on this feature. YouTube’s protocol and encoder guidance is on its encoder settings page; OBS’s related interface wording is available in its English interface strings.
Troubleshoot bitrate and stream problems
- OBS still drops frames: Dynamic bitrate does not fix the underlying connection. Check upload capacity, avoid saturating the connection with other traffic, and leave the 20% bandwidth headroom YouTube recommends. If the connection remains unstable, reduce the configured bitrate or choose a less demanding profile, then test again.
- Picture quality gets worse during the stream: That is the expected trade-off when OBS lowers bitrate to manage congestion. Check whether the selected profile is sustainable on your connection; dynamic bitrate is not a promise to preserve image quality.
- There is more viewer delay after congestion: OBS notes that sudden congestion can increase delay and that returning to the previous bitrate may take a few minutes. Allow time for the connection to recover and monitor stream health.
- The option is missing or does not appear to work: Check the current OBS help page for the setting path and confirm the stream protocol. The setting text documents RTMP support; YouTube recommends RTMPS, so verify compatibility for your current configuration.
- YouTube does not show the expected stream preview: Confirm that OBS is using the correct stream URL and key, and that the encoder is running. Re-copy the key from Live Control Room if needed, keeping it private, then wait for the preview before going live.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a continuous YouTube stream made from uploaded videos rather than a live camera or OBS production, StreamNeo runs the stream from the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home. Videos stream as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for uploaded-video looping to YouTube, not camera streaming or other platforms. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
