For tech reviews and tutorials, choose OBS Studio if you want free, configurable capture and are comfortable setting up scenes; choose Camtasia if you want screen recording and tutorial-focused editing in one workflow. The better fit depends on whether your priority is controlling the recording or refining it afterward.
Choose by the work you need to do
A polished review often combines a clean screen capture, narration, optional webcam picture-in-picture, and close-ups that make small interface details easy to see. A tutorial may also need callouts, captions, and a way to repair a narration mistake. A quick internal demonstration or an async share has different needs from a locally edited video.
- Choose OBS Studio when you want free, open-source recording with configurable scenes and sources, and want to shape a repeatable capture setup.
- Choose Camtasia when you want to record screen, camera, system audio, and microphone on separate tracks, then edit the result with cursor effects, annotations, and other tutorial-oriented tools.
- Investigate Loom if your main need is a quick screen recording and share-link workflow. Its official page calls it a free screen recorder, but current plan limits are not established here.

OBS Studio: configurable capture and streaming
OBS Studio is free and open-source software for video recording and live streaming. Where it fits a review or tutorial
Build a scene for the main screen or application, then add a webcam or other source if the video calls for it. Separate scenes can support recurring formats—for example, a full-screen product demonstration and a presenter-led introduction—while hotkeys and transitions can help you switch during a recording.
OBS documents audio mixing and filters, but the cited feature information does not establish a particular configuration for recording microphone and system audio as independently editable tracks. If you expect to adjust those sources separately in post-production, verify the recording workflow you intend to use before committing to it.

What to weigh before choosing it
OBS offers many controls, which is useful when you want to tailor the setup, but its feature list does not prove that every creator will find setup easy. Allow time to configure and check your scenes, audio, and recording workflow. OBS lists Windows 10/11 and macOS 13 or newer on its current home page, and supports Windows, Mac, and Linux; check the official site for current system details before installing.
Camtasia: recording with tutorial-focused editing
Camtasia combines screen capture with an editor aimed at producing tutorials and other screen-led videos. TechSmith documents capture of screen, camera, system audio, and microphone on separate tracks, making it possible to adjust those elements during editing. Its listed editing tools include cursor effects, annotations, captions, templates, and text-based editing through Audiate. Why separate tracks matter
If your narration needs a level adjustment or a spoken mistake needs attention, having the microphone and system audio on separate tracks gives you more control than a single mixed recording. It does not guarantee that every mistake can be repaired invisibly, but it supports a more flexible edit.
Know the free-download export restriction
TechSmith says the free download exposes the editor, but exported videos carry a watermark until you upgrade to a qualifying paid plan or business license. Treat this as an export restriction, not as an unrestricted free publishing workflow. Plan the recording before you press Record
- Decide what the viewer must see. For a software review, identify the screens, menus, or product actions that support each point. Capture only what helps explain the review or tutorial.
- Choose your sources. Decide whether the video needs a full display, a specific window, a browser, a webcam, or an external capture card. OBS documents these kinds of sources in its scene workflow; select the corresponding capture workflow in the software you choose.
- Set up narration and system sound. Confirm which audio sources you need and listen to a short sample. If separate editing of microphone and system audio matters, Camtasia documents separate tracks; OBS documents audio mixing and filters, but not a specific independent-track configuration in the cited feature page.
- Record a short check. Review the picture, narration, system sound, and any webcam placement before recording the full review. This catches a wrong window, missing source, or unusable audio early.
- Make the edit serve the explanation. Trim dead time, clarify steps, and add callouts or captions where they help. Camtasia documents cursor effects and annotations for this kind of screen-first polish.
- Check the exported file. Watch the export from beginning to end, including the opening and ending, and confirm that any export watermark is acceptable for your purpose and license.
Audio and presentation choices
A USB microphone is an optional accessory for narrated reviews and tutorials, not a software requirement. Both OBS and Camtasia document microphone capture, but the available information does not establish a best microphone model or show that an external microphone is necessary for every creator. Prioritize a recording setup that captures clear, consistent speech and test it before a longer take.
Keep webcam picture-in-picture only when it contributes to the explanation or presentation. If the software interface is the subject, give it enough screen space to remain readable; use a close-up or callout for small controls instead of shrinking the main capture.

Other workflows: sharing quickly or streaming continuously
For async communication, a fast share-link workflow may matter more than a full local edit. Loom’s official page describes it as a free screen recorder, but its current plan limits are not established here. ScreenFlow is another option to investigate for editing and screen recording; confirm current features and pricing directly with Telestream before choosing it.
